Defining e-mail notification

In addition to actively monitoring tasks through the Runtime Tasks panel, you can also have e-mail notifications sent to specified users when runtime tasks occur. Use this panel to configure and modify cell-wide task notification and e-mail parameters.

Before you begin

When security is enabled, some fields are not available without proper authorization.

[Version 6.0.1 and later] You must have configurator administrative privileges to define e-mail notification.

About this task

By defining e-mail notification, you can be notified by an e-mail when runtime tasks are generated. The sender user ID is preset to wasxd. Your SMTP registry might require the sender user ID to be registered before the WebSphere Extended Deployment cell can successfully send e-mail notifications.

Procedure

  1. In the administrative console, click Runtime operations > Task management > Notifications.
  2. In the SMTP hostname field, enter the simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) server to connect to when sending mail. Validation is not performed on the server host name.
  3. In the Port number field, enter the SMTP port number to connect to when sending mail. Valid port number values are between 1 and 64767. Validation that the port is the correct SMTP port is not performed.
  4. In the SMTP user ID field, enter your user ID if your mail transport host requires authentication. Leave this field blank if your mail server does not require authentication.
  5. In the SMTP password field, enter your password if your mail transport host requires authentication. Leave this field blank if your mail server does not require authentication.
  6. Select Enable notifications to use e-mail notifications. When notifications are enabled, and a task is generated, an e-mail notification is sent to each of the e-mail addresses that you specify.
  7. In the E-mail address field, enter the address for notification, and click Add. Each e-mail address is validated for syntax. You can enter multiple addresses to this list. To take an existing address off the list, select the address, and click Remove.
  8. When all of the changes are made, click Test E-mail to verify that the e-mail is sent for a given task. If the e-mail server uses spam-blocking software, this test can fail and prevent the e-mail from displaying in the test in-box. To save your changes, click Apply or OK.

Results

When notification is enabled, an e-mail is sent to each of the specified addresses when a task is generated. When notification is enabled and no e-mail addresses are specified, no e-mails are sent.
