SuSE SLES 8.0 kernel compilation fails when applying the loopback patch
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
SuSE Linux® Enterprise Server 8.0 kernel (2.4.19-x) compilation fails at "make bzImage" when you apply the loopback patch (hidden-2.4.19-xxxx.diff).

Resolving the problem
You can obtain the correct loopback patch for your kernel version from the following Web site:

http://www.ssi.bg/~ja/#hidden

To apply the loopback patch, follow the instructions provided on the previous Web site.

Instructions on how to compile the kernel after applying the loopback patch are located at the following Web site:
http://tldp.org/docs.html#howto

When you compile the kernel, use the default configuration file, which is located in the /usr/src/linux/arch/xxxx/defconfig directory where xxxx represents the system architecture (for example: i386, ia64, ppc64). The default configuration file that is packaged under the kernel source might not be appropriate for the system. Use the installed kernel configuration file with the following description:

# cd /usr/src/linux
# zcat /proc/config.gz .config
# make oldconfig
