Registering a server node and remote information catalog

An information catalog can be either local (stored on your workstation) or remote. If an information catalog is remote, you or your remote database administrator must complete the following tasks:

  1. Prepare to register the server node and information catalog.
  2. Register the server node.
  3. Register the remote information catalog.

Steps 1 and 2 can be completed outside of the Information Catalog Manger windows. Information catalog administrators or remote database administrators can use the DB2 Control Center windows to:

After these steps are completed in the DB2 Control Center, you should shut down the DB2 Control Center before opening the Information Catalog Manager. See the DB2 Control Center online help for details.

After the tasks are completed within the DB2 Control Center, you can use the Information Catalog Manager Register New Information Catalog window to complete the registration process. Make sure that your Information Catalog Manager administrator provides you with the following information:

Registering the server node

If you previously connected to a database that resides on the server on which the remote information catalog resides, you can skip this step and continue to step Registering the remote information catalog.

  1. Click IBM DB2 --> Start --> Programs --> Information Catalog Manager.
  2. Double-click the Register Server Node and Information Catalog icon.

    The Register Server Node and Information Catalog window opens.

  3. Click Register new server node.
  4. Click OK.

    The Register New Server Node window opens.

  5. Select a command file that is appropriate for your environment. Your Information Catalog Manager administrator can provide you with the appropriate file. The Contents of the command file field displays the protocol and database commands that will establish the connection between the Information Catalog Manager and the remote database where your information catalog is stored.
  6. Click Register.
  7. The Register Server Node and Information Catalog window remains open. You can register other server nodes for information catalogs, or click Cancel to close the window.

Registering the remote information catalog

To register the remote information catalog:

  1. Click Start --> Programs --> IBM DB2 --> Information Catalog Manager.
  2. Double-click the Register Server Node and Information Catalog icon.

    The Register Server Node and Information Catalog window opens.

  3. Click Register new information catalog.
  4. Click OK.

    The Register New Information Catalog window opens.

  5. In the Information catalog name field, type the name that the remote catalog will have on your local workstation.
  6. In the Server information catalog name field, type the name that the information catalog has on the remote server.
  7. From the Server node ID list, select the server node or DB2 Connect gateway workstation where the remote information catalog is located.
  8. Click Register.

    The Connect to Information Catalog window opens.

  9. In the User ID field, type the user ID required by the database that stores your information catalog:

    DB2 UDB for OS/2 (remote)
    LAN user ID (specified with UPM on the remote workstation)

    DB2 UDB for OS/390
    RACF user ID

    DB2 UDB for AS/400
    AS/400(R) user ID

    DB2 UDB for AIX
    AIX user ID

    DB2 Universal Database Enterprise-Extended Edition
    AIX(R), Sun, or Windows NT(R) user ID (depending on the platform)

    DB2 UDB for Windows NT
    Windows NT user ID

    DB2 UDB for Windows 95
    Windows 95 user ID

    DB2 UDB for Windows 98
    Windows 98 user ID

    DB2 UDB for Windows 2000
    Windows 2000 user ID

    DB2 UDB for Sun Solaris
    Sun Solaris user ID
  10. In the Password field, type the password for the user ID that you entered in the User ID field.

    Passwords are case sensitive for accessing databases on the following platforms:

  11. Click Connect.

    Your new catalog is defined and an Information Catalog Manager program icon is created on the Start menu.

  12. The Register Server Node and Information Catalog window remains open. You can register other server nodes for information catalogs, or click Cancel to close the window.
