Setting up and using the profile environment through commands

Use commands to create a profile, start a server, display ports, and open the administrative console.

Before you begin

This task assumes a basic familiarity with the wasprofile command, other Application Server commands, and system commands.

Before you can create and use a profile, you must install WebSphere Application Server.

About this task

Perform the following steps to create and use the profile environment.

This example deals with the profile environment of a stand-alone Application Server on the Windows platform.

Procedure

  1. Create the server profile from the original installation:

    [Linux] [HP-UX] [Solaris] [AIX] app_server_root/bin/wasprofile.sh

    [Windows] app_server_root\bin\wasprofile.bat

Assume that you create the AppSrv01 profile. The following script is an example for creating an Application Server profile on the Windows platform:
    "C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\bin\wasprofile" -create
    				-profileName AppSrv01
    				-profilePath "C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\AppSrv01"
    				-templatePath "C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profileTemplates\default"
    				-nodeName AppServerNode
    				-cellName AppServerNodeCell
    				-hostName myhost.mycity.mycompany.com
    				-isDefault false
    				-winserviceCheck true
    				-winserviceAccountType user
    				-winserviceUserName my_user_id
    				-winservicePassword my_password
    				-winserviceStartupType manual
    				-startingPort 20000

  2. [Windows] Change directories to the \bin directory of the new server profile.
For example, issue the following command:
    cd Program Files\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\AppSrv01\bin
  3. Start server1.

[Windows] Change directories to the app_server_root\bin directory of the original installation

    Issue the startServer command.
    startServer server1 -profileName AppSrv01
  4. Display all of the ports for the machine to see the ports that you set for the server process.
For example, in a Linux base shell or in the command window on a Windows platform, type:
    netstat -a
  5. Open the administrative console for server1.
The port for the administrative console is defined on the HTTP_TRANSPORT_ADMIN setting. If the value of the setting is 20003, specify the following Web address in your browser:
    http://hostname_or_IP_address:20003/ibm/console/

Results

You created an Application Server profile, started an Application Server, and accessed the administrative console through commands.

What to do next

Deploy an application.
