You can install WebSphere Application Server by using either the Custom Installation option or the Typical Installation option. The Custom Installation option allows you to choose a supported Web server and configure WebSphere Application Server specifically for that choice. The Typical Installation option automatically installs and configures IBM HTTP Server and WebSphere Application Server.
The steps describe installation that uses a graphical user interface. WebSphere Application Server also offers silent installation. See the article Selecting steps for silent installation for more information.

The variable product_installation_root is used frequently throughout this documentation to represent the root installation directory of WebSphere Application Server. The default value of the product_installation_root variable for AIX is:
/usr/WebSphere/AppServer
