Error description
Customer uses client digital certificates.
During a day when workload was 30% higher than previous peak,
the servant suddenly received multiple S878-0C ABENDs in RACF
and then ended.
Analysis of the dump shows hundreds of CPOOL extents for this
CPOOL: "SCBBO 2 Page PC Cpool"
Each of these CPOOL extents have damaged free chains. There
is usually one but sometimes two or three allocated elements,
but the free chain pointer at the beginning of the next element
has been zeroed out. When the next CPOOL element is requested
the head of the free chain is set to zero. On the next
request for a CPOOL element, a new segment will be obtained.
VSMDATA will show hundreds of Subpool 249 Key 2 blocks
that are C9000 bytes long. The beginning of each block will
contain "SCBBO 2 Page PC Cpool". For all CPOOL extents except
the first, the cells start 0x18 bytes into the area, and they
are 0x2000 bytes long. The free chain pointer is at offset 0 in
each cell.

****************************************************************
The abends occured due to a lack of storage in subpool 249, key
2. The storage failures were caused by a storage overlay by the
BBOSSITU dynamic area of the CPOOL chain pointers, causing the
CPOOL code to think it needed to obtain storage instead of
using entries in the current CPOOL. A compiler option used to
catch errors of this kind did not work because an entry linkage
macro used part of the module dynamic area and this extra space
used was not accounted for in the compiler option.
Problem conclusion
The compiler option in the affected modules was changed to
account for the entry linkage space in order to prevent future
updates from causing the module dynamic area to overlay the
CPOOL structure.
