    Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, Alt + a letter combination, or the mouse to make a selection.

    References to optional hardware in this document do not imply support of that hardware. For information about supported options, see the ServerProven information for your server at http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/.


    1.0 What you will need

    3.0 Preparing the hardware

    To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, refer to the Installation Guide located at the IBM Support Web site at http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.


    4.0 Detailed installation instructions

    To install VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 Plus, complete the steps in the following sections.


    4.1 Installing VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 Plus

    To install VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 Plus, complete the following steps:

    1. Before starting the installation, complete the following steps:
      1. Turn on the server.
      2. When the prompt Press F1 for Configuration/Setup is displayed, press F1.
      3. Select Advanced Setup; then, select RSA II Settings.
      4. At the next menu, use the down arrow to scroll to OS USB Selection; then select Linux OS.
      5. Scroll down and select Save Values and Reboot RSA II. At the next prompt, press Enter and reboot the RSA II.
      6. Press Enter to continue once the RSA II Settings Saved! message appears.
      7. Press Esc to exit out of the next screen.
      8. Press Esc twice to return to the main menu and select Save Settings.
    2. Insert the VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 Plus operating system CD into the CD/DVD drive and boot the system.
    3. Follow the detailed instructions from the Installation and Upgrade Guide located at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_30_20_installation_guide.pdf to install VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 Plus.
    4. Visit http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/ for further information on installation and support of guest operating systems, and configuration and administration of VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 Plus.
      Note:
      If a CD/RW drive is installed in your system, follow these steps before installing virtual machines:
      1. Log on to the ESX server as root and make a copy of /boot/grub/grub.conf.
      2. Edit grub.conf and look for "hda=ide-scsi" at the end of the kernel load image.
      3. Remove "hda=ide-scsi."
      4. Reboot the server.

    4.2 Installing the ASM driver

    To install the ASM driver, complete the following steps:

    1. Insert the VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 Plus operating system CD into the server and mount the drive.
      mount /mnt/cdrom
      
    2. Go to the VMware/RPMS directory on the CD and install libusb-0.1.6-3.i386.rpm and libusb-devel-0.1.6-3.i386.rpm.
      rpm -ivh libusb-0.1.6-3.i386.rpm
      
      rpm -ivh libusb-devel-0.1.6-3.i386.rpm
      
    3. Download the latest version of the ASM driver from the IBM Web site at http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/supportsite.wss/brandmain?brandind=5000016.
    4. If this is an upgrade to an existing Remote Supervisor Adapter II daemon, the previously installed Remote Supervisor Adapter II daemon must be removed. Do not try to upgrade the rpm with the upgrade (-U) switch. To install the RPM execute the following commands:
      rpmbuild --rebuild ibmusbasm-1.XX.src.rpm
      
    5. In order to make the RPM file which builds and installs the Remote Supervisor Adapter II daemon and/or support software for the IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II, run the following steps.
      cd /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386
      
      rpm -ivh ibmusbasm-1.XX.i386.rpm
