BBO0036E and BBOS0052E received starting WebSphere Application Server with SSL active
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
You are trying to start WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® with SSL but receive the following error messages:
BBOO0036E FUNCTION gsk_environment_init FAILED WITH RC=3.
BBOO0036E FUNCTION gsk_environment_init FAILED WITH RC=3.
BBOS0052E SSL security was specified but could not be initialized.
BBOS0120I CSIv2 z/OS GSSUP security has been configured but 962 will not be used because SSL services are not available.

Cause
You are using a userid that does not have a valid HOME directory.

Resolving the problem
You can resolve the problem by changing the HOME directory for the userid from /TMP, in upper-case, to /tmp in lower case.
Note: If you are running on a z/OS 1.3, System SSL makes a call to see if there is a kdb file in the HFS. If the WebSphere Application Server userid for the server has an invalid HOME directory, this error is issued. The SSL trace shows the failure occurring on a call to getcwd().for a KEYFILE.

If you are running on z/OS 1.4 and above, you do not need a HOME if you are using an SSL KEYRING.
