APAR status
Closed as program error.

Error description
The PostInstaller did not handle properly the error situations
where the service-level.property file was missing. The error
cases could be when the product HFS was not available
(unmounted), or when the root was mounted with the wrong
permissions, etc...

* USERS AFFECTED: All users of WebSphere Application Server *
*                 V6.1 for z/OS with a IBM WebSphere product   *
*                 installed (i.e. a stack product or           *
*                 feature pack).                               *
****************************************************************
* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: When a disk device that contains the *
*                      SMP/E installation root of a WebSphere  *
* stack product or feature pack is *
* inadvertently not mounted and the *
* server is restarted after applying a *
* new service level to any installed *
*                      WebSphere products, the post-installer  *
* will incorrectly delete any symbolic *
* links pointing from the *
*                      WAS_HOME/properties/version             *
*                      directory to the unmounted SMP/E        *
*                      installation root.                      *
****************************************************************
* RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
****************************************************************
When a disk device that contains the SMP/E installation root
of a WebSphere stack product or feature pack is inadverteantly
not mounted and the server is restarted after applying a new
service level to any installed WebSphere products, the
post-installer will delete any symbolic links pointing from
the WAS_HOME/properties/version directory to the unmounted
SMP/E installation root.

If a feature pack is installed, even after re-mounting the
missing SMP/E installation root, the post-installer will fail
with an exception such as:

BUILD FAILED
/WebSphere/V6R1/AppServer/properties/service/product/FPWS
/service/actions/level-check.xml:31: Warning: Could not find
file /WebSphere/V6R1/AppServer/properties/version/
WEBSERVICES.product to copy.

Total time: 20 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------
Returned from the Multi-Product PTF Installer, Return code: 1
-----------------------------------------------------------

In addition and if a stack product is installed (such as
WebSphere XD), the missing files can also cause informational
data to not be displayable in the WebSphere Adminstrative
Console, such which product and component and levels are
installed.
Problem conclusion
Change post-installer processing to no longer delete "dead"
symbolic links from the WAS_HOME/properties/version
directory. This will prevent the post-installer from
corrupting valid symbolic links.

APAR PK61721 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
Level (Fix Pack) 6.1.0.18 of WebSphere Application Server V6.1
