This article is about configuration migration, such as migrating deployment managers and federated nodes in a network deployment environment. The Application Migration Toolkit for WebSphere Application Server provides support for migrating applications from previous versions of WebSphere Application Server to the latest product version. For information about migrating applications, read more about the Application Migration Toolkit.

Review the migration planning information. See Knowledge Collection: Migration planning for WebSphere® Application Server .

This section documents the migration of WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid Version 6.1.1 on WebSphere Application Server Version 6.x, 7.x or 8.0 to WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5. You can also use these steps to migrate the Feature Pack for Modern Batch 1.0.0.x.

Before you migrate WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid Version 6.1.1 and above to Version 8.5, you must install WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid Fix Pack 3 and cumulative interim fix PM39203. Migration from any version of the Feature Pack for Modern Batch 1.0.0.x is supported. You must also install either interim fix 8.5.0.1-WS-WASND-TFPM66821, or Fix Pack 8.5.0.1 or higher.

About this task

You can use the command-line tools to migrate a cell from a previous version of WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid to Version 8.5. The cell configuration consists of a deployment manager with one or more nodes, a web server, and an application client. All ports are migrated forward into the new configuration. This procedure assumes that the previous configuration is running. WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid does not support remote migration.

Avoid trouble Avoid trouble: Ensure that your setting for the maximum number of open files is 10000 or greater. If the number of open files is too low, it can cause various migration failures.gotcha

Procedure

  1. Back up current deployment manager and node configuration
  2. Install WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5
  3. Prepare cells for migration to WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5
  4. Create the target deployment manager profile
  5. Save the current deployment manager configuration to the migration backup directory
  6. Back up the current deployment manager compute grid configuration
  7. Restore the previous deployment manager configuration
  8. Update existing system applications and data
  9. Back up the Version 8.5 migrated deployment manager configuration
  10. Stop existing Compute Grid or Feature Pack nodes
  11. Start the Version 8.5 deployment manager
  12. Migrate backed-up compute grid data to the new deployment manager
  13. Back up the Version 8.5 migrated deployment manager configuration
  14. Migrate plug-ins for web servers
  15. Migrate application client installations
  16. Migrate databases
  17. Migrate nodes
