Accessing the product documentation

To enable us to bring you the latest and most accurate documentation, WebSphere Application Server documentation is available through a two-tiered delivery system. A small portion of the documentation is installed with the product. All of the documentation is available from the library page of the product Web page (URL provided below). You can return to the Web site to obtain documentation updates as product fix packs are released.

Documentation installed with the product

The following documentation is available when you install the product:

README file
You are currently viewing the README file. This file is available from the root directory of the product CD-ROM and is displayed (optionally) at the end of the product installation.
Help files
The help files provide detailed instructions for completing tasks and specifying settings in the various administrative tools, including the administrative console and the Application Assembly Tool.

Access the help files by using the help menus, links, or buttons provided in the tool interfaces. In most cases, the help is context-sensitive, meaning when you ask for help, the help topic that most closely matches the current task or property sheet will be displayed. From it, you can link to other help topics.

On Windows NT, some of the above documentation is available from the Start menu as well.

Documentation on the Web

For the entire documentation set, available in all supported languages, see:

http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/infocenter.html
When you get to the Web page, either browse an InfoCenter online or download it to your machine.

In the InfoCenter, you will find the following information:

Welcome page
The Welcome page highlights information that is of special interest to all users (including transitioning from Version 3.5 to Version 4 and practical instructions for "learning by doing" through tutorials and code samples.)
Step-by-step installation documents
The installation documents offer illustrated, step-by-step help for installing and configuring the product. Each PDF document covers a different operating system and database combination, such as installing the product on Windows NT with IBM DB2 database.
In depth documentation
Topics include programming, security, administration, migration, and multiple machine environments (does not apply to Advanced Single Server Edition).
Help file updates
Updated versions of the help files installed with the product are available in the InfoCenter. The help topics for various interfaces are organized by object type (such as "Web module") under the administration section. Specifically, see article 6.6.
