Error description
Migration is incorrectly detecting a Generic Server migration
for the Intranet and Internet host servers. When the
customer sets the executeable name to an unexpected value for
the WebSphere servers, the migration process algorithm
incorrectly sets the Intranet and Internet host servers to
Generic Servers rather than Application Servers.
The customer may choose to repeat the postmigration step using
one of the workarounds provided here or wait and apply this
interim fix in order to have the servers correctly appear as
application servers in the Administrative Console.
Details:
The Application Servers being converted into Generic Servers
incorrectly have an executable name setting in the process
definition.
The example in the Internet_Host server's server.xml file is:
executableName="${JAVA_HOME}/bin/jvExtran00"
The example in the Intranet_Host server's server.xml file is:
executableName="${JAVA_HOME}/bin/jvIntran00"
This value is set in all of the affected servers (Internet_host,
Intranet_Host, RMServer etc.)
By default, WebSphere Application Servers do not have the
executable name set, and in the processing of these values, the
migration code does not expand the ${JAVA_HOME} variable.
Therefore, a valid java path moniker is not found, and this
causes the Generic Server migration.
Local fix
Workaround: (Numbers 2 and 3 require the customer to rerun
postmigration)
1) The customer can delete the Generic Servers and create new
Application Servers in the migrated environment. The customer
will need to redeploy applications to the new servers.
NOTE: The following changes (Number 2 and Number 3) should be
performed in the v5.0 environment and then the customer
reruns pre and post migration.
2) The customer can remove the executableName field from the
affected servers and rerun migration.
3) The customer can expand the ${JAVA_HOME} variable in the
executableName in the server.xml so that the path includes the
keyword "java" in lowercase. Then rerun the migration.
Problem summary
****************************************************************
* USERS AFFECTED: WebSphere Application Server users who have *
* set the executable name field for their *
* application servers. *
****************************************************************
* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Customer Application Servers may be *
* incorrectly converted to Generic *
* Servers in version 6. *
****************************************************************
* RECOMMENDATION: *
****************************************************************
In version 6.0 Application Server introduced the GenericServer
type. Migration may incorrectly detect that a customer's
Application_Server is a Generic Server if the customer has set
a value for the executableName that does not include an
explicite path to the java directory. Variables are not
expanded during this check, so customers using ${JAVA_HOME}
will still encounter this problem.
Problem conclusion
With this fix, migration will check against different data to
identify if a server should be converted to a Generic Server or
not.
The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion
in fixpacks 6.0.2.17 and 6.1.0.3.
