Applying maintenance to WebSphere® Application Server V5 embedded messaging
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
This technote explains how to apply maintenance, in the form of WebSphere MQ Corrective Service Discs (CSDs), to the MQ environment that is being used by WebSphere Application Server. It also explains when it is appropriate to use CSDs instead of WebSphere Application Server fix packs.

Cause
All releases of WebSphere Application Server V5, including Base, Network Deployment (ND) and Enterprise Editions, can be configured in several different ways to communicate with the full WebSphere MQ or WebSphere Application Server embedded messaging:

Solution
Only WebSphere MQ is installed; no embedded messaging

In cases where only WebSphere MQ is installed and the embedded messaging feature is not installed, WebSphere MQ is updated using CSDs. The MQ CSDs must be installed separately from WebSphere Application Server fix packs. The CSDs can be obtained at the WebSphere MQ support site.

Important: When a WebSphere Application Server fix pack is installed, it is important to clear the embedded messaging / WebSphere MQ update options during the fix pack installation. Do not allow the WebSphere Application Server fix pack to update the WebSphere MQ product.

Only embedded messaging is installed; no WebSphere MQ product

In cases where WebSphere embedded messaging is installed and the full WebSphere MQ product is not installed, embedded messaging is updated using WebSphere Application Server fix packs. Do not apply the WebSphere MQ CSDs to the embedded messaging feature because this could potentially cause problems. During the fix pack installation, select the embedded messaging update option to upgrade the embedded messaging maintenance level.

The following table shows the WebSphere MQ CSD level that is installed for embedded messaging when a WebSphere Application Server fix pack is installed.

WebSphere Application Server version
Minimum MQ CSD level
5.0.0 no fix pack
MQ 5.3 CSD 1
5.0.1 fix pack 1
MQ 5.3 CSD 3
5.0.2.x fix pack 2 + any cumulative fix for 5.0.2
MQ 5.3 CSD 4
5.1.0.x no fix pack + any cumulative fix for 5.1.0
MQ 5.3 CSD 4
5.1.1.x fix pack 1 + any cumulative fix for 5.1.1
MQ 5.3 CSD 7

For WebSphere Application Server levels below 5.1.1, there are interim fixes for embedded messaging that resolve common problems that are fixed in later MQ CSD levels. To take advantage of these fixes, download and install the WebSphere embedded messaging interim fixes for WebSphere Application Server.

Note that these fixes are applied to the embedded messaging feature using a manual installation process. See the readme associated with the interim fix for installation details.

Both WebSphere MQ product and embedded messaging are installed

In cases where the full WebSphere MQ product and WebSphere embedded messaging are both installed, you must install both the full MQ CSD and WebSphere Application Server fix pack. The MQ CSD upgrades the MQ maintenance level, and the WebSphere Application Server fix pack upgrades the Embedded JMS Broker that is part of the embedded messaging feature, based on the WebSphere MQ Event Broker product.

Important: The CSD that is installed must be equal to or greater than the CSD level installed by the WebSphere Application Server fix pack. Refer to the table in the section above for the minimum CSD requirements.

First, install the MQ CSD. After the MQ CSD is successfully installed, install the WebSphere Application Server fix pack. The WebSphere Application Server fix pack update detects that the CSD has been installed and updates only the Embedded JMS Broker component. The Embedded JMS Broker is based on the WebSphere MQ Event Broker product, and therefore requires the separate update from the WebSphere Application Server fix pack.
