Problem(Abstract)
Running WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS® V5.1 Installation Verification Test (IVT), the following failure occurred with the following error messages appearing in the log files:

WSVR0501E: Error creating component null
Ýclass com.ibm.ws.runtime.component.
ApplicationServerImpl¨
com.ibm.ws.exception.RuntimeWarning
and
CNTR0019E: Non-application exception occurred while
processing method "create". Exception data:
java.lang.NullPointerException

Cause
Initially, APAR PQ93139 (com.ibm.ws.recoverylog.spi.InternalLogException causes application server not to start), looked like a possibility, but the local fix did not help. It was determined that a group of Unix System Services (USS) BPXPRMxx parameters were commented out in error.
 
Resolving the problem
After enabling the following parameters in your BPXPRMxx file as shown below, deleting the current recovery log1 file, and IPLing the system, the problem was resolved.
