Permission denied error encountered when trying to install WebSphere Application Server on a Linux for zSeries file system
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
When you attempt to install WebSphere® Application Server, the installation image might be transferred to a Linux® for zSeries® file system. When the install program is started using the ./install or ./launchpad.sh command, a "Permission denied" error occurs.

If you use the ls -l command to verify the permission settings of either or both of these commands, the system responds that the execute permission is enabled.

Cause
It is possible to allow non-root users to mount a file system. You can enable this capability by using the user option in the file system table (fstab). However, when a non-root user mounts the file system, the operating system automatically associates the noexec option with the file system, which makes all files non-executable. You can verify this result using the mount command and check whether the file system was mounted by a non-root user. If a non-root user mounts a file system, the operating system shows noexec as one of the attributes for this file system.

Resolving the problem
The root user should unmount the file system and remount the file system so that the noexec attribute is not present.
