[Version 5.0.1 and later]Starting the Tivoli Performance Viewer

Why and when to perform this task

You can also start the Tivoli Performance Viewer with security enabled. For more information, go to the IBM Support Techdocs library (http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/Web/TechDocs), and search for the Techdoc entitled "Tivoli Performance Viewer" (TD101645).

Note: Only the Windows operating system is supported for Tivoli Performance Viewer when viewing PMI data from a z/OS host.

Steps for this task

  1. Download the utility package that contains the Tivoli Performance Viewer.
    1. This file can be found in: z/OS_WebSphere_install_directory/lib

      where:

      z/OS_WebSphere_install_directory
Is the directory where you installed z/OS WebSphere. For example, /usr/lpp/zWebSphere/V5R0M0/lib/setup.exe

    2. Download it as a binary file and execute it on your Windows machine. Only the Windows platform is supported at this time.
  2. Start the Tivoli Performance Viewer.
This can be done in two ways:
    1. Start performance monitoring from the command line.
Go to the product_installation_directory/bin directory and run the tperfviewer script.

On the z/OS platform, use the following format to specify the z/OS host, port, and connector type from the Command Prompt:

      tperfviewer.bat host_name port_number connector_type
      for example:
      tperfviewer.bat z/OS_WebSphere_Application_Server's_TCP/IP_address C:\Programs\IBWebSphereClientDevelopmentKitforzOS\bin\tperfviewer.bat z/OS_WebSphere_Application_Server's_TCP/IP_address 8879 SOAP

Connector_type can be either SOAP or RMI. The port numbers for SOAP/RMI connector can be configured in the Administrative Console under Servers > Application Servers > server_name > End Points.

If you are connecting to WebSphere Application Server, use the application server host and connector port. If additional servers have been created, then use the appropriate server port for which data is required. Tivoli Performance Viewer will only display data from one server at a time when connecting to WebSphere Application Server.

If you are connecting to WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment, use the deployment manager host and connector port. Tivoli Performance Viewer will display data from all the servers in the cell. Tivoli Performance Viewer cannot connect to an individual server in WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

8879 is the default SOAP connector port for WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

8880 is the default SOAP connector port for WebSphere Application Server.

9809 is the default RMI connector port for WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

2809 is the default RMI connector port for WebSphere Application Server.

    2. Start performance monitoring using the Windows graphical user interface.
Click Start > All Programs > IBM WebSphere Client Development Kit for z/OS > Performance Viewer.

Tivoli Performance Viewer detects which package of WebSphere Application Server you are using and connects using the default SOAP connector port.

If the connection fails, an error box is displayed. When this happens, click OK. When a new dialog box appears, change the host name to the IP address of the z/OS WebSphere Application Server, and click OK. If necessary, you can also change the port number and connector type using this dialog box.

  3. Adjust the data collection settings.
Refer to the instructions in Setting performance monitoring levels .
