It also contains instructions relating to using the download utilities for updating adapter, enclosure and drive microcode under Windows NT (instructions for Windows 2000 are in a separate file w2krme.txt). Please also refer to the Section 5.0 Having Problems? before calling a service representative. 2.0 BEFORE INSTALLING YOUR ADAPTER ---------------------------------- 2.1 Getting PC Server BIOS Updates ---------------------------------- NOTE: It is recommended that you ensure that the Server you are using has the latest BIOS. This can be obtained from the following sites: www.pc.ibm.com/us/netfinity : IBM PC Company Web site. www.compaq.com : Compaq company Web site. www.hp.com : Hewlett Packard company Web site. www.dell.com : DELL Company Web site. 2.2 Software Requirements ------------------------- NOTE: It is recommended that you ensure that the version of Windows being used has the latest level service pack applied. At the time of writing this was Service Pack 6 for NT4.0. This may be obtained from Microsoft's ftp site at: ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/ 2.3 Hardware Requirements ------------------------- For a list of IBM and OEM Intel PC Servers which have been tested by IBM please refer to our Customer Support Website: http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa * For SerialRAID adapters a supported PC Server platform which has a PCI bus (level 2.1). * 1 MB of fixed disk space above that required by NT. * 0.5 MB of memory above that required by NT. * 2-button mouse or other pointing device. * IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter, IBM SerialRAID Adapter, IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter or IBM SSA RAID Adapter, installed in a PCI slot of the system unit. 2.4 Getting Help ---------------- In all cases consult the documentation provided with your adapter, and enclosures. - Installation Guide - User's Guide and Maintenance Information Manual - Technical Reference Manual 2.4.1 Service and Technical Support ----------------------------------- We are happy to help you with your IBM SSA RAID Adapter questions. You can contact us through one of the following: For Technical Support: - Please contact your supplier in the first instance - SSA Online Customer Support Homepage (All adapter/drive microcode and all customer host software including device drivers - look here first) http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa For Product Information: http://www.storage.ibm.com/storage/ 2.4.2 Defect Reporting ---------------------- Please report any defects to the supplier of your adapter. 3.0 INSTALLING ADAPTERS ----------------------- Please note : 1) The Host Software programs are automatically copied to the directory "\issa", located on the NT's system partition. 2) If you install the SSA Device Drivers AT THE SAME time that you install Microsoft's Windows NT, then you will need to reinstall them once the operating system installation has been completed. During Windows NT setup, only the device driver is installed. The device driver event logging message dll must also be copied. This is done by re-installing the device drivers. Do not power off during this process if your Windows NT boot disk is on an SSA resource. 3) Because of a restriction in the Windows NT installation code a special procedure must be used to install NT on SSA disk drives attached to an IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter. This procedure is in the subdirectory \NTBoot. See the README.TXT file in that directory. 4) We recommend RAID-1 arrays be created with the Initial rebuild option set to 1, when using RAID-1 in conjunction with Windows NT. 5) Clicking the right mouse button on IBMSSA.SYS in Windows NT 'Explorer' either on the original install diskette or in the winnt\system32\drivers directory brings up the "Properties box". Clicking on the version tab will give information useful in the diagnosis of any problems if they need to be reported to an IBM representative. The Internal Name being the most important as it shows the date and level of the device driver. This information is also available in RSM. 6) The host software can be installed from either the CD-ROM provided with your adapter, or from the Customer Support Web site: http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa For more information relating to these software components refer to the Installation Guide, User's Guide and Maintenance Information Manual and the SSA Tools Menu HTML help files. 3.0.1 USERS WITH MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF SSA ADAPTER IN A SERVER -------------------------------------------------------------- When you have more than one adapter in any one server you need only install one instance of the device driver. All four IBM SSA RAID / SerialRAID adapters use the same device driver. If when you have more than one type of IBM SSA RAID / SerialRAID adapter in one server you should proceed as follows : Do you have an IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter in the server? If * NO * follow the instructions in section 3.1 below If * YES * follow the instructions in section 3.2 below 3.1 Installing the IBM SSA RAID Adapter, IBM SerialRAID Adapter --------------------------------------------------------------- or the IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter. ----------------------------------------- You should ensure that the device driver you are running is the latest level, which may be downloaded from http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa 1) If not upgrading an existing driver go to 2) otherwise: To manually check the version of the device driver you are currently running open Windows NT Explorer at: :\winnt\system32\drivers Right click on the file ibmssa.sys and select properties, and view the Version tab. Select the "Internal Name" field, and note the date. Repeat this process with the latest version on the supplied Windows NT Device Driver diskette, or such a diskette created from the Web site. If the version in the \winnt\system32\drivers directory is older, you should continue with step 2. Otherwise you need do nothing. IBMDSK.SYS ---------- Please note you no longer require the ibmdsk.sys device driver. This was installed by the SSA device driver diskettes version 1.01 to 1.06. The driver, and its references will be removed from your system when you install the new driver for your adapter. You may need to remove the entry from the SCSI Adapters, "Drivers" tab after you restart your system. The file itself can also be removed from the above drivers directory. To upgrade the driver follow the steps in 2) 2) Open the Control Panel and select SCSI Adapters. Select the drivers tab and click Add. Click "Have Disk", when prompted with the a:\ path, insert the Windows NT Device Driver diskette. Select the appropriate adapter - if you have more than one SSA adapter type in this host select any one of them. Answer "New" if asked which driver you wish to use. When completed answer YES to reboot. NOTE: If you have more than one adapter in the same server, all SSA adapters will appear to Windows NT as the type you selected during install. This does not matter as they all use the same device driver. 3) You should now install the Host Software supplied on the CD-ROM or obtain updated versions of the SSA Event Logger and RSM from the SSA Customer Support Homepage. http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa 3.1.1 Supported SSA Array Migration. ------------------------------------ IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter --------------------------------- This adapter supports the migration of RAID-0 and RAID-5 arrays created with the IBM SSA RAID Adapter (Note: The SSA RAID Adapter supported RAID arrays split across the A and B loops of the adapter. You MUST migrate arrays so that all the members of an array are on one loop before migrating to the Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter). This adapter also supports the migration of RAID-5 arrays created with the IBM SerialRAID Adapter. All other RAID arrays (RAID-1) must be deleted (or reconfigured as RAID-0 or RAID-5) prior to the members of these arrays being used as SSA resources. Partition information on the array should first be removed by using Disk Administrator and then the array can be detached and deleted by the configurator. If the array utilised the Fast Write Cache feature you must first "delete FW" with RSM on the array view page before you can detach the array. Once an array has been migrated, you cannot re-attach it to the old adapter. IBM SerialRAID Adapter ---------------------- This adapter supports the migration of RAID-5 arrays created with the IBM SSA RAID Adapter only (Note: If the array is split between the A and B loops of the adapter, it must be migrated so that the array members are all on the same loop before migrating the array to the SerialRAID Adapter). All other RAID arrays must be deleted (or reconfigured as RAID-5) prior to the members of these arrays being used as single SSA devices. Partition information on the array should first be removed by using Disk Administrator and then the array can be detached and deleted by the configurator. Users who may have created RAID-1 or RAID-0 arrays on previous IBM SSA adapters are advised that any data required on these disks MUST be migrated to either single SSA devices or RAID-5 arrays and the original arrays deleted BEFORE attaching to the IBM SerialRAID Adapter. 3.1.2 2-way Fast Write cache on IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter ----------------------------------------------------------------- Firmware level 7100, or later, for the IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter supports the use of the fast write cache (FWC) in two-way configurations, for example using Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS). If you are using MSCS, upgrading to firmware 7100 or later, and you wish to upgrade your arrays or disks to use FWC, then you should follow this procedure: 1) Go into Services and stop Microsoft Cluster Service on both hosts. 2) Upgrade the IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter firmware on both hosts to 7100 or later. 3) Using Remote System Manager (RSM), select the logical view. 4) For each array and JBOD (System Disk) attached to NT write down the resource number. 5) For each array and JBOD in turn, detach it and then create a Fast Write Resource out of it. 6) Re-attach the array or JBOD ensuring that the original resource number is retained. DO NOT DELETE THE MBR OTHERWISE DATA WILL BE LOST ! 6) Start Microsoft Cluster Service on both hosts. 7) Bring up Microsoft Cluster Admin. 8) If any disk group fails - reboot both servers and start Microsoft Cluster Admin. again. 9) Use Cluster Admin. to bring online any offline disk resources. Wait until the cluster is stable. 10) Verify the system is now operational. 3.2 Installing the IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter ----------------------------------------------- You should ensure that the device driver you are running is the latest level, which may be downloaded from http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa 1) If not upgrading an existing driver go to 2) otherwise: To manually check the version of the device driver you are currently running open Windows NT Explorer at : :\winnt\system32\drivers Right click on the file ibmssa.sys and select properties, and view the Version tab. NON-CLUSTER MODE (1-way) ================ Even if you have other SSA adapters in the server, select the following adapter when prompted by Windows : "IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter - Adapter A" CLUSTER MODE USERS PLEASE NOTE (2-way) ============================== When two IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapters are connected via SSA loops in what is called "2-way cluster mode" you MUST install each adapter in a separate host server. Each adapter must be given a node number, either A or B. When prompted by Windows install one adapter in the cluster as: "IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter - Adapter A" and the corresponding cluster partner adapter in the other server as: "IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter - Adapter B" even if you have other SSA adapter types in the server. NOTE : IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS THE CLUSTER WILL NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. Note : If you have more than one "IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter" in a host it cannot be connected by means of SSA cables to another "IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter" in the same host. Select the appropriate adapter as described above. Answer "New" if asked which driver you wish to use. When the driver installation has completed answer YES to reboot. NOTE: If you have more than one adapter in the same server, all SSA adapters will appear to Windows NT as the type you selected during install. This does not matter as they all use the same device driver. You must install a new NT Service using issaclus.exe, which is distributed from the SSA Customer Support Homepage with the NT Driver package for the SSA RAID Cluster Adapter (LL10). To do this copy ISSACLUS.EXE to :\issa. In :\issa execute the following: issaclus -install net start issaclus This will install and then start issaclus as an NT Service. It will be automatically restarted whenever NT is restarted. 3) You should now install the Host Software supplied on the CD-ROM or obtain updated versions of the SSA Event Logger and RSM from the SSA Customer Support Homepage. http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa 3.2.1 Supported SSA Array Migration ----------------------------------- IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter ---------------------------- This adapter supports the migration of RAID-1 arrays created with the IBM SSA RAID Adapter only. All other RAID arrays must be deleted (or reconfigured as RAID-1) prior to the members of these arrays being used as single SSA devices. Partition information on the array should first be removed by using Disk Administrator and then the array can be detached and deleted by the configurator. Users who may have created RAID-0 or RAID-5 arrays on previous IBM SSA adapters are advised that any data required on these disks MUST be migrated to either single SSA devices or RAID-1 arrays and the original arrays deleted BEFORE attaching to the IBM RAID Cluster Adapter. 