Identifying the default TCP/IP port number that Microsoft SQL Server database is listening on

Problem
The default TCP/IP port that the Microsoft SQL Server should listen on when accepting connections from TCP/IP Sockets clients is 1433. If this default value had changed, how do you find out the value so that you have the correct value for your data source's configuration
 
 
Solution
Go to the server where your Microsoft SQL Server database is running and

Start > All programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Server Network utility

From the SQL Server Network utility windows, under Enabled protocols, select TCP/IP and click the Properties... button as follows:




You will then see the value for the value for the Default port. In this example, the default TCP/IP port is 1080:



Click Cancel to go back to the previous windows and Cancel again to exit the SQL Server Network utility.
