Limitations with the embedded WebSphere JMS provider in WebSphere Application Server 5.0
 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
Can the embedded JMS provider that is included with WebSphere® Application Server 5.0 be used for messaging into or out of the WebSphere environment?

Solution
The embedded JMS provider is a scaled-down version of WebSphere MQ 5.3 and is installed with WebSphere 5.0. It is meant to be used only internally by applications running on WebSphere Application Server. Messaging into or out of the WebSphere environment is not supported and is a violation of the WebSphere Application Server license agreement.. The full WebSphere MQ product is needed for messaging that is external to WebSphere..

Messaging external to the WebSphere environment includes:

  • Application clients running on machines that are remote to WebSphere
  • WebSphere applications on remote machines
  • Any application not running within WebSphere

These applications cannot use the embedded JMS provider. Messaging that is internal to WebSphere, and is supported with embedded messaging, includes:
  • Applications running in WebSphere
  • Application clients on the same machine as WebSphere

A WebSphere node within the same administrative domain as the node on which embedded messaging is installed can also use the embedded JMS provider. This is possible by federating both nodes to the same cell using WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

The full WebSphere MQ 5.3 CSD 1, or higher, can run on the same machine as WebSphere Application Server's embedded JMS provider; however, earlier versions of WebSphere MQ cannot coexist with the embedded provider.

It is important that WebSphere MQ is installed before WebSphere is installed when MQ and embedded messaging coexist. Also, only WebSphere MQ 5.3 CSD 1 or later versions are supported for use with WebSphere Application Server version 5.0.
