WebSphere Application Server - Express overview
The Express product creates a stand-alone application server process during installation. You can create other stand-alone application servers using the Profile creation wizard. Each process is created in a profile, which is the set of files that define the run-time environment for the process. The files include all of the application files, configuration files, data files, and log files that the Application Server can change. Each stand-alone application server on a machine shares the same set of core product files, which do not change unless you install a refresh pack, fix pack, or interim fix to the product.
Creating multiple application servers on a single machine
You can create any number of application servers on a single machine. Although each profile is unique, with its own configuration, applications, data, logs, and administrative console, all of the servers share one set of command files and other product binary files. Changes that you make to one server profile do not affect the other servers. Configuration documents are maintained within each profile. The wasprofile command and its graphical user interface, the Profile creation wizard create the multiple stand-alone application servers.
