Introduction to Multi-Channel Server

Multi-Channel Server (MCS) is the runtime component that transforms XDIME input by processing it according to predefined policies to generate device-specific markup. This device-specific markup is then provided for presentation to the mobile device.

Multi-Channel Server policies

Predefined policies in the MCS policy repository include :
  • Definitions for visual presentation elements such as:
    • Graphic layouts for different devices
    • Stylistic themes that define the use of fonts, colors, backgrounds, and borders for different devices
    • Components that bind different types of resources (for example, images) to devices
    • A mechanism for defining groups of components
  • Device attribute information (see the next section for information about updating device policies)

MCS supports the generation of multiple markup languages. See the related links for information about the mobile devices and languages MCS supports.

For additional information, refer to the Multi-Channel Server documentation. The documentation contains information on administering MCS, creating XDIME markup, and using MCS APIs. The Mobile Portal Toolkit online help also contains information about creating and working with MCS layout, theme, component, and asset policies, and about viewing device policies.

Updating device policies

A device policy is a collection of attributes associated with a class of devices or a specific device. Like other MCS policies, device policies reside in the MCS policy repository. Device policy attributes are available to business logic as well as to the MCS runtime. You can add or modify device policies using the Mobile Portal Toolkit.

The MCS policy repository contains information for a growing number of devices and device attributes. It is installed as a compressed XML file in IBM® Rational Application Developer and in a DB2® or Oracle database for the MCS runtime component when it is used with a portal server. You can obtain updates for new devices using the IBM Mobile Portal Accelerator Device Update optional feature. This feature is a subscription service providing updated device profile information. With the constant addition of new mobile devices in the market, the service lets you download updated and new device profiles.
