Question
Is DB2 V7 required for WebSphere Application Server Version 5.0? The documentation states that it is an optional software requirement.

Answer
WebSphere Application Server Version 5.0 does not require DB2 for its Runtime data like WebSphere Application Server V4. In Version 5.0 the runtime configuration data is stored in an HFS. However, if customer applications need to access DB2 via JDBC or persist the HTTP session objects into DB2, then DB2 V7 is required because Version 5.0 implements J2EE spec level 1.3. The J2EE 1.3 spec requires JDBC 2.0 spec level. The only IBM DB2 JDBC driver that implements JDBC 2.0 spec level is DB2 V7. DB2 V6 is at a lower spec level than JDBC 2.0 and is not compatible with J2EE 1.3
Your application can use any JDBC 2.0 compliant provider. Any configuration needed for DB2 or any other JDBC provider will be documented with that product.
