Problem(Abstract) |
The WebSphere® Application Server installation program and
update installer utility permit the user to start them using the
undocumented -console option. This option is not supported by the
WebSphere Application Server installer or updateInstaller programs. The
installer process can hang or issue an error when this option is
used. |
|
|
|
Cause |
The -console option is an InstallShield for
Multi-Platforms (ISMP) option that is not supported by WebSphere
Application Server installation; however, some users familiar with
ISMP-based installation programs might attempt to use it. Additionally,
the update installer might throw error messages which suggest using the
-console option when encountering X-windows display issues.
The -console option should not be used to correct display
issues. |

|
Resolving the
problem |
Do not use the -console option when invoking the
WebSphere Application Server V5.0, V5.1, V6.0, or V6.1 installation or
update installer programs. It is an undocumented and unsupported option.
If it is necessary to install WebSphere Application Server products at a
console (also called a silent installation), refer to the WebSphere
Application Server Information Center documentation on Silent
Installation.
A custom response file is necessary to install silently. The product
installer provides sample response files which can be edited for silent
installations, and the Information Center documentation shows examples of
how to write response files for the update installer utility. |
