Leveraging WinVNC for remote administration
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
WinVNC is remote control client and server software that can be leveraged to assist in the administration of remote systems.

Solution
WinVNC is a FREEWARE tool that can be leveraged on multiple operating system platforms for personal use only. For business use, licenses are available for purchase and information can be found on the RealVNC website below.

VNC consists of two components, a server and a viewer. The server generates the display and the viewer draws the display. One can view a remote server using one of two methods:

1) Via a web browser that supports Java™, you can open a URL to http://machinename:5800 which is the default port (it can be set to any port) on which the remote control server runs.

2) There is a version for Windows®, Linux®, Solaris 7, Solaris 9 and HP-UX 11/11i. There are also builds contributed by others that can be found by using popular search engines.
