How to create a WebSphere Application Server Data Source using Merant SequeLink JDBC Driver via WebSphere 4.0.x Administrative Console?
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
Creating WebSphere Data Source using Merant SequeLink JDBC Driver 5.1

Solution
From the Administrative Console, expand WebSphere Administrative Domain. Expand Resources

I. Create JDBC Provider

Right click on JDBC Providers and select "New..."

From the "JDBC Provider Properties" window:
Under the General tab, enter the Name and Implementation class where the Implementation class must be:
com.merant.sequelink.jdbcx.datasource.SequeLinkDataSource

Note:
Click on the "..." button to select the above class from the "Select an Implementation Class" window to avoid making a typo.

Under the Nodes tab:
Click the "Install New..." button
In the "Install Driver" window, select your node. In the Driver file field, enter the fully qualified path name for the two jar files for SequeLink JDBC Driver (sljc.jar and sljcx.jar) using a semicolon as a separator. The jar files reside in <WAS_HOME>/lib (where <WAS_HOME> is the WebSphere installation directory, e.g. c:\WebSphere\AppServer).

Note: You can also click on the "Specify Driver..." button, then click on the "Add Driver" button from the "Specify the Driver Files" window. Then use the file browser to select the sljc.jar and repeat the same process to select sljcx.jar. On the "Specify the Driver Files" window, click the Set button.

From the "Install Driver" window, click the Install button.
From the "JDBC Provider Properties" window, click the OK button.

II. Create Data Source
Expand the JDBC Provider created from step I (above)
Right click on Data Sources and select "New..."
In the Data Source Properties window:
Under the General tab, enter the required parameters (marked with red asterisk). For example:

Name : MySQLServerDS
serverName : Universe
portNumber : 19996
user : test
password : test

Notes:
"serverName" is the hostname or IP address of the server where SequeLink service is running.
"portNumber" is the port number that SequeLink Service is listening on. To verify the port it is listening on, use the "netstat" command:
Windows:
C:\> netstat -na | findstr 19996
UNIX:
$ netstat -na | grep 19996
The output should be something like:
TCP 0.0.0.0:19996 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

"user" is the user name for connecting to the database when no user ID and password pair is specified by the application. If the user is specified, the default password must also be specified.

WebSphere 4.0.2+ includes a Test Connection button on the Data Source Properties window that can be used to test the connection.

Click OK to create the data source.
