Character limitations

Certain character limitations apply when you create a title or short title for objects to be displayed by the XDIME aggregator.

Restriction: When using Portal Administration portlets to create a title or short title for a page, navigation title field, URL, or portlet, the double quote character (") and entity declarations for the double quote character (" and ") should not be used in the title. This restriction applies regardless of the markup type (for example, XDIME or HTML) supported by the page, label, URL, or portlet.
Restriction: Avoid using the less than (<) and greater than (>) symbols in titles and short titles for extended attributes and preload notices. These symbols are not interpreted literally. For example, the markup <html></html> would display as &lt;html&gt;&lt;/html&gt;.

When configuring characters for mwp.tree.indent.value, mwp.tree.bullet.value, or mwp.pda.indent.value in mwp.properties, you can either specify a character, a predefined character entity reference (for example, &amp;) supported by the W3C Extensible Markup Language (XML) Recommendation, or a numeric character reference (for example, &#38;).

Attention: Be careful when specifying special characters whose numeric character representation depends on the character set being used by a device's browser. For example, the bullet character numeric reference is either a &#149; or &#8226; depending on the character set. Therefore, you should not specify a numeric character reference in a title, short title, or as the value for the mwp.tree.indent.value, mwp.tree.bullet.value, or mwp.pda.indent.value in mwp.properties unless the numeric value is the same across all character sets that you plan to support and you have verified that all mobile device browsers are capable of displaying the special character.
