Question
Can a Work Manager be compared to a thread pool?

Answer
Yes, Work Managers play the same role in the WebSphere Application Server Enterprise V5 programming model as thread pools play in non-J2EE multi-threaded applications.
Work objects can be created and pooled, to provide a high performance ability to respond to events. When it receives an event notification, a listener component can simply ask a Work Manager for a Work object and start the work on that object, rather than process the event itself (synchronously). It can also take the time to create a new Work object to handle the event.

This results in considerable performance enhancement in high volume asynchronous work request scenarios. Work Managers also provide a means for establishing different processing prioritization, based on how they are configured and mapped to available resources.
