Defined custom error pages not displayed correctly in Microsoft® Internet Explorer
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
You have defined a custom error page within your Web application. The error pages that you defined are very simple and display simple messages; for example: "404 File not Found" or "500 Internal Server Error".

However, when an error occurs, your corresponding custom error page does not display. You receive a different error code and description at the bottom of the message; for example: "The page cannot be displayed".

Solution
To ensure that your error pages display, modify the following Internet Explorer settings:
  1. Select Tools > Internet Options > Advanced.
  2. Uncheck the Show friendly HTTP error messages.

This is a client side work-around. The real resolution to this problem is to ensure that the defined error page is at least 8 k in size. An error page of 8 k or greater overrides any default settings in the browser. This ensures that the custom error page is displayed regardless of the configuration of browser.
