WebSphere Extended Deployment 6.0.1 support for WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.2

This section discusses the WebSphere Extended Deployment 6.0.1 support for WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.2. It explains the sample topology of WebSphere Portal in a WebSphere Extended Deployment environment, the installation of WebSphere Extended Deployment and WebSphere Portal, and the configuration of WebSphere Extended Deployment for enhancing WebSphere Portal. The support discussed in this section applies to WebSphere Application Server 6.0.2.5, WebSphere Extended Deployment 6.0.1, WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.1, and WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.2 fix pack.

Before you begin

WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.2 contains installation artifacts that are not a part of a Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application. Note the following limitations:
  • You cannot install multiple versions of WebSphere Portal. WebSphere Extended Deployment provides support for managing multiple versions of an application. However, this feature is not supported for WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.2.
  • WebSphere Extended Deployment contains dynamic clusters. Each dynamic cluster has an associated node group. When deploying WebSphere Portal into a dynamic cluster, manually install WebSphere Portal on each node of the node group. If a new node is later added to the node group, manually install WebSphere Portal on the new node before adding the new node to the node group. After you install WebSphere Portal on the node and add the node to the node group, WebSphere Extended Deployment automatically starts and stops application servers that run WebSphere Portal to meet the current demand.
  • WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.2 cannot be deployed to multiple clusters, static or dynamic, within the same cell.

Sample topology

When WebSphere Extended Deployment is installed, another element is added called the on demand router (ODR). The ODR dynamically routes incoming requests to the appropriate WebSphere Portal nodes based on available resources. The ODR also gathers statistics that are useful for intelligent health management and monitoring. A typical clustered WebSphere Portal environment consists of the following elements:
  • WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment
  • One or more WebSphere Portal servers
  • An on demand router (ODR)
  • A database server, typically DB2
The following diagram depicts a typical clustered environment when using WebSphere Extended Deployment with WebSphere Portal.
