How to configure JVM settings for WebSphere Application Server Single Server
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
This document explains how to configure JVM™ options for WebSphere® Application Server Single Server

Solution
Follow these steps to access the JVM Settings in the WebSphere Application Server administrative console:
  1. On the left side of the WebSphere Application Server administrative console, expand Nodes under WebSphere Administrative Domain.

  2. Expand node name.

  3. Expand Application Servers.

  4. Expand Default Server.

  5. Expand Process Definition.

  6. Click JVM Settings.

  7. JVM Settings is shown on the right side of the console.

You can configure these JVM settings:

  • Classpath
The standard classpath in which the Java™ virtual machine looks for classes. This property can contain multiple paths separated by colons ( : ) or semicolons ( ; ) depending on the operating system of the node.
  • Boot Classpath
Some JVMs contain an option to specify bootstrap classes and resources. This property can contain multiple paths separated by colons ( : ) or semicolons ( ; )depending on the operating system of the node.
  • Verbose Mode Class
Enables verbose debugging output for class loading
  • Verbose Mode Garbage Collection
Enables verbose debug output for garbage collection
  • Verbose Mode JNI
Enables verbose debugging output for native method invocation
  • Initial Heap Size
The initial heap size available to the JVM, in megabytes.
  • Maximum Heap Size
The maximum heap size available to the JVM, in megabytes.
  • Run HProf
Enable HProf profiler support. To use another profiler, use the command line property to specify settings for the custom profiler.
  • Hprof Arguments
Additional profiler arguments to use when Run HProf is used
  • Debug Mode
    Enables the JVM debug output
  • Debug Arguments
When Debug Mode for the Java virtual machine is enabled, this property allows additional debug arguments to be passed to the Java virtual machine
  • Disable JIT
Disables the Just In Time (JIT) compiler option of the JVM

For additional command line arguments for the JVM, edit server-cfg.xml file. Adding command line arguments to Generic Command Line Arguments in AdminConsole causes server startup failure.
  1. Edit the server-cfg.xml file found in WAS_HOME/config directory.

  2. Search on command and find commandLineArgument="".

  3. In the empty quotes, add additional command line arguments for the JVM.

  4. Recycle the Application Server.
