Getting background information on PMI
  • What is Performance Monitoring Infrastructure (PMI)?
WebSphere® Application Server collects performance data on runtime and applications through the PMI. The performance data is stored in memory.

There are several types of interfaces that can be used to access performance data. Tools that use these interfaces help you to monitor and tune the performance of your WebSphere Application Server environment.

Performance data can be monitored and analyzed with these tools:
    1. The Tivoli® Performance Viewer (known as the Resource Analyzer in version 4.0), which is included in WebSphere Application Server
    2. Other Tivoli monitoring tools
    3. User-developed monitoring tools
    4. Third-party monitoring tools

The Tivoli Performance Viewer is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) performance monitor. In version 5, it runs as a stand-alone GUI and in version 6, it is integrated into the Administrative Console. The Tivoli Performance Viewer can be used to connect to local or remote hosts.

  • PMI request metrics
WebSphere Application Server also collects data by timing requests as they travel through the product components. PMI Request Metrics is a tool that allows you to track individual transactions, recording the processing time in each of the major WebSphere Application Server components, such as the Web Server, Web Container, EJB Container, and the database. These data points are recorded in logs and can be written to Application Response Monitoring agents used by Tivoli tools or third-party monitoring tools.
