ILE C/C++ Programmer's Guide

Chapter 17. Using ILE C/C++ Stream Functions with the iSeries Integrated File System

This chapter describes how to open, write, read, and update text and binary stream files through the iSeries Integrated File System (IFS).

IFS provides a common interface to store and operate on information in stream files. Examples of stream files are PC files, files in UNIX(R) systems, LAN server files, iSeries files, and folders.

Note:
The ILE C/C++ IFS-enabled stream I/O functions are defined through the integrated file system. You need to be familiar with the integrated file system to use the ILE C/C++ stream I/O function. Seven file systems comprise the integrated file system. Depending on your application and environment, you may use several of the file systems. If you have existing applications that use iSeries system files, you need to understand the limitations of the QSYS.LIB file system. If you have new applications, you can use the other file systems which do not have the QSYS.LIB file handling restrictions. See The Integrated File System (IFS) section for information on each file system.
