PQ92267: INCREASED CPU USAGE MIGRATING FROM V4 TO V5 WITH WEBSPHERE APPLICATION SERVER FOR Z/OS V5

Error description
Customers may experience an increase in CPU utilization in
WebSphere Application Server for z/OS v5. This increase may
be caused by automatic reload. Reload is set in in the
ibm-web-ext.xmi file. WebSphere Studio Applicaton Developer
v5 enables reload in this file by default.
Local fix
There are two methods of providing relief for this
problem: First, at the admin console, click on Applications -
Enterprise Applications, and for each application installed,
check the 'Reload Enabled' checkbox, and set the 'Reload
Enabled' value to 0, and save/sync the changes.
Alternatively,
manually edit the ibm-web-ext.xmi file and set
reloadInterval="0" and reloadingEnabled="true"

WebSphere Application Server for z/OS has excessive CPU
utilization during server idle time when customer migrated from
version 4.0 to 5.0. In version 4.0 application class reload was
disabled so the class reload settings in the application were
ignored. In version 5.0 application class reload was enabled and
because the default settings for Web Applications is set to
enabled, server class reload started to check for changed
classes in the installed Web Application on the server. The
default interval for the changed class check in Web Applications
is 3 seconds.
Problem conclusion
WebSphere class loading function was updated to use WebSphere
Alarms instead of Java Timers. Doing this will allow class
reload to be switched to a mode in which it will only run at
the end of request processing in the server. So, if there are
not any requests being processed by the server then the class
reload function will not be running. To enable this function
requires Alarm Manager quiet mode be activated. Documentation
for setting Alarm Manager to quiet mode can be found in the
WebSphere Information Center by searching for 'Alarm Manager to
quiet mode' or com.ibm.ejs.am.mode.workbased
