PK17716: USER IS ALLOWED TO CONFIGURE THE RING BUFFER TRACE WITH VALUES THAT CAN CAUSE AN OUTOFMEMORY CONDITION IN THE JVM.

APAR status
Closed as fixed if next.

Error description
Configuration of the ring buffer trace allows for values that
cause an OutOfMemory condition of the JVM. The combination of
how verbose a trace string can be, together with the size of the
buffer ( X thousand entries ) can grow to a large memory
requirement from the heap. A warning message or a
pre-calculation of the ring buffer size in comparison to the
total JVM heap would safeguard the customer from unknowingly
straining the JVM or in worst cases cause an OutOfMemory
condition.

* USERS AFFECTED: Users of the circular trace buffer in *
*                 WebSphere Application Server.                *
****************************************************************
* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The circular buffer can be configured *
* to hold a large number of objects *
* which can then cause all memory to be *
* allocated and crash the JVM with an *
*                      OutOfMemoryError.                       *
****************************************************************
* RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
****************************************************************
In future releases the circular buffer will hold on to a
serialized form (a binary representation) of logging entries
and the size will be configurable in bytes. This will prevent
running out of memory.

The latest release of the product to exit development at the
time this APAR was closed was: WebSphere Application Server
version 6.0.2.
