Installing WebSphere Application Server V5.0 Fix Pack 1 on Windows prevents the Application Server service from starting; reports Error 193
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
After successfully installing WebSphere® Application Server V5.0 Fix Pack 1, you attempt to start the service, IBM WebSphere Application Server V5, server1. Microsoft® Windows® might return either of these messages: "Error 193: ... is not a valid Win32 application", or "Could not start the ... service on Local Computer Error 193: 0xc1".

Cause
During the installation of Fix Pack 1, a file called Program is erroneously generated in the root directory of the drive containing the Program Files folder. The presence of this file prevents the WebSphere Application Server service from starting.

Resolving the problem
Delete or rename the C:\Program file (this assumes that C: is the drive containing the Program Files folder). Once removed or renamed, you can start the WebSphere Application Server service.
This is a known WebSphere Application Server issue, and Fix Pack 2 does not generate the C:\Program file.
