Coexistence of IBM WebSphere 5.x Embedded Messaging and full WebSphere MQSeries product
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
Can IBM® WebSphere® Application Server 5.x Embedded Messaging and the full WebSphere MQSeries® product coexist on the same system?

Resolving the problem
The full MQSeries and WebSphere Embedded Messaging can coexist on the same system, provided that:
  • The full MQSeries is at least at the 5.3 CSD 1 level
  • The full MQSeries must be installed before WebSphere Embedded Messaging

Other Possible Scenarios

  • Scenario 1: Install Embedded Messaging with no previous MQSeries installed
    • Select Embedded Messaging client and server components during WebSphere Application Server installation.
    • Installation creates a queue manager (WAS_nodename_servername) and broker, and sets up some default JMS resources.

  • Scenario 2: Install the full MQSeries on same box as Embedded Messaging
    • Upgrade MQSeries to 5.3 CSD 1 or higher before installing WebSphere Application Server. (This is the officially supported and tested level for WebSphere MQSeries JMS Provider)
    • Select Embedded Messaging client and server components during WebSphere Application Server installation.

  • Scenario 3: Accessing an MQSeries server on a remote machine
    • Upgrade MQSeries to 5.3 CSD 1 or higher.
    • Install the WebSphere MQSeries Client on the WebSphere Application Server machine.

  • Scenario 4: Install embedded messaging for now, but might want to upgrade to full MQSeries later.
    • Proceed as with scenario 1.
    • Embedded Messaging installation can be upgraded to full WebSphere MQSeries 5.3 later. When you run the full MQSeries installation, it asks if you want to remove or modify the version of MQSeries that is currently installed (Embedded Messaging). Choose to remove the Server and select to keep existing queue managers.
