Log files to monitor the activity of WebSphere ® Application Server during startup and shutdown
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Where can I find the log files that show when the Application Server is started or stopped?

Resolving the problem
In WebSphere Application Server - Express V5.0, the application server is administered from WebSphere Studio Site Developer. When the server starts or stops, logging of the server activity is sent to the console view of the server perspective, so that all the output from a running server instance, including starting and stopping, is monitored from the console view.

Beginning with WebSphere Application Server - Express V5.0.1 and in V5.0.2, an administrative console is installed to manage the Application Server. When the application server starts and stops from the administrative console, logging of the startup and shutdown processes is written to separate files. These log files are created in directory location WAS_INSTALL_DIR\AppServer\logs\srv_instance_name, where WAS_INSTALL_DIR is the directory that WebSphere Application Server - Express Server is installed, and srv_instance_name is the name of the server instance.

For example, if the server instance name is default server1, then the log files are written to the WAS_INSTALL_DIR\AppServer\logs\server1 directory. Following are the log files created:

  • startServer.log - traces application server activity during startup.
  • stopServer.log - traces application server activity during shutdown.

While the server is running, a server1.pid file in the same location contains the operating system process id associated with that server instance.
