How to connect to an Informix database from WebSphere Application Server 4.0.x
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
How can Informix be used as the administrative repository database or an application database for WebSphere Application Server 4.0.x?

Solution
WebSphere Application Server supports Informix Dynamic Server 7.31, 9.21 (or 2000), and 9.3 through the Informix 2.20 JC2 JDBC driver or later (ifxjdbc.jar and ifxjdbcx.jar).

To use Informix for the administrative repository database, make the following changes to the admin.config file:

  1. Add ifxjdbc.jar and ifxjdbcx.jar to the end of the Dws.ext.dirs property.
  2. Set the following database settings:
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.dbserverName - The name of the Informix instance on the server.
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.dbportNumber - The port on which the instance is listening.
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.dbifxIFXHOST - The physical name of the database server.
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.dbdatabaseName - The name of the database from which the data source will obtain connections.
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.dbuser - The user name used when obtaining connections.
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.dbpassword - The password for the specified user name.
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.dbinformixLockModeWait - Although not required, this property enables you to set the number of seconds that Informix waits for a lock. By default, Informix throws an exception if it cannot immediately acquire a lock.

To use Informix as an application database, follow these steps:
  1. In the Administrative Console, right-click JDBC Providers, then select New. Select the com.informix.jdbcx.IfxConnectionPoolDataSource or com.informix.jdbcx.IfxXADataSource as shown below:

  2. Under Nodes, select Install New, then select the node name.
  3. Click Specify Driver, then select the locations of ifxjdbc.jar and ifxjdbcx.jar on the system. Click Install. When finished, the window looks like this:

  4. Click OK. The Informix JDBC Provider is installed.
  5. Expand the newly-created JDBC Provider, right-click Data Sources, then select New.
  6. Type a name for the data source and provide values for the seven required properties as shown below:

  7. Click OK. The data source is now created. Use the Test Connection button on the Administrative Console to test the connectivity of the data source.
