Installation fails using Update Installer after uninstalling
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
When installing and uninstalling IBM® WebSphere® Application Server, if the install does not succeed, do not attempt to reinstall before completing the uninstall process without errors.

Cause
When using the Update Installer in WebSphere Application Version 5.0 and 5.1, be aware that if an uninstall operation is started, you cannot perform another Update Installer installation until that uninstall is successful.
For example, if you apply a fix pack and encounter errors, you can uninstall that fix pack, but you must complete the uninstall without errors before applying any more fixes, otherwise your WebSphere Application Server installation will be corrupted and require that you completely uninstall and reinstall WebSphere Application Server.

If the installation fails and you attempt to reinstall that same fix pack, the component that failed to install initially may be skipped during your subsequent attempt to reinstall.

Even if your installation to have succeeded, you may not be able to remove that fix or fix pack. In the case of a cumulative fix that would need to be uninstalled before a higher fix pack can be installed, the uninstall might fail without the ability to uninstall it.

This is caused by attempting to reinstall after the failed uninstall process.

Resolving the problem
There is no current solution to this behavior. The only option is to assure that uninstalls are completed before attempting any reinstall.
