The dynamic operations environment, consisting of the autonomic, or on demand, features of WebSphere Extended Deployment supports three modes of operation: manual, supervised, and automatic.
Defining the mode of the operating environment involves configuring the WebSphere Extended Deployment components. You might find that you want a mixed environment, with some components running automatically, or autonomically, while others are not. Flexibility is built into the product to support logical systems, rather than a switch to turn things on or off. In addition, WebSphere Extended Deployment supports a supervised operating mode, where the system administrator accepts or denies the recommendations of the autonomic managers.

It is clear from the previous table that WebSphere Extended Deployment is flexible in allowing the autonomic features of the product to be integrated into customer environments. It is likely that customers interested in exploiting the autonomic features will want to take full advantage of most, if not all of them. By providing control at this level of granularity, WebSphere Extended Deployment allows easier problem determination and a greater ability to customize the product to match customer environments.
