Installing WebSphere Application Server for z/OS and OS/390 into separate System Modification Program Extended (SMP/E) zones from z/OS or OS/390
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Install IBM® WebSphere® Application Server versions into separate SMP/E zones from your z/OS® or OS/390® zones. Otherwise, you lose your Application Server environment the next time you upgrade your z/OS or OS/390 environment.

Resolving the problem
Some of the obsolete versions of WebSphere Application Server shipped as part of various OS/390 releases and were within the SMP/E environment for OS/390. This environment includes the target zone, distribution zone, and Hierarchical File System (HFS) data sets for OS/390. However, current versions of the Application Server do not ship with z/OS or OS/390.

Avoid putting the Application Server into the same SMP/E zones as z/OS or OS/390. If you put your Application Server in your z/OS or OS/390 SMP/E zones, you lose your Application Server SMP/E environment the next time you upgrade your z/OS or OS/390 environments. You will have to do a complete reinstallation of the Application Server.
