Installing the WebSphere Application Client Version 5.0.2.11 on the Windows 2003 operating system

Problem(Abstract)
The IBM® WebSphere® Application Client Version 5 does not support the Windows® 2003 operating system prior to Cumulative Fix 11 (5.0.2.11).
 
Cause
The InstallShield software in Version 5.0 does not support the Windows 2003 operating system. The Application Client Version 5.0 installer does not start on Windows 2003.
 
Resolving the problem
Complete the following instructions to apply the contents of the required fix for installing the WebSphere Application Client on the Windows 2003 operating system:
Prerequisite: The Application Client Version 5.0 supplementary CD is required. If you are using an electronic image, you must unzip the image in a local hard drive.
  1. Download the fix file (190 MB).
  2. Unzip the wasclientw2k3.zip file to a temporary directory, such as C:\temp. The ZIP file contains the following:
    • Application Client Version 5 installation image fix
    • Application Client Version 5.0 Fix Pack 2
    • Fix Pack 2 Cumulative Fix for SDKs (1.3.1_SR8)
    • Fix Pack 2 Cumulative Fix 11

  3. Run the patch.bat command with the location of the CD-ROM drive (or location of the unzipped electronic image) as the argument. Use the following example as a guide:

    C:\temp\wasclientw2k3\patch.bat d:\


    This step might take several minutes. After it is complete, a new patched installation image is created in a subdirectory. Use the following directory as an example:

    C:\temp\wasclientw2k3\ClientW2K3

  4. Run the install.bat command from the new patched installation image to install Application Client Version 5. Use the following directory as an example:

    C:\temp\wasclientw2k3\ClientW2K3\nt\install.bat

  5. Run the setupClient.bat command from the application installation root directory. Use the following example as a guide:

    C:\Progra~1\WebSphere\AppClient\bin\setupClient.bat

  6. Run the updateWizard.bat command in the updates subdirectory to start the updateInstaller. Use the following directory as an example:

    C:\temp\wasclientw2k3\updates


  7. Install the Fix Pack 2. Installing Fix Pack 2 allows the updateInstaller to acquire Version 5.0.2 Cumulative Fix 11 and Version 5.0.2 Cumulative Fix for the SDK.
  8. Install the SDK and Version 5.0.2.11 Cumulative Fix for Version 5.0.2. The updates directory contains all three fix packs.

  • How do I uninstall Application Client Version 5 from Windows 2003 operating systems?
Uninstalling the Application Client using Windows Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs) is not supported on Windows 2003 operating systems. This is because the native installer (install.exe) and native uninstaller (uninstall.exe) are not supported in the Windows 2003 environment.

Use the Java™ launch command to run the uninstaller. Use the following example,

appClient\java\jre\bin\java -cp
appClient\_uninst\uninstall.jar  run

Where the appClient variable is the installation location of the Application Client.
  • What are the space requirements?
The installation requires 800 MB free space in your Windows 2003 file system to complete the following actions:
  1. Unpack the fix zip file.
  2. Contain the patched installation image.
  3. Support the 290 MB free space required in the current Windows user temp directory.
  4. Support the addition 230 MB of free space that is also required for the Application Client installation and the back-up files for the fix pack in the /properties/version/backup directory of the product installation root.
