Embedded JMS client license restriction change between WebSphere Application Server V5.0 and V5.1
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
The WebSphere® Application Server V5.0 and V5.1 licenses contain different statements concerning the manner in which the embedded JMS client component can be used. This technote outlines these differences.

Resolving the problem
The WebSphere Application Server V5.0 license states:
- Java Messaging Service components: Limited to use to connect to, interact with, access and use the other Program components, and not for use to connect to, interact with, access or use software other than the Program components.

This means that the embedded JMS client cannot be used to connect to an external WebSphere MQ 5.3 server. It can be used only to connect to the embedded JMS server component. The MQ Client must be installed to connect to an external MQ server from a WebSphere application.

The WebSphere Application Server V5.1 license states:

- Java Messaging Service components (other than the Java Messaging Service Client): Limited to use to connect to, interact with, access and use the other Program components.

- Java Messaging Service Client (Client only):  Limited to use to connect to, interact with, access and use the other Program components as well as independent copies of WebSphere MQ v. 5.3 and subsequent releases thereof.

This means that with WebSphere V5.1, the embedded JMS client can be used to connect to an external WebSphere MQ 5.3 server. It is not necessary to install the MQ Client.
