PQ72365: USING THE DATADIRECT CONNECT JDBC DRIVER WITH SPY ENABLED, "THISDRIVER IS LOCKED FOR USE WITH EMBEDDED APPLICATIONS" EXCEPTION

APAR status
Closed as Vendor Solution.

Error description
Using the WebSphere-branded Data Direct Connect (type 4) JDBC
Driver to connect to a SQLServer database from WebSphere
Application Server 4.0.x, if spy logging is enabled for the
driver, the following exception might be created when trying to
get a connection from the data source:
java.sql.SQLException: [IBM][SQLServer JDBC Driver]This driver
is locked for use with embedded applications

You can set the spyAttibutes property for the data source in the
administrative console.

This will occur when using the driver for WebSphere 4.0.4 and
above, or an earlier fixpak with
PQ62295 or a later connection
manager cumulative fix applied. The problem will only happen
when spy is enabled.
Local fix
Disable spy logging. You can disable spy logging by leaving the
spyAttributes custom data source property blank and not enabling
database trace in WebSphere Application Server. For details on
the spyAttribute custom data source setting, see the Data
Direct Technologies Connection JDBC driver documentation.
Problem summary Problem conclusion Temporary fix Comments
This issue was caused by a problem in the DataDirect ConnectJDBC
2.2 driver. When spy support was enabled on the driver, the
call from WebSphere to the connections unlock method failed.
This resulted in an SQLException stating "This driver is locked
for use with embedded applications." when the connections were
used.
This was reported to DataDirect under case number 15004707,
and a fix was provided by DataDirect. This fix is included
in ConnectJDBC drivers version 2.2.0031 and above.
