References to WebSphere Application Server v4 samples are placed in the Web server configuration file, even if WebSphere samples are not installed
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
The Web server configuration files must be modified during the installation of the plug-in components for WebSphere® Application Server v4. Administrators must be aware that if they choose to allow the WebSphere installer to modify the configuration the files, they might be modified to include references to the samples.

Cause
The Web server configuration files must be modified during the installation of the plug-in components for WebSphere Application Server v4. This is necessary to allow the Web server to interact with the Application Server.

Solution
This behavior is by design. Administrators must be aware that the Web server configuration files might be modified to include references to the WebSphere samples if they choose to allow WebSphere to configure the Web server files.

Some environments, such as remote Web server configurations, are configured in such a way that the installer cannot determine whether it is appropriate to include references to the WebSphere samples in the Web server configuration files. The references to these samples are included by default in the Web server configuration files to minimize the effort required to set up the WebSphere samples.

Administrators who do not want the sample entries in their Web server configuration files have two options:

  1. Review the Web server configuration files after installing WebSphere and remove entries that reference WSsamples. Best practices dictate that an administrator review such files before any Web server goes to production.
  2. Choose not to allow the WebSphere installer to configure the Web server configuration files, or allow it to configure a dummy file. Then manually configure the Web server configuration files so they can interact with the WebSphere plug-in.

How to do this varies between WebSphere versions, methods of installation, and Web server product. Refer to the Information Center for more information. For additional assistance, refer to the Information Center article under Releated information.
