PQ74668: Slow startup of J2EE client due to overhead of WCCM

 A fix is available

5.0.2: WebSphere Application Server Version 5.0 Fix Pack 2 (Version 5.0.2)

APAR status
Closed as program error.

Error description
The Websphere 5.0 J2EE launchClient adds a considerable
amount of startup-time to the execution of a J2EE java client.
A significant amount of this time is consumed by the continual
expansion of the EAR file. Both Version 4 and 5 exhibit this
problem to the point that the launchClient is basically
unusable. At a minimum, the launchClient should be able to
take a parameter that inhibits the expansion of the EAR file
and a parameter that provide the location (cached) of the
expanded EAR (or only expands it if the "cached" content
is out-of-date.

* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The modeling framework of WCCM has a *
* large memory footprint which causes *
* an impact to performance. *
****************************************************************
* RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
****************************************************************
Slow performance was observed when using WCCM. For example,
Java Clients using LaunchClient incurred a delay at startup due
to the number of objects that had to be initialized.
Problem conclusion
A new open source modeling framework called EMF (Eclipse
Modeling Framework) is used by next generation WCCM to
decrease the memory footprint and initialization time.
Performance improvement varies depending on number of model
packages initialized.
