Configuration: VOB Hardware

• Disks

  • Use multiple disks, controllers, I/O buses as appropriate
  • Some words on RAID:
    • RAID 5 (parity disk in 2-dimensional array) degrades poorly for ClearCase loads
    • RAID 0+1 (mirroring and striping) is popular among customers:
      • performance (striped across ɭ disk--use small stripe)
      • recoverability (spare copy on-line)
      • backup (break mirror for backup, rebuild when done)

• Memory

  • Want working set of VOB database in main memory (disk buffer cache)
  • Roughly, (DB size)/2 of main memory
