Root or administrator authority is required for installation of fix packs, interim fixes or cumulative fixes as well as to perform migration and v6.0 profile creation
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Installation of fix packs, interim fixes or cumulative fixes fail, or are incomplete, unless they are performed by actual root user on UNIX® platforms or performed by a user with administrative privileges on Windows® platforms. Use this same user authority when unpacking the files prior to installation.

Cause
The installation instructions in the WebSphere® Application Server Information Centers all contain a statement similar to the following:
Install this product as root on a Linux® or UNIX-based operating system, or from a user ID that is part of the Administrator group on a Windows platform. If you create a CD-ROM copy of the product CD-ROM, create it as root.

The same statement applies to the installation of fix packs, interim fixes and cumulative fixes to WebSphere Application Server after the initial installation is performed. The same level of authority is also required to perform a migration from one version of WebSphere Application Server to another. Profile creation within WebSphere Application Server v6.0 requires actual root or administrative privileges as well.

Systems where the user has been changed to a non-root ID, sudo-root, or a non-administrative ID for daily operation must change the user, along with file ownership, back to comply with the preceding statement before installing fix packs, interim fixes or cumulative fixes to WebSphere Application Server.

Alternatively, you can install WebSphere Application Server full installation, fix packs, interim fixes or cumulative fix packs as actual root or administrator user first, before switching to a non-root user.

Resolving the problem
Install WebSphere Application Server, fix packs, interim fixes and cumulative fixes with an actual root user ID on UNIX systems and a user ID that is part of the Administrator group on a Windows platform.
