[5.0 only]Customizing the Enterprise options response file

This topic describes how to customize the response files for silently installing the WebSphere Application Server Enterprise product from a command line without the Installation wizard. Install as the root user on a Linux or UNIX-based platform, or as a user that belongs to the administrator group on a Windows platform. Some steps of the silent installation procedure on a Windows platform require that the administrator group user to have the advanced user rights Act as part of the operating system and Log on as a service.

Before you begin

Before using the install -options ./myoptionsfile command, for example, to invoke a silent installation, you must customize the response file to add your selections.

Why and when to perform this task

Customize the options response file precisely to enable the silent installation program to read the option values it contains. The options response file is for silent installation only. The file does not affect the default values that appear in the Installation wizard.

Steps for this task

  1. Locate the sample options response file in the operating-system platform directory on the product CD.

There are two files for Integration Server installation:

    • Use the setup.response file when installing the Enterprise product on the same machine as the base WebSphere Application Server product, whether or not you perform an umbrella installation to install the base product.
    • Use the setup_nd.response file when installing the Enterprise product on the same machine with the Network Deployment product.
    • Use both files if you instal the Enterprise product on a machine that already has both the base product and the Network Deployment product. Use the files as you install the Enterprise product twice, once to install the extensions that work with the base product, and once to install the administrative extensions for the Network Deployment product.
Each options response file is located in the operating-system platform directory on the product CD-ROM.

  2. Copy an options response file to customize it. For example, copy the setup_nd.response file on the product CD as myoptionsfile on your disk drive. Customize the options to define how to extend the Network Deployment product.
  3. Edit the copy of the file in your flat file editor of choice, on the target operating system. Read the directions within the response file to choose appropriate values.
Prepare for a silent installation on an AIX platform by using UNIX line-end characters (0x0D0A) to terminate each line of the options response file, as described in Platform-specific tips for installing and migrating.
  4. Search for and ensure that the -silent option is present, to have a silent installation.

This option is present in the file as it ships from IBM. Without this option, the file has no use. The options response file is for silent installation only. The file does not affect the default values that appear in the Installation wizard.

  5. Include custom option responses that reflect parameters for your system.

Read the directions within the response file to choose appropriate values.

  6. Save the file.

Results

You can customize the response file to prepare for running a silent installation.

Example

Edit the version of each file that ships with the Enterprise product. The following examples show a few lines from each file.

Use the setup.response file with the base WebSphere Application Server product

# **************************************************************************
# Response file for installing WebSphere Application Server Enterprise v5.1
# on an existing WebSphere Application Server v5.1 or in a new location.
# **************************************************************************

# Note: For installing WebSphere Application Server Enterprise v5.1
# on an existing WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment v5.1
# please use the file setup_nd.response

#  ====================================================================
# Please follow the comments to use the response file and understand
# the various options. You must carefully complete or change the various
# values. If the values are not completed properly, the install may be
# unsuccessful.
#
#
# IMPORTANT: ALL VALUES MUST BE ENCLOSED IN DOUBLE QUOTES ( "" ).
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------

# Install Option:
#
# Please specify whether you want to install WebSphere Application Server
# Enterprise v5.1 on an existing WebSphere Application Server v5.1 or you

# If you selected -W pmeInstallLocation.installOption="NEWLOCATION"
# specify the destination directory for the WebSphere Application

# You will need to change this for UNIX platforms. As an example for
# AIX, the value may be "/usr/WebSphere/AppServer"
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------

-P EEX_WASPME.installLocation="C:\Program Files\WebSphere\AppServer"

Use the setup_nd.response file with the Network Deployment product
