Problem(Abstract) |
A large majority of installation problems are due to one
or more key installation instructions not being followed correctly or not
being followed at all. Below is a listing of key items to review and
verify when experiencing difficulty installing IBM® WebSphere® Application
Server. |

Resolving the
problem |
Key areas of concern that can cause installation of
WebSphere Application Server to fail or complete with errors:
- Installation prerequisites have not been met prior to installation or
upgrade of WebSphere Application Server.
The operating system and WebSphere Application Server prerequisites must
be met before installing or upgrading the WebSphere Application Server.
Installation Prerequisites for WebSphere Application Server can be
verified at:
IBM Software - WebSphere Application Server - Product Overview
- Installation and upgrades must be performed by person with proper user
ID.
Installation and upgrades to WebSphere Application Server V5.0, V5.1 and
V6.0 must be performed by the actual root user in UNIX® environments and
the administrator in Windows® environments. Files should also be unpacked
using the same level of authority on the operating system where the
installation or update is to occur. Refer to the links provided in item
number three as well.
IBM
- Root or administrator authority is required for installation of Fix
Packs, Interim Fixes or cumulative fixes
WebSphere Application Server V6.1 does allow for installation by a
non-root user. However, there are limitations concerning the non-root user
installation. Review the information in the WebSphere Application Server
V6.1 Information Center.
Limitations
of non-root installers
- Maintain file permissions and symbolic links when unpacking
installation images.
File permissions and symbolic links can be lost or changed if installation
images are unpacked improperly or FTP was improperly completed.
IBM
- Installer or startServer script cannot find Java™ files in the
/java/bin/exe directory for WebSphere Application Server V5
IBM
- Launchpad errors installing V5.0 on Linux® from downloaded CD install
image
- Use the latest version of the update installer whenever installing Fix
Packs, cumulative fixes, Interim Fixes or refresh packs. Always install
with the proper user ID as referenced in number two above. Before running
the update installer, from the <INSTALL_ROOT>/bin directory of the
WebSphere Application Server instance being updated, run the setupCmdLine
utility first to set Java home. In Windows systems this is done by running
setupCmdLine.bat. In UNIX systems you must source setupCmdLine.
IBM
- Sourcing setupCmdLine.sh to initialize the WebSphere environment
variables
To download the latest version of the update installer for your version of
WebSphere Application Server , go to:
IBM
- Recommended updates for WebSphere Application Server Base and Network
Deployment editions
- The WebSphere Application Server V6.0 update installer must be run
from the <PRODUCT_INSTALL_ROOT>/updateinstaller directory. This
directory is created by downloading a refresh pack, Fix Pack,
cumulative fix or updated build of the updateinstaller into the
<PRODUCT_INSTALL_ROOT> directory. The unpacking of the update
creates the updateinstaller directory under the
<PRODUCT_INSTALL_ROOT>. The updates themselves will be unpacked into
the <PRODUCT_INSTALL_ROOT>/updateinstaller/maintenance directory as
a ".pak" file as part of the unpacking process. Do not unpack the ".pak"
file any further.
There will be a separate updateinstaller directory created under
<IHS_ROOT>/updateinstaller, <Plugins_ROOT>/updateinstaller and
<WebSphere_INSTALL_ROOT>/updateinstaller when the individual
product's maintenance packs have been unpacked successfully. The updates
for each product in V6.0 can only be run successfully from the
<INSTALL_ROOT>/updateinstaller directory of that product. Review the
following V6.0 Information Center section: Installing
maintenance packages. Also, review the readme for the V6.0 Update
Installer: IBM
- Readme: IBM WebSphere Update Installer for WebSphere Software, V6.0.
- Beginning with selected operating systems in WebSphere Application
Server V6.0.1, 64-bit support is offered. Be sure when downloading updates
to WebSphere Application Server V6.0.1 and higher that you are downloading
the correct updates for either the 32-bit installed image or the 64-bit
installed image of WebSphere Application Server.
