Error description
This problem occurs on all current WebSphere Application Server
versions (not just 5.02 as stated in the instructions below)
on Windows only.
.
Steps to reproduce
this WebSphere crash, you must have a WAS 5.0.2 on Windows
(XP, Windows 2000, Windows 2003: behaviour is the same).
Follow these steps:
  1. Start WAS
  2. Using WAS Admin Console, on "server1", set Process
Definition

<was
install path>/bin/startServer.bat server1
  6. The output of startServer.bat is "Server server1 open for
e-business; process id is 1180", but WebSphere process is
nowhere, it
      just crashed!
  7. Type in the same DOS Command windows: set Path1=
  8. Start WebSphere, using in the same DOS Command windows:
<was
install path>/bin/startServer.bat server1

Local fix
Local Workaround is to include "set Path1=" in the
startServer.bat script. This occurs with Path2 or Path1FooBar,
actually we understood that the bug occurs for any Path*XYW...
variable, if * is an character having ASCII code under "="
(equal sign).
