You must prepare your system to migrate from WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® Version 6.1, 7.x, or 8.0 to Version 8.5.
Before you begin
Supported configurations: This
article is about configuration migration, such as migrating deployment
managers and federated nodes in a network deployment environment.
The Application Migration Toolkit for WebSphere Application Server
provides support for migrating applications from previous versions
of WebSphere Application Server to the latest product version. For
information about migrating applications, read more about the Application
Migration Toolkit.

WebSphere Application Server for z/OS supports migration paths to
Version 8.5 from the following
releases:
- Version 6.1
- Version 7.x
- Version 8.0
In addition to migration, it is possible for these WebSphere Application Server versions to coexist with
Version 8.5.
To learn more
about the migration utilities, read Overview of migration, coexistence, and interoperability. When you are getting ready to migrate to Version 8.5, read Premigration considerations and Migrating z/OS stand-alone application servers, Migrating WebSphere Application Server, Network Deployment configurations on the z/OS operating system, or Migrating federated nodes for z/OS for planning and migration information.
Procedure
- Read the "Task overview: Installing" article in the information
center.
This document will give you a basic understanding
of what is involved with installing the product.
- Install the Version 8.5 product.
Read the following articles in the information
center for details:
- Planning for installation
- Installing the product and additional software
- To learn about preparing your environment for migration,
read the "Preparing the base operating system" article in the information
center.
You should also plan for any new features that
you might want to include. Use the instructions and tips:
- For system requirements, read the "Hardware and software requirements
on z/OS" article in the information center.
- For server security (RACF®), read the "Security planning
overview" article in the information center.
- For workload management (WLM), read the "Workload management (WLM)
for z/OS" article in the information center.
- Review the "Ensuring problem avoidance" article in the
information center, making sure that each task has been completed
before you begin.
- Review Migrating and coexisting application servers to
determine whether you want the two versions of the product to coexist
in the same environment or you want to perform a complete migration.
- Capture the variables used in the current installation.
This information will be useful in planning for the new installation,
ensuring that you define unique ports, and planning for the configuration
file system structure.