4.0 SSA Resource Configuration and Event Logging ------------------------------------------------ 4.1 Text Configurator --------------------- The IBM SSA RAID and RAID Cluster Adapters are supplied with a text based resource configurator. This consists of three files which can be copied from the Windows NT Device Driver Diskette. cfgmenu.nls cfghelp.nls issacfg.exe NB : Do not run the PC-DOS version of the text configurator in a Windows NT command prompt. This configurator is further described in the DOS readme file. It is only supported with the IBM SSA RAID Adapter and the IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter. Press F1 for help during use. NB : When configuring RAID 5 arrays on the IBM SSA RAID Adapter use the default Strip size of 128; DO NOT use a smaller Strip size, as this may hang the adapter. In all cases we recommend you use the RSM configurator when in Windows NT. 4.2 RSM Configurator -------------------- This configurator supports all four IBM SSA RAID / SerialRAID Adapters. It is a web based Windows NT Service which can be used remotely to configure resources. It is available as a Stand Alone Windows NT Service and a Netfinity Manager Web Extension for versions 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2. For more information see the readmesa/nf.txt on the CD-ROM (provided with some adapters) or visit : http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa 4.3 SSA Event Logger -------------------- The SSA Event Logger is required to pick up and analyse important events occurring in the SSA subsystem. See elogger.txt on the CD-ROM provided with some adapters or visit : http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa 5.0 SSA Microcode Download Utilities ------------------------------------ IMPORTANT NOTES RE: MICROCODE DOWNLOADING ----------------------------------------- * Do NOT download whilst disks are performing I/O. * All open occurrences of the SSA Text/RSM Configurators should also be closed, prior to performing the download. Since RSM may be in use by a remote user, you should stop the "SSA Remote Systems Management" service prior to performing the download - remembering to restart it when all downloads have completed. * If your Windows NT boot device is an SSA Resource, YOU SHOULD NOT APPLY MICROCODE UPDATES FROM WINDOWS NT, see the DOS readme file from how to apply downloads from DOS. * Only use this utility program when instructed to do so by your service representative since downloading incorrect images, for example, could have a detrimental effect on your SSA Subsystem. * Errors may be generated in SSA Event Log. These can be ignored and are a result of adapter reset which is necessary to initialise the new microcode. 5.1 Adapter Firmware Download - ISSAADLD.EXE -------------------------------------------- ISSAADLD downloads an adapter microcode image to a specific SSA adapter, or to all SSA adapters of the correct type it can find. The LL or "Loadable Microcode Level" can be found in the Adapter VPD details viewable via the RSM configurator Adapter View page. IBM SSA Adapter Firmware Downloader for Windows, version 1.v (v is version number) usage: issaadld [-a node] [-q] [-p] firmware.Lxx flags: -a node identify adapter by node number (default all adapters) -q quiet mode (default is verbose) -p pause just before loading firmware firmware.Lxx input adapter firmware image file (xx is LL field) The adapter microcode image file type is identified by the file extension. xxxxxxxx.L03 : image file for LL03 IBM SSA RAID Adapters xxxxxxxx.L11 : image file for LL11 IBM SSA RAID Adapters xxxxxxxx.L04 : image file for LL04 IBM SerialRAID Adapters xxxxxxxx.L10 : image file for LL10 IBM RAID Cluster Adapters xxxxxxxx.L05 : image file for LL05 IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapters The adapter download program checks the "Loadable microcode field" in the adapter VPD in order that the wrong image is not inadvertently loaded to the card. Care should be taken if renaming the files that the file extension is not altered. NOTE: Versions of the ISSAADLD program prior to v1.7 supplied with this installation should NOT be used. IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter - single disks only (usually private). IBM SerialRAID Adapter - single disk, RAID-5, FW disk, FW RAID-5. IBM Advanced SerialRAID/X Adapter - single disk, RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-10. We strongly recommend not using RAID-5, or Fast-Write. 2) If your Windows NT boot device is an SSA resource, the SSA adapter must be installed in a PCI slot with a higher priority than that in which any SCSI adapter(s) with an active BIOS is installed. 3) With the IBM SSA RAID Cluster adapter if the operating system is to be on two clustered servers each with a PRIVATE SSA disk, then the following should be observed: During the early install process, the partner server is rebooted, the local private SSA disk becomes unavailable and setup cannot proceed. It is recommended that installation takes place on one server with the other powered down. Once completed it is then possible to install the next server with the first powered down. Partner servers should only be reset if the main machine has FULLY finished the boot sequence. Rebooting or resetting the partner machine at any other time may lead to failure of NT. 4) Operating in Microsoft Cluster Mode (MSCS) In some circumstances, when using a large number of arrays or older vintage disks, it is possible that resources are not unlocked during the shutdown of a host before the power is removed. In this event the resources are not visible at the other host and its is necessary to manually move the resources before full MSCS operation is possible. To avoid this the user may choose to stop all applications and switch off the Host (rather than shutdown). Using SSA disks manufactured after Sept 98 will also reduce the sensitivity of the problem. Whilst IBM takes great effort to ensure that all systems function correctly it is impossible to know what applications and APIs they will be used with. In order to reduce the sensitivity users should be aware of this problem and test for it during installation to maximum their operational availability. Please refer to the SSA Customer Support Homepage http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa for more information on how to avoid this problem in real configurations. 