By defining thresholds or zones for a performance variable, you can have
warnings and alarms issued when its value crosses a threshold or enters a
zone. Use the Thresholds page to define or change the actions that
occur when the values being collected by a performance monitor cross defined
thresholds.

To define or change the actions associated with a performance
variable when its value crosses defined thresholds:
- Open the Show Monitor notebook.
- Select a performance monitor from the list below the Monitor
name field.
- Open the What page.
- Open the Thresholds page.
- From the What page select a performance
variable. That variable is displayed on the left side of the Thresholds
page, in the field above the Perform action radio buttons.
- Enter threshold boundaries in the Thresholds input
fields.
- Select a zone from the list in the Threshold
action box. Then, on the left side of the Thresholds page, define
the warning and alarm zone borders for the selected performance
variable.
-
The first field is the Upper Alarm, which is the highest value the
monitor will return for a performance variable before issuing any upper alarm
actions set for that performance variable.
-
The second field is the Upper Warning, which triggers a warning when a
performance variable is approaching its upper alarm value.
-
The third field is the Lower Warning, which triggers a warning when a
performance variable is approaching its lower alarm value.
-
The fourth field is the Lower Alarm, which is the lowest value the
monitor will return for a performance variable before issuing any lower alarm
actions set for that performance variable.
As you define thresholds, a sample graph is displayed for the selected
performance variable.
- The colored zones are created based on your definitions. Red
indicates alarm zones, while yellow shows warning zones. These zones
appear on the monitor's Details graph.
- On the right side of the Thresholds page, select the actions
to be taken if the performance variable's value crosses a
threshold.
- Select a threshold or zone from the Threshold
action list.
- Choose one or more check boxes to identify the actions to be taken if a
value enters the selected zone:
-
Add an entry to the Alert Center.
-
Issue a warning beep.
-
Have a program or script start. The program is identified in the
field to the right of the Start script action. Select a script from the
Select script window.
-
Have a message sent to the user. Enter an appropriate message in
the input window below the User message action.
- On the lower left section of the Thresholds page, indicate
when the defined actions are to take place.
Select the appropriate radio button to perform the action:
-
Whenever a threshold or zone border is crossed.
-
When a threshold or zone border has been crossed a defined number of
times. Use the up and down arrows to spin through the available
choices.
- Activate or deactivate a threshold by clicking on its
colored zone on the graph. An active threshold will appear as bright
red or bright yellow. A deactivated threshold appears as dim red or dim
yellow.
- Click on Apply to have your actions applied to the next
sample.
Note: | If you are not the creator of the performance monitor, then any changes made
to the thresholds and actions are only valid for the current session.
They are not saved. Optionally, you can save the changes to another
monitor if you have the appropriate authorities for that monitor.
