Performance monitoring considerations using Performance Monitoring Infrastructure
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
What is the overhead associated with WebSphere® Application Server Performance Monitoring Infrastructure (PMI)?

Cause
WebSphere Application Server seems slower when PMI is enabled.

Solution
Performance monitoring comes with a slight cost. Efforts have been made to keep this cost to a minimum and the PMI service is disabled as the default.

After the PMI service is enabled, you can adjust the level and scope of monitoring. Make these adjustments using the Tivoli Performance Viewer, or through the Administrative Console of the WebSphere Application Server.

The TradeScenario benchmark test was used for performance comparisons and the overhead of PMI was measured. When the standard setting was used, the overhead was 3.0%. Significant performance degradation was observed when JVMPI counters were enabled.
