Using SPM Service classification qualifier for WebSphere Application Server z/OS servers
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
SPM service classification qualifier is not effective for IBM® WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® controller regions. The system does not treat them as SYSSTC tasks because these started task JCL Procedures contain multiple job steps.

Cause
WLM's SPM qualifier does not apply to WebSphere controller regions because they occur in multiple step started task JCL procedures. Multi-step started task JCL procedures are not considered privileged.

Resolving the problem
The SPM qualifier classifies a job if the job is listed as priviledged in the PPT or listed as a system task in the SCHEDxx parmlib member.

The Application Server daemon and control regions are entered into the SCHEDxx parmlib member during installation, but the controller regions are not treated as priviledged because but they are multi-step jobs.

IEF188I PROBLEM PROGRAM ATTRIBUTES ASSIGNED

Message is issued during controller region startup. The message indicates that the controller region jobs are not considered priviledged. Consequently controller regions will not be classified according to the SPM qualifier.

The WebSphere Application Server for z/OS Information Center documents how to permit controller regions to be priviledged. This can be accomplished by removing the postinstaller job step from controller region started task JCL procedures. Once this is done, then the postinstaller must be invoked whenever WebSphere maintenance is applied. The article describes the procedure for doing this.
