PQ73493: updateInstaller does not handle missing DTD files gracefully. Claims WebSphere not installed when attempting to apply Fix Pack

A fix is available

5.0.2: WebSphere Application Server Version 5.0 Fix Pack 2 (Version 5.0.2)

APAR status
Closed as program error.

Error description
Symptom: When using updateInstaller to apply Fix Pack to a
remote webserver in order to update the plug-in, the
updateInstaller will claim that WebSphere has not been
installed. If using the Wizard, it will not proceed past the
screen in which it asks which directory WebSphere was installed
in. It is important to note that this situation applies to a
REMOTE webserver - not the server on which the AppServer has
Local fix
been insta led. Typically, customers install only the plug-in
on the remote webserver.
The problem is that the WebSphere AppServer 5.0 base
installation does not place necessary files in
<WAS_HOME>/properties/version/dtd. (Customer was installing
iPlanet plug-in). The updateInstaller looks for the presence of
these files to confirm that WebSphere has been installed. When
it cannot find these files, it claims that WebSphere was not
installed at that location. The Fix Pack install cannot
proceed, and the updateInstaller does not drop any logs.
LOCAL FIX:ﾝ
Temporary workaround: The files from
<WAS_HOME>/properties/version/dtd directory can be copied from
the AppServer server to the corresponding directory on the
remote webserver.

The Fix Pack may then be applied to the remote webserver.

Need to copy over the WAS_HOME/properties/version/dtd
directory from the WebSphere Application Server machine
where WebSphere Application Server v5.0 is installed to the
web server machine.
This fix has added the dtd directory to the UpdateInstaller
which will be used during the installation.
Problem conclusion
The WAS_HOME/properties/version/dtd directory is now
added so that the UpdateInstaller can be applied to a plugin-
only installation such as a remote web server machine.
