Setting the maximum size of permanent generation for HotSpot™ v1.0.1 and v1.3.1
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Instructions on setting the maximum size of permanent generation for the Java™ HotSpot virtual machine.

Resolving the problem
To set the maximum size of permanent generation in HotSpot v1.0.1, use the command line option:
-XX:MaxPermSize=<desired size in kilo bytes>

For example: -XX:MaxPermSize=32768

Appending k or K to indicate kilobytes, or m or M to indicate megabytes is not supported in HotSpot v1.0.1. This option only takes an integer that specifies a value in kilobytes.

To set the maximum size of permanent generation in HotSpot v1.3.1, use the command line option:

-XX:MaxPermSize=<desired size in bytes>

This sets the maximum size of permanent generation (in bytes). Appending the letter k or K to indicate kilobytes, or m or M to indicate megabytes is supported.

For example: -XX:MaxPermSize=128K specifies a value of 128 kilobytes for MaxPermSize.
