What the heck are these generic logical devices?

Question

What are those "generic" devices for?

Answer

The PG1 devices are identical to the 3820 devices. You can use PG1
whenever you are printing on a 3820, 3827, 3835, or a 3812 with the GML
  Starter Set Diskette.

The PG2 devices are for printing on a 3812 with the Standard Font diskette.
You can also use PG2 to print on the 3820, 3827, or 3835. But you cannot
use PG2 to print on the 3812 with the GML Starter Set Diskette.

The PG3 devices are really only intended for a 4224, but you can print on
any AFP device except the 3812 (if you like monospace fonts). Be careful
using page segments created for the 3820 family on the 4224.

In Release 4.0, the (you guessed it) PG4 devices are intended for printing
on a 4028 printer. PG4 will produce AFPDS in L-units of 1440/inch instead
of 240 and will use either relative or fixed metric fonts. The default font
  is Times Roman.
