APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
This problem occurs on all current WebSphere Application Server
versions (not just 5.02 as stated in the instructions below)
on Windows only.

Steps to reproduce
this WebSphere crash, you must have a WAS 5.0.2 on Windows
(XP, Windows 2000, Windows 2003: behaviour is the same).
Follow these steps:
1. Start WAS
2. Using WAS Admin Console, on "server1", set Process
Definition
environment variable PATH with any value
3. Start a DOS Command window
4. Type: set Path1=xxx
5. Start WebSphere, using in the same DOS Command windows:
<was
install path>/bin/startServer.bat server1
6. The output of startServer.bat is "Server server1 open for
e-business; process id is 1180", but WebSphere process is
nowhere, it
just crashed!
7. Type in the same DOS Command windows: set Path1=
8. Start WebSphere, using in the same DOS Command windows:

install path>/bin/startServer.bat server1
9. WebSphere successfully starts

Local fix
Local Workaround is to include "set Path1=" in the
startServer.bat script. This occurs with Path2 or Path1FooBar,
actually we understood that the bug occurs for any Path*XYW...
variable, if * is an character having ASCII code under "="
(equal sign).

Crash when starting application server.
Steps to reproduce
Follow these steps:
1. Start Application Server

The bug occurs for any Path*XYW... variable, if * is any
character having an ASCII code under "=" (equal sign).
Problem conclusion
Error in code has been fixed to properly handle the problem
ASCII characters. This fix is targeted for the following
releases:
5.1.1.8
5.0.2.14
6.0.2.5
