WebSphere Admin Server crashing with exit code 11 on Linux platforms
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
In a long running test with an application such as the loginServlet (sample application shipped with WebSphere) using about 120 to 150 users, the nanny will restart the admin server every 45 minutes after it has terminated abnormally with an exit code 11 in the nanny trace.

Solution
A segment of the nanny trace shows:

[10/9/02 16:08:44:099 EDT] 5e38d793 Nanny E AdminServer exited with exit code of 11
[10/9/02 16:08:44:100 EDT] 5e38d793 Nanny E Restarting Adminserver: abnormal exit.

The tracefile will keep showing that admin server is opened for e-business each time a restart occurs.

The new production JDK(TM) on WebSphere Application Server 4.0.3 for Linux Redhat and SuSE does not support glibc-2.2.2. The kernel may be at 2.4.x but the libc is at a lower level. Customers running WebSphere AppServer 4.0.3 on all Linux platforms need to upgrade their glibc to the 2.2.4 level. Kernel levels at 2.4.x are supported, but only after upgrading the glibc to 2.2.4.

If additional information is needed, consult the WebSphere Application Server 4.0.3 Release Notes on Linux about the glibc prerequisite problem. Here is one example documented in the Release Notes at this URL:

Updating the values of kernels and glibc when apply WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0.3 on RedHat (Defect 119386.RN)

Due to a Linux kernel defect in kernels < 2.4.10, the floating stack support in the JDK does not work correctly on SMP machines. To apply WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0.3 on an SMP machine, the kernel needs to be >= 2.4.10 and glibc needs to be = 2.2.4. Please check with your distribution provider for kernel and glibc upgrades.
