Installing IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19 on a Windows system

Note that IBM HTTP Server is installed as part of the WebSphere Application Server installation. These instructions provide additional information on installing, configuring, and testing IBM HTTP Server.

The steps in this section cover instructions for the following tasks:

Obtaining IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19

IBM HTTP Server is provided on the product CD with WebSphere Application Server. Also, you can obtain IBM HTTP Server by downloading files from the IBM Web site, http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/download.html. The IBM Web site provides information on the latest versions of IBM HTTP Server and instructions for downloading it to your machine.

Installing IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19

Perform the steps below to install IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19. These steps assume that you have the WebSphere Application Server product CD or that the downloaded file provides the \httpd subdirectory with installation files for IBM HTTP Server.

  1. Ensure that you are logged into the host machine with administrative privileges.
  2. Run drive_letter:\httpd\Setup.exe, where drive_letter is the letter for your CD-ROM drive or the letter for the machine drive and directory containing the WebSphere installation program files.
  3. If the Choose Setup Language window is displayed, select a language and click OK
  4. Select Next at the Welcome dialog.
  5. The License Agreement is displayed. Read the agreement and click Yes to accept it.
  6. The Choose Destination Location dialog is displayed. Click Next to accept the default location (C:\Program Files\IBM HTTP Server\), or click Browse to select a different location.
  7. The Setup Type dialog is displayed and prompts you to choose either Compact, Custom, or Typical as the installation type. Click the option you desire. These instructions assume that you choose Typical. Click Next to continue with the installation.
  8. The Select Program Folder dialog is displayed. It shows the default name (IBM HTTP Server) to be used in the Programs menu to identify the program. Click Next to accept that name, or type a different name by overwriting the default name, and click Next.
  9. The Information for Service Setup window is displayed. Type the user ID, the password that the program is to use when it is installed as a service on your machine, and the verifying password. Click Install to continue with the installation.

Note: Use the Windows NT User Manager tool to create a new user ID and password, if needed. If this machine is a Domain Controller, see the drive_letter:\Program Files\IBM HTTP Server\README file for information on an additional step you need to perform. For the latest README file, see http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/doc/v1319/readme.html#top.

  10. A message is displayed to indicate that the installation was successful. Click Finish to complete the installation process.
  11. You are prompted to choose whether to read the README file now or at another time. Indicate your choice and click Next to continue with the installation.
  12. You are prompted to choose between restarting your machine now or restarting it at another time. Do not restart your computer at this time. Instead, add the configuration information indicated in "Configuring the IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19" before restarting your machine.
  13. Proceed to "Configuring IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19."

Configuring IBM HTTP Server 1.3.19

IBM HTTP Server is configured in the following file:

drive_letter:\IBM HTTP Server\conf\httpd.conf
See IBM HTTP Server documentation for information on available options. The httpd.conf file contains default configuration settings. After completing the following configuration steps, you can perform configuration tasks more easily by using the IBM HTTP Administration Console. See "Testing the installation of IBM HTTP Server" for information on accessing this tool.

Change the setting for the ServerName attribute for your server in the httpd.conf file by following these steps:

  1. Open a text editor such as Notepad, Editpad or WordPad to edit the file drive_letter:\Program Files\IBM HTTP Server\conf\httpd.conf.
  2. Scroll to the line #ServerName new.host.name. Following this comment, add a line specifying the domain name of your machine (your host name).

You can find your host name by entering hostname at a command prompt. For example, if entering hostname at a command prompt returns smith, go to the line #ServerName new.host.name in the httpd.conf file. On the next line, add ServerName smith. The file now shows:

    #ServerName new.host.name ServerName smith
  3. Save the file and restart your computer.
  4. Proceed to "Testing the installation of IBM HTTP Server."

Testing the installation of IBM HTTP Server
