Use this procedure to install and customize IBM WebSphere Application
Server components on AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows operating systems.
Before you begin
Obtain the product code for distributed platforms in one of the following
ways:
- From the product disc
- From the Passport Advantage site, where licensed customers can download
installation images
- From the Trial download page on the Support site, where you can download
a packed installation file
From a customized installation package (CIP) created
with the Installation Factory
See Packaging
for information about installable
components on the product discs.
Trial downloads are available for WebSphere Application Server, Application Server Toolkit,
IBM HTTP Server, Web server plug-ins for WebSphere Application Server, and
WebSphere Application Client.
The launchpad application is available on
the product disc and on downloaded installation images. The launchpad is the recommended method of installing
components that are on the product disc. See Using the launchpad to start the installation
for more information about the launchpad.
A customized installation package does not
include the launchpad.

A
customized installation package from the Installation Factory has just one
installable component in the image:

About this task
Perform the following procedure to learn about and to create a
running version of the product components on your machine. Plan to read through
the major topics in the Welcome, Learn about, and Product overview sections
of the information center before beginning the installation.
If you
are planning to migrate from an earlier version, you can install the WebSphere
Application Server product before migrating.
See Migrating a Version 5.x managed node to a Version 6.0.x managed node
and Using the Migration wizard
.
Procedure
- Review the installation solution diagrams to help you plan a design
for your application serving topology.
Use the diagrams to identify
and select your installation path. See Planning the installation
for more information.
Before
you start installing products with the launchpad, verify that your operating
system is supported and that you have installed all of the prerequisite patches.
- Prepare your operating platform for installation.
Use
the information in Preparing the operating system for product installation
to
verify that your operating system is able to run the WebSphere Application
Server products.
After preparing your operating system, you are ready
to install the WebSphere Application Server products.
- Install your WebSphere Application Server product.
See Installing the product and additional software
for specific
installation procedures for installing a component.
See Developing and installing customized installation packages
for information about using
the Installation Factory to create and install customized installation packages
(CIPs). The rest of the steps in this procedure do not apply to installing
the product with the Installation Factory because a CIP can include maintenance
and configured profiles.
Continue to follow this procedure if you are
installing one of the components from the product package so that you install
the most current maintenance and configure the product.
After installing the Network Deployment product,
you must create a deployment manager and application servers. In Version 6,
the runtime environments for server processes are called profiles.
Installing the product code establishes the core product files on a machine.
Creating profiles creates separate runtime environments without having to
reinstall the core product files.
- Install the most current product fixes, as described in Installing maintenance packages
. The list of recommended
updates is maintained on the Support site.
- Configure the product after installation.
See Configuring the product after installation
.
Create server processes
after installation by creating profiles. Create a deployment manager first.
Then create an application server and add the node into the deployment manager
cell.
The Profile Creation wizard creates
and configures profiles.
See Creating profiles through the graphical user interface
and
the description of the wasprofile command
for more
information.
- Optional: Consider
migrating a previous installation to Version 6.x.
See Migrating product configurations
.
You can migrate the configuration and
applications from a previous installation of another version of WebSphere
Application Server. Version 6.x has a utility to help you perform the migration.
Results
You can install the WebSphere Application ServerNetwork Deployment product.
