Login Failure When Security is Enabled Using Local OS Account in a Windows Domain
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Troubleshooting a login failure after enabling security using LocalOS user registry on Windows® platforms.

Resolving the problem
When starting your application server, you receive the following login failure:

[6/18/02 11:30:59:600 CDT] 6841e10c SystemOut U JSAS0240E:
Login failed. Verify the userid/password is correct. Check the properties file to ensure the login source is valid. If this error occurs on the server, check the server properties to ensure the principalName has a valid realm and userid.

Since your security has been enabled using the Local OS as the user registry, the Windows domain user account must also have the following privileges:

  • Log on as service.
  • Act as part of the operating system.
Login failures will occur if only the local account user is granted these privileges.

The requirements for the Windows user id running WebSphere® Application Server are:
  1. The service has to be started by a local account user that has "Act as part of the operating system" and "Log on as service" rights.
  2. The domain account user also must have those same rights.
  3. Both users (local account and domain account) must be part of the Windows Administrators group.

For more information and examples, see the article titled Local operating system user registries in the version 5.0.1+ Information Center. The sub sections titled Required Privileges and Domain and local registries apply to all releases of both V4.0 and V5.0:
