Installation code does not support "in memory filesystems" (i.e., tmpfs)
 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)
When trying to run the WebSphere installation program, or update installer on a machine with /tmp mounted as a memory based filesystem (such as, tmpfs) the installer crashes claiming there is not enough disk space.

Cause
On some operating systems (most notably *ix related), it is possible to define "in memory filesystems". Unfortunately, the technique used by the multiplatform installation code is unable to properly determine the available space on this type of filesystem.

Resolving the problem
Use a local disk based filesystem for /tmp.
