WebSphere Application Server installation directories needed for a remote Web server plug-in
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
Which WebSphere® Application Server installation directories must be present on a remote Web server for the plug-in to function properly?

Cause
During the installation of the WebSphere Application Server plug-in on a remote Web server, the entire WebSphere Application Server installation directory structure is created. The creation of this directory structure can use over 100 MB of disk space.

In fact, the WebSphere Application Server plug-in needs only a small subset of these directories to function. All other directories and files can be deleted at your discretion.

This applies only to remote Web server machines that do not have the full WebSphere Application Server product installed. Do not delete these directories for local installations of WebSphere Application Server.

Solution
The following directories are required by the WebSphere Application Server plug-in:
  • install_root/bin

  • install_root/config
All sub-directories under the config directory are also required.

  • install_root/etc

  • install_root/java
Required to use updateInstaller and other maintenance tools.

  • install_root/logs

install_root refers to the WebSphere Application Server installation directory path. For example, on AIX® platforms, the default install_root is "/usr/WebSphere/AppServer".
