java.lang.NullPointerException occurs when the sendMessage method is invoked from the application using any fix level of WebSphere Application Server V5.0.2 with Embedded Messaging
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
This problem can be caused by a missing 'runmqlsr' process for the Embedded Messaging Queue Manager.

Cause
When listing the processes running, runmqlsr for the running Queue Manager did not appear in the list of processes.

The ps -ef|grep lsr command should show something similar to the following:

root 22308 1 0 Jan 09 - 0:00 runmqlsr -t tcp -p 5568 -m WAS_NodeName_server1

On Windows® systems, the runmqlsr.exe process should show up in the Task Manager.

In the error scenario, this process was not listed.

Resolving the problem
To resolve this problem, the runmqlsr process must be started. This is done by running the deletemq.sh and createmq.sh scripts. The instructions below apply in a non-federated environment.
  1. Stop the application server, for example server1.

  2. Issue a dspmq command to verify that the Queue Manager is stopped:

    $ dspmq
    QMNAME(WAS_NodeName_server1) STATUS(Ended immediately)

  3. Invoke the deletemq.sh script:

    $ deletemq.sh <cell_name> <node_name> <server_name>

  4. Invoke the createmq.sh script:

    $ createmq.sh Install_Root <cell_name> <node_name> <server_name>

  5. Start the application server, for example server1.

  6. Check to see that the runmqlsr is running:

    $ ps -ef|grep lsr

    This should show the process is active.

  7. Test the application.

The sendMessage should now complete successfully.
