Overview of interoperation with WebSphere MQ

This topic provides an overview of what is involved in sending messages between a WebSphere MQ network and a WebSphere Application Server.

If you work in a WebSphere Application Server environment exchanging messages between applications across a service integration bus, you may need to connect to applications in another messaging environment, WebSphere MQ. Using the WebSphere MQ link you can exchange point-to-point messages and you can publish and subscribe between WebSphere Application Server and a WebSphere MQ network by viewing the WebSphere MQ network as a "foreign bus". To identify the a supported version of WebSphere MQ, see the Supported hardware and software Web page at http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/doc/latest/prereq.html.

The WebSphere MQ link is defined on a messaging engine in a service integration bus. It makes exchanging messages very simple by automatically converting them so their characteristics are retained or mapped to similar settings. However, there are some circumstances where the two systems work differently and you can select from the conversion options available.

In most cases messages will flow either from a: However, you can also send messages between two different:

Regardless of the route you implement, the requirements are the same: the requirements of the receiving WebSphere MQ destination must be recognized, and the message transformed to achieve a smooth transfer. This is what the WebSphere MQ link is designed for: and it operates on a destination in a service integration bus, interoperating with the WebSphere MQ network, which it views as a foreign bus. It handles both styles of messaging familiar to WebSphere MQ programmers: point-to-point and publish and subscribe.

Because you will need to know the properties of the WebSphere MQ applications that your applications will interoperate with, you should work with your counterpart -- an administrator or programmer -- in the WebSphere MQ network when designing your applications. You may wish to refer to WebSphere MQ publications available at the WebSphere MQ publications site.
