Overview

The IBM Directory Server is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory that runs as a stand-alone daemon. It is based on a client/server model that provides client access to an LDAP server. The IBM Directory Server provides an easy way to maintain directory information in a central location for storage, updating, retrieval, and exchange.

New function for this release

The following enhancements have been made for this release:

• New configuration tools
• Replication enhancements
• Configurable password policy rules
• Access control information changes
• Updated version of DB2

Tivoli Ready Enablement

The IBM Directory Server Version 5.1 carries the Tivoli Ready logo. An IBM Software product that carries the Tivoli Ready logo can be managed through the Tivoli Management Enterprise (TME) products. The management support provided by the IBM Directory Server Version 5.1 allows for automatic discovery, monitoring, start and stop processes/services from Tivoli Global Enterprise Manager console and inventory by Tivoli Inventory software.

The Tivoli Ready enablement files provided by the IBM Directory Server Version 5.1 are located in the following directory after installation of the server component:

install_path/tivready

where install_path is the path where the IBM Directory Server Version 5.1 is installed. See the Tivoli_Ready_README.txt file in this directory for detailed information on installation and configuration of the Tivoli Ready enablement.

The IBM Directory Server Version 5.1 contains the following graphical user interfaces:

Web Administration Tool

This Web-based interface allows the administrator to perform server tasks using a frame-enabled java-capable Web browser. The Web Administration Tool must be installed on an application server that is not required to be an IBM Directory Server client or server. Use the Web Administration Tool to:

• Change the administrator distinguished name (DN) and password
• Administer the server, including the following:
  • Start and stop the directory server
  • View server status
  • View connections
  • Manage server properties
  • Manage security properties
  • Manage log settings for the following:
    • Error log
    • Audit log
    • DB2 log
    • Bulkload log
    • Admin daemon log
• Manage schemas, including object classes, attributes, matching rules, and syntaxes
• Manage directory entries
• Manage replication
• Manage realms and templates
• Manage users and groups

Configuration Tool

The Configuration Tool provides a graphical user interface that enables you to manage the directory database. Use the tool to:

• Set or change the directory administrator DN and password
• Configure the directory DB2 database
• Unconfigure the directory DB2 database
• Manage the changelog database
• Manage suffixes
• Manage schema files
• Import LDIF data
• Export LDIF data
• Back up the database
• Restore the database
• Optimize the database
