Preparing the hosting environment for dynamic operations

Dynamic operations monitor the application server environment and make optimizations or recommendations that are based on the data that is observed. To prepare a hosting environment for dynamic operation capabilities, you must first configure your environment.

Before you begin

.

About this task

To set up the dynamic operations environment you must create node groups, on demand routers, servers and dynamic clusters. You can then deploy your applications and define service policies. The autonomic managers work with these elements to maximize the performance of your environment.

Procedure

  1. Create node groups. A node group contains nodes that have similar capabilities. Use node groups to create a resource pool of similar functions that can be shared or used for failover support. Create a node group for your dynamic cluster.
  2. Create an on demand router (ODR). The on demand router is a proxy server that can route work to servers. See Creating ODRs for more information.

[For distributed platforms] The ODR cannot run on a node that is in a node group that dynamic clusters use.

  3. Create dynamic clusters. When in automatic mode, WebSphere Extended Deployment can automatically control the size and placement of dynamic clusters on the nodes. In supervised mode, the administrator can review information and suggested actions that are provided by WebSphere Extended Deployment in the form of runtime tasks. See Creating dynamic clusters for more information.
  4. Optional: If your dynamic clusters are running in supervised mode, you receive notifications of runtime tasks that are proposed by the system for changes to the configuration or runtime. To view and act upon these tasks in the administrative console, click Runtime operations > Task management > Runtime tasks. You can also configure e-mail notifications to send to specified users when runtime tasks occur. See Defining e-mail notification for more information.

Results

You configured the underlying hosting environment to support dynamic operations. The autonomic managers can use your configuration to automatically manage your environment.

What to do next

After your environment is prepared for dynamic operations, you can deploy an enterprise application with defined service levels.
