Choosing between a base or Network Deployment configuration

Presented is a table that contains specifics on the differences between a WebSphere Application Server for z/OS base cell and Network Deployment cell.

  Base cell Network deployment cell
Configuration: Set up each base server node through the ISPF Customization Dialog. Set up additional servers within the node through the Administrative Console or scripting. Set up each deployment manager node through the ISPF Customization Dialog. Add base server nodes to the deployment manager cell through the ISPF Customization Dialog.
Address spaces: Min: 3 (location service daemon, controller, servant) Min: 6 (location service daemon, Application Server controller, Application Server servant, deployment manager controller, deployment manager servant, node agent)
  Max: Limited only by resources. Max: Limited only by resources.
Administrative isolation: Each base server node is a separate administrative domain. All nodes in the cell are in the same administrative domain.
Operational isolation: You may start and stop servers independently. Each server has an independent, unshared JNDI namespace. You may start and stop servers independently. The JNDI namespace is shared among all servers in the cell.
Application servers allowed to have multiple servants? Only if the Administration application is not present Yes
Clustering available? No Yes
