Applying V5.0 Fix Pack 1 to a plug-in-only installation on a remote Web server, fails with no error message or an invalid directory error
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
When applying the WebSphere® Application Server V5.0 Fix Pack 1 to a plug-in-only installation on a remote Web server, the fix pack installation fails. The update installer wizard indicates that the product is not installed, or that a product directory is specified that is not valid. The updateSilent utility then quits without taking any action.

Cause
During a plug-in-only installation, the WebSphere Application Server V5.0 installation program does not install files to the $WAS_HOME/properties/version/dtd directory. When these files are absent, the update installer version bundled with Fix Pack 1 does not recognize the WebSphere Application Server V5.0 installation as valid.

Problem Symptoms
  • Wizard Update
The second panel of the wizard asks for the product installation directory, and as a convenience, it indicates the directory in which it thinks the product is installed; however, even when you specify the correct installation directory, the wizard responds with the following message:

Not a valid product installation directory.

  • Silent Update
The silent update installer starts, lists some standard start-up messages, then stops without performing any action. No log files are written and the output looks similar to the following:

    Start of [ updateSilent.bat ]

    Verifying installer jar:
     [ installer.jar ]

    Set encoding: console

Resolving the problem
This issue is resolved in later versions of the update installer utility.
  1. Download the latest version of the update installer.

  2. Extract the content of the update installer to the same location that contains Fix Pack 1.

  3. Overwrite the existing update installer files in that location with the newer versions.
