How can I tell if I have the AFM files for the PostScript fonts on my printer?
The PostScript printer doesn't need the AFM files. The AFM files are used by text formatters to get the metrics of the fonts. The printer has the font metrics in the fonts. To see what PostScript fonts are available in the printer, check the documentation provided it. Many printers produce a status sheet which shows the fonts at power on. Check the files in the FONTPS font library included with DCF 3.2 for the family names. This is located in the FamilyName (not FullName) parameter in the font metric (AFM) file. These font files are the AFM files referred to in the PostScript and DCF 3.2 books. The FamilyName must match the name of the font on the printer. If it does not, you must find the AFM file and upload it to the host (specifying ASCII to EBCDIC translation) or create one on the host. For many fonts it is possible to copy a supplied AFM file and edit it for the new family name to create the AFM file you need. When cloning a new AFM from an existing one, ensure the font metrics match those in the printer. Note: Some AFM files are shipped from Adobe Systems, Inc. on the diskette with the screen fonts.
