Cumulative fixes 5.0.2.4 and 5.1.0.3 fail during WebSphere Studio Test Environment upgrade: Input line too long
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
When applying IBM® WebSphere® Application Server cumulative fixes V5.0.2.4 and V5.1.0.3 to the WebSphere Test Environment (WTE) inside WebSphere Studio versions V5.x, the fix application will fail during the execution of any number of JACL scripts.

Cause
The full file names of the JACL scripts executed by the Update Installer are created using the default installation directory of WebSphere Studio V5.x and the concatenated WebSphere Application Server runtime directory and subdirectories. The resulting file name exceeds the 255 character limitation for file names on Microsoft® Windows® platforms, and cannot be correctly interpreted by the Update Installer.

Resolving the problem
The "input line too long" error is written to the log:
2004-03-29T11:22:35-06:00 was_home=(C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere Studio\Application Developer\v5.1\runtimes\base_v5)

2004-03-29T11:22:35-06:00 target=(C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere Studio\Application Developer\v5.1\runtimes\base_v5)

2004-03-29T11:22:35-06:00  Command=""C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere Studio\Application Developer\v5.1\runtimes\base_v5\bin\wsadmin.bat" -conntype NONE -f "C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere Studio\Application Developer\v5.1\runtimes\base_v5\util\ManualEdit.jacl""

2004-03-29T11:22:35-06:00     RC=255

This behavior is corrected in cumulative fixes V5.0.2.5 and V5.1.0.4. IBM recommends applying the latest cumulative fixpack.

A potentially undesirable workaround for test or development machines would be to reinstall WebSphere Studio V5.x into a directory with a shorter name.

The following solution describes a method of manipulating the WTE environment that is unsupported by IBM. Please consider this a last-resort workaround:

  1. Move the /base_vXXX dir (where XXX = 502 or 51) directory to the root operating system directory.
  2. Apply the cumulative fix
  3. Move it back to its home directory inside WebSphere Studio.

This has not been tested by IBM and is not recommended; again, the desired solution is to move to a later cumulative fix.
