This article describes how to install and test the operation of
IBM HTTP Server on a Solaris SPARC machine from files downloaded from the
IBM HTTP Server Download Web site at
www.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/download.html. If you are installing WebSphere Application
Server from the product CD-ROM, you do not need to follow these instructions because IBM HTTP Server is
installed by default during installation of WebSphere Application Server.
If you install IBM HTTP Server from downloaded files, it is recommended that you install
IBM HTTP Server before installing WebSphere Application Server.
The WebSphere Application Server installation process changes a Web server's configuration so that the
Web server directs certain requests (such as servlet requests) to
WebSphere Application Server. If the Web server is not installed
before WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Application Server might
function incorrectly.
These instructions assume the following:
- You do not have a previous version of IBM HTTP Server already installed on your machine.
If you do have a previous version of IBM HTTP Server installed, you must remove it
before installing the new version of IBM HTTP Server. Refer to the instructions in the product README document accessible from the
IBM HTTP Server Library Web site at
www.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/library.html.
- Your machine has enough memory and disk space for your installation.
- You have checked the WebSphere Application Server Supported Hardware, Software,
and APIs Web site at
www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/doc/latest/prereq.html to learn what level of IBM HTTP Server
you need to download.
- You have downloaded the appropriate version of IBM HTTP Server from the
IBM HTTP Server Download Web site at
www.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/download.html by following the steps given on that site.
Perform the following steps to install IBM HTTP Server from downloaded .tar or .tar.Z files:
- Ensure that you are logged into the host machine with superuser
(root) privileges.
- Move to the directory containing the downloaded files.
- Uncompress and untar any .tar or .tar.Z files to extract the IBM HTTP Server packages.
- Ensure that your DISPLAY and TERM environment variables are set properly.
- Start the Solaris admintool utility, as follows:
# admintool
- Click Browse > Software. The Software window opens.
- Click Edit > Add. The Set Source Media window opens.
- In the Set Source Media window, do the following:
- From the Software Location field's menu, click the Hard Disk option.
- In the Directory field, type the path name for the directory that
contains the IBM HTTP Server packages, and then click OK. The Add
Software window opens.
- From the Software list, select the packages that you want to install,
and then click Add. The admintool utility installs the selected
packages in the /opt/IBMHTTPD directory.
Note: Installation of some IBM HTTP Server packages requires that other packages be installed
as prerequisites. The Solaris installation tools do not automatically install prerequisites but do warn you
of them during an attempted product installation. Ensure that you install packages in the recommended order.
- After installation is complete, exit from the admintool utility.
Perform the following steps to verify that the IBM HTTP Server is
installed correctly:
- Ensure that the Web server is running or start it by entering the following command:
# /opt/IBMHTTPD/bin/apachectl start
- Open a Web browser window and type the name of the host machine as the Universal Resource Locator (URL)
(http://host_machine). If you see the Welcome to the
IBM HTTP Server page, the server has been installed
correctly.
Note that you might need to make configuration adjustments to the server
in order to run it successfully on your system. See the IBM
HTTP Web Server documentation at
www.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/library.html for more information.
To enable the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) on IBM HTTP Server, see the IBM HTTP Server documentation at
www.ibm.com/software/webservers/httpservers/doc/v1319/9atstart.htm
for more information.
If you are going to install Websphere Application Server, you must stop IBM HTTP Server.
Stopping IBM HTTP Server
Before installing WebSphere Application Server, stop IBM HTTP Server by entering the following command:
# /opt/IBMHTTPD/bin/apachectl stop
A message informs you that the server is stopped.
