Long directories do not fit on one line in Unix System Services
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
After assembling and deploying EAR files, directory structures might not fit on one line in OpenEdition® Unix® System Services. They might also contain space and/or underscores, which are characters that do not always parse properly with the OS/390® Unix System Services.

Resolving the problem

Underscores
When using the ISHELL in Unix System Services(USS), a directory path containing an underscore at the end of the first line is not properly interpreted.

For example, if the following path is entered in ISHELL, it results in a failure to find the path and brings up a new directory/file screen. The ISHELL does not parse the name properly and prompts you to create a new directory or file:
/WebSphere390/WSTCFG/apps/WSTTUF/TUF 1_5_0 Beta
4/The_Universal_Framework_APPLICATION.war

To circumvent this, change replace underscores in the directory path with some other character, (such as a hyphen), or temporarily modify the directory name so that an underscore does not fall at the end of the line.

Spaces
When using OMVS, USS is unable to correctly parse the a directory path that contains spaces in the directory name.

For example, if you enter the following directory path with spaces:

# cd /WebSphere390/WSTCFG/apps/WSTTUF/TUF 1_5_0 Beta 4/

You will get the following error:

cd: Usage: cd ¦dir¿
cd old new

To correct this error, change the spaces in the directory path to some other character, such as a hyphen ( - ).

Solution:
  1. Do not use leading or trailing blanks and underscores on any of the entry lines in USS. A leading or trailing quotation mark ( ' ) is ignored. Therefore, you can use a quotation mark to delimit names or parts of names ending with an underscore or single quotation mark.

  2. End the pathname with a blank entry line.

  3. If no pathname is specified, the working directory is assumed.

  4. Blanks are considered special characters. You can put the entire directory name in single quotations marks (or double quotation marks, if there are single quotation marks in the name), to make USS treat the name as a single entity.
