Configuring Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator to work with WebSphere Extended Deployment

If a node group becomes overloaded and needs more servers, Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator can obtain more physical computing resources from servers that are outside the node group. When WebSphere Extended Deployment needs more servers, Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator can automatically install WebSphere Extended Deployment on outside servers and configure the server network connectivity.

Before you begin

Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator and WebSphere Extended Deployment must be installed.

About this task

Use Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator with WebSphere Extended Deployment to obtain more physical computing resources from outside a node group. You can share servers among multiple application environments with multiple WebSphere Application Server cells or environments that are not using WebSphere software. Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator can be useful in complex situations, such as when sharing resources between a WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0 system and other data center systems, or when two different applications that are installed on two different dynamic clusters backed by different node groups require different access to resources in the data center.

Procedure

  1. Verify that every node in the WebSphere Extended Deployment configuration belongs to at least one node group that is not the DefaultNodeGroup node group. By default, new nodes are added to the DefaultNodeGroup node group. However, dynamic clusters cannot be backed by the DefaultNodeGroup node group. Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator cannot manage the DefaultNodeGroup node group.
  2. Install the was-xd.tcdriver driver. See Installing the WebSphere Extended Deployment driver into Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator for more information.
  3. Create a WebSphere Extended Deployment model in the Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator data center model. See Configuring WebSphere Extended Deployment in the Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator data center model for more information.
  4. Set the properties that WebSphere Extended Deployment requires. See Configuration properties for Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator for more information.
  5. Optional: Configure Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator to use silent installation to automatically provision nodes to WebSphere Extended Deployment. If you are using Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator to automate only part of the work, for example, adding nodes into a node group, you can install WebSphere Extended Deployment manually. See Silent installation for more information.

[Version 6.0.1 and later] With WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.0.1 or later, you can create a file repository to hold your installation images instead of creating an installation image on each node. See Configuring a Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator file repository for more information.

  6. Configure the WebSphere Extended Deployment installation in the Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator data center model. You can create a data center model in the following ways:

Results

Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator can obtain more physical computing resources when WebSphere Extended Deployment needs more servers.

What to do next

[Version 6.0.1 and later] After a node is added into the business grid node group by the Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator workflow, you must perform manual configuration steps on the newly created application server instance. See Configuring business grid to work with Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator .
