Using the Migration wizard

This topic provides you with the steps for using the Migration wizard to migrate from WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 5.1 to Version 6.0.1.

Before you begin

For migration to succeed, cell and node names must match for both WebSphere Application Server Version 5.1 / WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 5.1, and WebSphere Application Server Version 6.0.2 / WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.1. Since WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.1 does not support a mixed WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 5.1 and WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.1 environment, all WebSphere Extended Deployment nodes must be migrated together. Therefore, the runtime must be upgraded to WebSphere Application Server Version 6.0.2 and WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.1 on all nodes. The WebSphere Application Server migration process must be performed on the deployment manager and all WebSphere Extended Deployment application server nodes. Finally, the WebSphere Extended Deployment migration process is performed on the deployment manager. The Migration wizard is the graphical interface to the migration command line tool, XDUpgrade, in the bin directory of the installation root. The wizard collects values for migration tool parameters, checks for valid migration directories, issues the migration commands, and monitors the progress of the migration tools. The migration process from WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 5.1 to Version 6.0.1 requires three steps before you use the Migration wizard:
  1. Migrate your WebSphere Application Server. Follow the instructions provided in the WebSphere Application Server Installation Guide.
  2. Use the WebSphere Extended Deployment Installation wizard to install Version 6.0.1 system files, which are binary modules. Use the new WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.1 installer program called the Profile wizard to create the environment for each Application Server instance, including the deployment manager, managed nodes, and stand-alone Application Servers.
  3. Use this Migration wizard to migrate a previous WebSphere Extended Deployment installation to a Version 6.0.1 profile.
For a more comprehensive overview of migration requirements and restrictions, see the Help for Migration wizard panels section of the Installation Guide (the InstallGuide_en.html file) in the docs directory on the product CD.
