Installing the product offerings
Use IBM® Installation Manager to install WebSphere® Application Server traditional and associated software on supported operating systems.
Before you begin
- Read the hardware and software requirements on the Supported hardware and software website.
- Prepare for installation and learn about IBM Installation Manager.
Installation Manager is a single installation program that can use remote or local software repositories to install, modify, or update WebSphere Application Server products. Before you use Installation Manager, refer to the Installation Manager documentation for a description of the various options that you can specify when you install the Installation Manager.
In general, it is recommended that you install new copies of product offerings at new fix-pack levels rather than upgrading existing levels that are in use. By installing a new copy, you can apply corrective service to both the old and new levels if necessary. You can uninstall any older levels when you no longer need them.
About this task
- Automatically checks prerequisites
- Looks for a previous WebSphere Application Server installation to determine whether you can add features to the product binaries or to install a new set of product binaries
- Installs the necessary product binaries
If you run into problems when you install the product, see the troubleshooting information at Troubleshooting installation.
Procedure
- Plan your installation as described in Planning the product installation.
- Prepare your operating platform for installation as described in Preparing the z/OS operating system for installation.
- Install IBM Installation Manager if it is not already
installed.
For more information, see:
- Access the product repositories that Installation Manager uses to install the product.
For more information, see Accessing product repositories on z/OS.
- Install the product and any optional components.
You can install the following product offerings:
- Install WebSphere Application Server with the required Java™ SDK.
WebSphere Application Server is the traditional application server runtime environment. For information about installing WebSphere Application Server, see Installing WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.
For transitioning users: IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition, Version 8 is the Java SDK version for WebSphere Application Server Version 9.0. IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition is no longer embedded with any WebSphere Application Server offerings. The Java SDK is available as a separate offering that must be installed when you install the product.trns
- Install IBM HTTP Server for WebSphere Application Server.
IBM HTTP Server is a web server based on the Apache HTTP Server developed by the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). This product provides advanced web server capabilities and a consistent cross-platform build of the Apache HTTP Server.
After you install a WebSphere Application Server product, you can use the application server to serve applications over the Internet. It is not necessary to install the IBM HTTP Server or another web server.
The installation solution diagrams in Planning the product installation show the components that are present in different types of environments.
For more information about installing IBM HTTP Server, see Migrating and installing IBM HTTP Server on z/OS systems.
- Install the Web Server Plug-ins for IBM
WebSphere Application Server.
If you install the IBM HTTP Server or another web server, you must then install a binary module for the web server to enable it to communicate with WebSphere Application Server products. For more information, see Installing Web Server Plug-ins for IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.
After you install a web server plug-in, you can use the Web Server Plug-ins Configuration Tool to create a new element in the application server configuration called a web server definition. You can then manage applications for the web server using the administrative console.
Restrictions:- If a Beta version of the product is installed, uninstall it before you install this version.
- Important: If you move or extract a product repository, do not transfer the content of a repository in non-binary mode and do not convert any content on extraction.
- The Installation Manager web interface, which is included in Installation Manager Version 1.8.0 and later, does not work with WebSphere Application Server Version 9.0 offerings.
- Install WebSphere Application Server with the required Java™ SDK.