5) RAID 5 on the IBM SSA RAID Adapter (LL03 and LL11). If you create a RAID 5 array using the text configurator (ISSACFG), leave the Strip size at its default of 128. DO NOT use a smaller size as this may hang the adapter. Using RSM (recommended), you cannot change the Strip size. 6.1 Further Reading ------------------- The CD-ROM supplied with your adapter contains Adobe Acrobat (PDF) versions of the : Installation Guide User's Guide and Maintenance Information Manual These can be found in the \docs directory of the CD-ROM. PostScript versions are also supplied or visit : http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa APPENDIX A - IBM SSA RAID and RAID Cluster Adapters Compaq and HP PCI Slot Restrictions --------------------------------------------------- These Slot Restrictions relate to early SSA Adapter testing. More recent test results and known slot restrictions may be found at: http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ssa Compaq Installation Restrictions -------------------------------- ProLiant 1500 - A maximum of 2 Adapters is supported IBM SSA RAID / RAID Cluster adapters may be inserted into any of the three ProLiant 1500 slots. ProLiant 2500 - A maximum of 3 Adapters is supported IBM SSA RAID / RAID Cluster adapters may be inserted into any of the six ProLiant 2500 slots EXCEPT slot P6, where interference with the computer's chassis may cause damage to the SIMM module if the adapter is removed. The blue handle must be removed to place an adapter in slot P5. ProLiant 5000 - A Maximum of 3 Adapters is supported Some restrictions apply when populating both buses with IBM SSA RAID / RAID Cluster adapters due to a shared PCI bus problem apparent only in early models of the ProLiant 5000. The table below shows all restrictions. All other configurations are supported. Bus 0 Bus 1 RESTRICTION P6 P2 Can populate either PCI Slot but NOT both with SSA Adapters P7 P3 Can populate either PCI Slot but NOT both with SSA Adapters P8 P4 Can populate either PCI Slot but NOT both with SSA Adapters All slots may require minor adjustment of the card stabiliser, loosen one of the screws holding the plastic card stabiliser to the casing and re-align to accommodate as required, remembering to tighten the screw again when finished. The blue handle must be removed to place an adapter in slots P5, P6, P7 and P8. ProLiant 6000 - A Maximum of 3 Adapters is supported IBM SSA RAID / RAID Cluster adapters may be inserted into any of the nine ProLiant 6000 slots. Hewlett Packard Restrictions ---------------------------- Hewlett Packard NetServer LH Pro - A maximum of 3 adapters IBM SSA RAID / RAID Cluster adapters may be inserted into any of the five HP LH Netserver PCI slots. However the spacing of the PCI connectors in the LH may prevent two SSA cards, or an SSA card and another full length card from being placed in adjacent slots. The blue handle must be removed to place an adapter in Bus 0, slot P9 Hewlett Packard NetServer LX Pro - A maximum of 3 adapters IBM SSA RAID / RAID Cluster adapters may be inserted into any of the six HP LX Netserver PCI slots. However the spacing of the PCI connectors in the LX may prevent two SSA cards, or an SSA card and another full length card from being placed in adjacent slots. APPENDIX B - Text Configurator Error Codes ------------------------------------------ The Configurator displays error codes in a meaningful textual fashion. The error codes include: 0xfffd : General non-specific failure return code. 0xfffc : Hardware error. 0xfff8 : Illegal request. 0xfff0 : Not in table. Can't find disk with given serial number. 0xffe2 : Not yet implemented. 0xffef : Disk is currently offline. 0xffe0 : Not found. 0xfe1e : Array is broken or degraded. Some operations require a non-degraded array. 0xfe1a : NVRAM error. Its probably full with dormant entries. You could go and delete a few and then retry. 0xfe17 : Bad component exchange candidate. 0xfe18 : Array is broken. Some operations require a non-broken array. 0xfe13 : Bad new component serial number. New component is not suitable for component exchange. 0xfe11 : Bad disk serial number. Perhaps the disk went offline. 0xfe0c : Bad serial number. Perhaps there is already an array with this name. 0xff3a : Can't delete in-use resource. You can only delete dormant NVRAM entries. 0xff39 : Operation is not applicable for resource type. Perhaps you're trying to do a disk type of operation to an NVRAM entry (you can only list and delete these). 0xff38 : NVRAM is defective. The only sensible option here is to replace the module.
