Java Core Dump During Fix Pack 1 Install on WebSphere Application Server V5.0 Base
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Fix pack 1 for WebSphere Application Server V5.0 Base produces a Java core dump during installation on MontaVista Linux.

Cause
In this case a customer had done a root install of WebSphere Application Server V5.0 base on MontaVista Linux, but for some reason, the $WAS_HOME/java directory isn't owned by user root and group root. It turned out to be owned by some other user. When they tried to install Fix Pack 1, it caused a Java core dump after about 80 tasks.

Resolving the problem
Reassign the ownership of $WAS_HOME/java directory to root, root. After that Fix Pack 1 can be installed successfully.

To prevent this from happening in the future, use the CD image for installing.
