 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
V5.0.2 Fix Pack 2 installation fails on WebSphere® Application Server V5.0 with the following errors:

WUPD0218E: Fix pack installation failure: The component config.templates failed to install.

Error 196 -- Failed to prepare instance data.

Symptom
Version 5.0.2 Fix Pack 2 installation fails on WebSphere Application Server V5.0 with the following errors:

Failed to perform extraction.

Exception: WUPD0248E: Fix pack update failure: The processing of fix pack was50_fp2_<OS>, component config.templates failed. See the log file  /opt/WebSphere/AppServer5/logs/update/*_ was50_fp2_<OS>_config.templates_install.log for processing details.

WUPD0218E: Fix pack installation failure: The component config.templates failed to install.

Cause

WebSphere Application Server is federated, but the WAS_CELL variable is not updated. WAS_CELL contains the default server name as if the server was never federated to a cell. After the variable is changed to the cell name to which this node is federated, the update works correctly.

This might happen when you uninstall a cumulative fix or fix pack. The update installer restores the previous setupCmdLine, which might have pre-federation WAS_HOME and WAS_CELL values.

Another cause for this error is that values at the Node level are removed. If you delete all the variables at the node level and attempt to apply the fix pack, the install fails with the failed to prepare instance data error message.

Resolving the problem
  1. Verify that the WAS_CELL and WAS_NODE variables are listed in the setupCmdline.sh file.

  2. Update the setupCmdline.sh file with the correct WAS_CELL information. Do NOT use # signs to comment out a line and put in a new one. REPLACE the incorrect information with the correct information. The Update Installer does not understand # signs as comments and will parse those values in that instance.

  3. If this does not resolve the problem, verify that the following variable is set to the NODE level:

    APP_INSTALL_ROOT value="install_root/installedApps"
