Getting background information on the node agent monitoring
The monitoring policy of an Application Server defines how the node agent will monitor the application server, and what actions it will take (restart or not restart). The Information Center documents how this works in the topic, monitoring policy settings. This functionality is only available in a Network Deployment environment. A stand-alone base environment does not have a node agent.

The IBM Education Assistant also has good information on this, called Monitoring WebSphere Application Server Processes.
