Preparing an OS/390 host environment for OLT and the IBM Distributed Debugger (Advanced Single Server)

Before tracing and debugging your OS/390 server application, you must configure the WebSphere Application Server environment to enable tracing and debugging. This section describes how you can prepare the OS/390 host environment when you have the Advanced Single Server Edition of the WebSphere Application Server installed.

Before preparing your OS/390 WebSphere Application Server environment, ensure you have the following products installed on your OS/390 system:

Also, ensure that both WebSphere Application Server and the HTTP server are down while doing the following configuration.

To configure your OS/390 WebSphere Application Server environment to trace and debug your server applications:

  1. Enable the debug JVM property.

    Refer to the WebSphere Application Server for OS/390: WebSphere Application Server Advanced Single Server Edition Planning, Installing, and Using Version 3.5 or later manual for a description of how to enable the debug JVM.

  2. Enable Object Level Trace.

    Refer to the WebSphere Application Server Advanced Single Server Edition Planning, Installing, and Using Version 3.5 or later manual for a description of how to enable Object Level Trace.

  3. Add following properties into the was.conf file which is located in the applicationserver_root/AppServer/properties/was.conf directory:
    objectleveltrace.enabled=true
    objectleveltrace.host=<HOSTNAME>
    objectleveltrace.port=2102

    where <HOSTNAME> is the workstation hostname where OLT server is running.

  4. Add the following properties in the default_global.properties file:
    appserver.product.java.jvmdebug.debug=true
    appserver.product.java.jvmdebug.port= 7777

    The second entry sets the port number that the VM would use to connect to the debugger. This is a random number.

  5. Start the HTTP server and WebSphere Application Server.
