WSVR0009E: Error occurred during startup <malformed parameter> seen starting application server
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Attempting to start an application server. The startserver.log shows:
ADMU3011E: Server launched but failed initialization. Server log files should contain failure information.

Systemout.log is not being generated.

Native_stdout.log shows:
WSVR0009E: Error occurred during startup
<malformed parameter>

Cause
Executing startnode -trace produced a startserver.log that shows:
ProcessLaunch < setCreationParams
[executable:] /usr/java131//bin/java [command line args:] ...

This shows that the wrong Java™ is being used. It should be using the Java that comes with WebSphere® Application Server.

The JAVA_HOME setting in variable.xml is set incorrectly.

Resolving the problem
To resolve the problem you need to change the files in the dmgr.

1. Edit <DeploymentManager-Install-Root>/config/cells/<cellname>/nodes/
<nodename>/ variables.xml.

2. Change from
symbolicName="JAVA_HOME" value="/usr/java131/"
to
symbolicName="JAVA_HOME" value="${WAS_INSTALL_ROOT}/java"

3. Issue syncNode.sh <DMGR_HOST> <DMGR_SOAP_PORT>

4. Startnode should now work.

Note: If this is not a ND configuration then just modify the variable.xml on
the application server and do not issue syncNode.
