PQ73896: Superceded fixes cannot be used to satisfy corequisites

 A fix is available

5.0.2: WebSphere Application Server Version 5.0 Fix Pack 2 (Version 5.0.2)

APAR status
Closed as program error.

Error description
For WebSphere cumulative fixes, there is currently no
mechanism for applying updates that have corequisites that
have since been superceded.
For instance....
WebSphere_Engine_Cumulative_Fix dated February 14th requires a
Session fix that was created on February 10th.
A month later, the Sessions team releases a newer cumulative
fix (March 3rd) that supercedes the February 10th fix.
Per the APAR and cumulative process, the older fix is removed
the site and superceded by the newer fix.
The problem occurs when customer encounters an Engine issue
that is resolved by the February 14th cumulative.
To be able to apply this fix, customer is required to apply
the Sessions cumulative fix dated February 10th
(which is no longer available). The installer will fail if
you have applied the later Session cumulative
fix (March 3rd) that supercedes the February 10th fix even
though the corequisite fix specified in the
Engine cumulative fix is contained inside of the March 3rd
Session cumulative.

* RECOMMENDATION:                                              *

Cumulative type interim fixes acummulate content between
successive fixes. Particular rules are required to properly
specify the relationships between successive cumulative fixes,
and special coding is required to test these relationships.
The pre-existing methods of specifying and testing the
relationships (prerequisite and co-requisite relationships)
was updated to provide the necessary additional function.

User visible behavior has changed in so far as to provide
additional prerequisite and co-requisite error messages. The
bulk of the details for this problem are appropriate for
developers who are creating cumulative type interim fixes.
Problem conclusion
The Update Installer was modified to properly handle
prerequisite and co-requisite interim fixes. This ability is
available starting at Fix Pack 5.0.2 .
