In most cases the answer is no.
The EJB specification disallows it for all EJBs. It is discouraged in
Web modules by the J2EE specification.
However, WebSphere may allow the thread to be created. It will not have
a J2EE context associated with it. A likely problem is the inability to do
JNDI lookups. Other functions, such as security, that need this context
will not work.
WebSphere Application Server Enterprise Edition Version 5 and WebSphere
Application Server Version 6 both enable using separate threads through
the Asynchronous Beans function.
