Planning to install and customize WebSphere Application Server for z/OS

Use this task to prepare to install and customize WebSphere Application Server for z/OS for the first time.

Before you begin

Print and review Steps for creating your implementation plan. Assemble a team of people to install and configure the product. Be sure that the team has the skills needed to plan, install, and configure WebSphere Application Server for z/OS. See Determining your skill needs for more information.

Why and when to perform this task

Prepare z/OS subsystems and do the other tasks in this section before you start installation, preparation, and customization. Additionally, you must determine important information about WebSphere Application Server for z/OS and z/OS subsystems before you start customization. By planning your installation and customization, you can avoid actions that may cause problems in the future.

Steps for this task

  1. Plan your topology.
To review your options for topology, see WebSphere Application Server for z/OS topology: terminology and system configuration breakdown and Choosing between a base or Network Deployment configuration.
  2. Plan your configuration.
See Planning your configuration for considerations to make during your planning phase.
  3. Prepare your z/OS environment for installation.
For more information, see Preparing the base z/OS environment.
The base z/OS environment and all of the subsystems associated with z/OS must be able to support your WebSphere Application Server installation. You need to install prerequisite products and configure z/OS subsystems, such as resource recovery services (RRS) and workload management.
In particular, be sure you have followed instructions and tips for the following:
  4. Plan for the SMP/E install of the WebSphere Application Server for z/OS product. This process involves loading the product code onto your hardware.
  5. To customize your installation of WebSphere Application Server for z/OS, use the Customization Dialog to add the settings for your environment. Before using the dialog to customize the product, you must have several decisions made about your configuration. See Preparing to customize WebSphere Application Server for z/OS for more information.
  6. If you are installing WebSphere Application Server for z/OS for the first time, consider setting up a practice runtime environment to learn the customization process.
See Installing a practice runtime on z/OS for more information.
  7. Review Installation: Resources for learning for reference information you may need to plan your network or use during installation.

What to do next

When you have finished the planning process, you are ready to begin installing the product. See Preparing the base z/OS environment.
