WebSphere Application Server V5.x best practices for configuration changes
 White paper

Abstract
This white paper describes how to manually modify certain parts of the WebSphere® Application Server version 5.x configuration that are not available through the administrative tooling that comes with the product. Version 5.x configuration, for all editions of the product, is stored in XML files in a subdirectory under the main product installation root directory.

Administrative tooling shipped with WebSphere provides support for modifying most of the configuration settings. This tooling includes the Web-based administrative console program, the wsadmin scripting tool, command line utilities, and even a public Java™ API for WebSphere administration.

While the version 5.x tooling supports altering most of the configuration, certain modifications that impact the structure of the configuration directories (the topology of the environment) were not available to be shipped with the version 5.x products. However, these changes can be accomplished without tooling through the manual procedures described in this document.

Each section of this document treats a specific configuration modification separately. Each section begins with a short discussion of the issues related to changing the specific part of the configuration. Then one or more procedures are provided to itemize the steps required to perform the modification manually.

WebSphere Administrative tooling does not have the functionality to change the cell name, node name, or host name of the Base Node or Deployment Manager. This white paper lists the steps required to achieve these tasks by manually editing the configuration repository.
