Exercise 3.1: Routing outbound mail

In this exercise you will learn how to configure your organization's SmartCloud iNotes® e-mail to route through an external SMTP server.

Overview

As a SmartCloud iNotes administrator, you may have a need to route outbound e-mail through an external SMTP server for the following reasons:
  • Integration with compliance archiving solutions
  • Screening messages through a data loss protection system
  • Complex enterprise mail routing requirements

You can configure your SmartCloud iNotes environment to route outbound e-mail through an external SMTP server. This server enables SmartCloud iNotes to route outbound email that originates with users from within the SmartCloud iNotes environment. Routing can be configured at the domain or user level.

To implement this option, you must provide the following information:
  • The hostname or IP address of the outbound SMTP server
  • Verification that the external SMTP server is properly configured

For example, make sure that e-mail messages sent from the iNotes outbound mail transfer agent (MTA) are accepted by the specified external SMTP server for mail relay.
