WebSphere Application Server V5.0.2 throw the FileNotFoundException during the DataSource “Test Connection”
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
FileNotFoundException occurs in WebSphere® Application Server v5.0.2 when you perform the "Test Connection".

Cause
This occurs when the server creation process fails to the variables.xml file in the install_root/.../config directory.

Failure scenario:

  1. Create an Application Server using the V5.0 administrative console.

The variables.xml will not be created in
    install_root/config/cells/my_cell/my_node/servers/new_app_server

  2. Apply refresh pack 2 to upgrade WebSphere Application Server to V5.0.2.

The variables.xml is still not created.

  3. Create the Data Source.

  4. Run Test Connection from the V5.0.2 administrative console.

A FileNotFoundException exception is thrown due to missing variables.xml in the config directory.

Resolving the problem
Copy install_root/config/templates/default/nodes/servers/server1/variable.xml into the config directory for the Application Server.
