'NEGATIVE A- or C- SPACE' font messages

Question

Sometimes I get the message 'NEGATIVE A- or C- SPACE IN FONT MAY CAUSE ERRORS'. I don't understand the writeup in the message manual.

Answer

This is usually issued when using an italic font.

An italic lowercase f has negative C space.

The character will extend past the line length.

Years ago, PSF/MVS couldn't handle the "off the logical page" condition--it
would stop printing your job if anything fell outside the logical page.

A check was added to SCRIPT just to warn you that you might have a
situation where your text could fall off the logical page.

This check was removed in DCF Rel 3.2 via apar PL61206 in 6/90. It was no
longer needed as PSF/MVS no longer stops printing for off the logical page
  errors.
