When does an application server listen to HTTP or HTTPS ports?

Abstract
If an application server or cluster member Web container is empty, or has nothing to offer, then WebSphere® Application Server V5.0 (all releases) will not listen on the corresponding HTTP or HTTPS transport ports.

In the following cases you will not see the message,

SRVE0171I: Transport http is listening on port xxxx

even if the application server is in a running state.
Case 1:
No Enterprise application installed in an Application Server or cluster member.

Case 2:
Enterprise application is installed, but there are no Web modules (only enterprise beans)

Case 3:
Enterprise application (with Web modules) is installed, but it is not started or running.


Example 1: SystemOut.log of an Application Server which has Web modules to offer.

Notice in Example 2, that when your Application Server has no Web modules to offer, your SystemOut.log file is missing the following line:
