Turning on tracing without editing your server.xml file
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
This is an alternate method if you cannot use your administrative console to turn on Java™ tracing, or you do not want to edit your server.xml file. Using the administrative console is the preferred method to turn on tracing when running WebSphere® Application Server for z/OS®.

Resolving the problem

If the Administrative Console cannot be used to turn on tracing, you can run the wsadmin.sh scripting tool. The example provided below uses the config directory /WebSphere/V5R0M0/AppServer/bin. You might have renamed this directory, which is acceptable.

  1. To invoke the wsadmin tool, go to this directory: /WebSphere/V5R0M0/AppServer/bin and issue:

    wsadmin.sh

    You should see the response:

    WASX7209I: Connected to process "server1" on node SY1 using SOAP connector; The type of process is: UnManagedProcess
    WASX7029I: For help, enter: "$Help help"
  2. Identify the server for which you want to set the tracing:

    set server [$AdminConfig getid /Cell:mycell/Node:mynode/Server:myserver/]
    ex: set server [$AdminConfig getid /Cell:SY1/Node:SY1/Server:server1/]

    You should see the response:

    server1(cells/SY1/nodes/SY1/servers/server1:server.xml#Server_1)
  3. Identify the trace service belonging to the server:

    set tc [$AdminConfig list TraceService $server]

    You should see the response:

    (cells/SY1/nodes/SY1/servers/server1:server.xml#TraceService_1)
  4. Set the trace string:

    $AdminConfig modify $tc {{startupTraceSpecification *=all=enabled}}
    ex $AdminConfig modify $tc {{startupTraceSpecification com.ibm.ws.management.*=all=disabled:}}

    - all in one line:

    $AdminConfig modify $tc {{startupTraceSpecification com.ibm.websphere.management.*=all=enabled:com.ibm.ws.
    management.*=all=enabled:com.ibm.ws.runtime.*=all=enabled}}
  5. Save the changes.

    $AdminConfig save

    Note: After this step, server.xml file is updated.
