Using silent installation on HP-UX
You can use native installation functionality to install WebSphere Application
Server. The steps below describe how to install WebSphere Application Server using the
noninteractive (silent) mode. Silent installation is useful when you want to install
the same configuration on multiple machines.
To complete a silent installation, you must create a response file and then use it
to perform the installation.
Creating a response file
You can create a response file using one of two methods:
- You can install WebSphere Application Server one time using the Graphical User
Interface (GUI) installation procedure and save your configuration to a response file
when prompted by the script. You must then copy this file to the installation directory
on each machine on which you want to perform a silent installation.
- Using the supplied response file (Response.hp) as a template, you can create
and edit a customized response file. To create a response file from the response file
template, perform the following steps:
- Ensure that you are logged into the machine on which you want to perform the
silent installation with superuser (root) privileges.
- Ensure that you have the DISPLAY and TERM environment variables set correctly
for your environment.
- Ensure that a CD-ROM drive is installed on the machine.
- Insert the WebSphere Application Server CD and mount it as follows:
- Invoke the HP-UX System Administration Manager (SAM) by entering the following
command: # /usr/sbin/sam
- Double-click the Disks and File Systems icon.
- On the Disks and File Systems screen, double-click the Disk Devices icon.
A list of disk devices displays.
- Select the CD-ROM drive from the list of disk devices and click
Actions > Mount. The Mount CD-ROM screen displays.
- In the Mount Directory field, enter
/cdrom
.
- In the When To Mount area, ensure that both the Now and
At Every System Boot options are selected.
- Ensure that the Set User ID Execution option is selected.
- Click OK.
- On the Disks and File Systems screen, click File > Exit.
- Click File > Exit SAM to exit from SAM.
The steps below assume that the CD is mounted at /cdrom.
- Navigate to the directory containing the Response.hp file by entering the
following command:
# cd <cd_root>/var/spool/sw
- Create a customized response file by copying the file Response.hp; use the
following command:
# cp Response.hp <response_file>
<response_file> is the full pathname of the response file you
are creating (for instance, /tmp/<response_file>).
By default, the file that you create directly from the template installs HP-UX SDK
1.2, IBM HTTP Server Version, InstantDB, and WebSphere Application Server, as well as
configures WebSphere Application Server for use with IBM HTTP Server Version and
InstantDB. Further, it installs documentation in U.S. English, WebSphere
Application Server application samples, and files that make the product compatible
with the Tivoli System Management Tool.
You can also use a text editor to edit your response file to permit configuration
with other selected Web servers or databases, to install documentation in selected
languages, or to choose another installation location (the default location is
/opt/WebSphere/AppServer). Detailed instructions within the template file guide you
in your selections.
Silently installing WebSphere Application Server
Perform the following steps to install WebSphere Application Server using the
noninteractive (silent) mode. These instructions assume that installation is made from
the product CD.
- Ensure that you are logged into the machine on which you want to perform the
silent installation with superuser (root) privileges.
- Ensure that you have the DISPLAY and TERM environment variables set correctly for
your environment.
- Ensure that a CD-ROM drive is installed on the machine.
- Insert the WebSphere Application Server CD and mount it as follows:
- Invoke SAM by entering the following command: # /usr/sbin/sam
- Navigate to the directory containing the shell script install.sh by entering
the following command:
# cd <cd_root>/var/spool/sw
- Run the shell script install.sh with your response file as the only argument by
entering the following command:
# ./install.sh <response_file>
<response_file> is the full pathname for your response file. The
install.sh shell script then uses this response file to silently install the
components and options that you have selected into the chosen installation location
in U.S. English (the default installation location is /opt/WebSphere/AppServer).
Because the shell script performs some pre- and post-processing steps on the
installation, do not use SAM to run the script.
Note: If you choose to install the plugin for IBM HTTP Server, the
installation process checks if you have the correct version of the server
(1.3.12.0) on your machine. If you do not have this product on your machine and you
have indicated in your response file that you want to have it installed, the
installation process installs it. (You must manually back up and merge any existing
configuration and date files from previous editions of IBM HTTP Server.) If you do
not have this product on your machine and you have indicated in your response file
that you do not want to have it installed, the script exits without installing the
product.
- After installation, use the swlist -l product command to determine if the
silent installation was successful.
