UpdateInstaller fails due to customized environment variables
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
When installing WebSphere® Application Server V5 Fix Pack 2 on Windows®, the updateInstaller fails to load both the updateWizard GUI and the updateSilent command line application. Both fail without meaningful logging or tracing information.

Cause
When installing another IBM® product, such as the Lotus® Workplace for Content Management that is installed with WebSphere Portal, you must create certain operating system environment variables. These variables prevent the updateInstaller from correctly installing WebSphere Application Server V5.0.2.

Resolving the problem
These variables are no longer in use by the your application, so they must be removed. The application of the fix pack can then proceed successfully.
