How to change the temporary directory for the updateInstaller for WebSphere Version 5.0

Problem(Abstract)
How to set non-default temporary directory for the update installer application for Version 5

Resolving the problem
Approximately 250 MB of free space is required in the temporary directory ( /tmp directory on a UNIX®-based platform , %TEMP% directory on Windows®) when installing a WebSphere® Application Server fix pack.
If there is not enough space in the temporary directory , the updateInstaller fails to install a fix pack. However, in some production system environments, it's not realistic to increase the size of the directory file system.

The updateSilent.sh(updateSilent.bat on Windows) and updateWizard.sh(updateWizard.sh on Windows) do not provide a command line option to redirect the temporary directory to another place; however, you can change the temporary directory by modifying the updateSilent.sh(updateSilent.bat on Windows) or updateWizard.sh(updateWizard.bat on Windows) script.

The temporary directory is specified by the was.version.tmp.dir Java property or, if the was.version.tmp.dir property is not set, by the java.io.tmpdir Java system property.

Follow these steps to change the default temporary directory:
  1. Make a backup copy of the script you are going to use; either updateSilent.sh/updateSilent.bat or updateWizard.sh/updateWizard.bat.
  2. Locate the Java™ command line to be modified. There are 16 Java command lines in the scripts. (If you are using Fix Pack 5.0.1, edit the last Java command if there's no options specified).
  3. Edit Java command line to add "-Djava.io.tmpdir" Java property between "-cp" and "JAVA_HOME".

For example, change temporary directory to /tempfs:
    if [ "$runInstaller" ]
    then echo
    else
    "$JAVA_HOME"/bin/java \
    -Xmx256m \
    -Djava.io.tmpdir="/tempfs" \
    -cp "$currentDir"/installer.jar:"$currentDir"/lib/extfile.jar \
    -Dswing.defaultlaf="$MotifLAF" \
    run
    fi
  4. Save and run the script.
