Plugging into the RSE

This section describes how to use the RSE extension points to extend the RSE.

The RSE is designed to be a single point of origin for users to access the tools that work with any remote resources. The file system resource support that comes with the RSE is but one example of the types of resources that tools which build on the RSE can access. By using the RSE extension point, tool writers can:

  1. Add pop-up menus to remote resources shown in the RSE views.
  2. Add property pages to the Properties dialog of remote resources shown in the RSE views.
  3. Add a new system type to the New Connection wizard, so that tools can be scoped to resources within connections to that new system type.
  4. Add a new subsystem that appears under a connection. A subsystem is in fact a tool that acts against remote resources. It displays remote resources when expanded, and supports pop-up actions against those resources.

Further, there a number of Eclipse extension points that can be used to affect the Remote System Explorer views.

This guide introduces the steps in creating extensions for each of these RSE extension points.
