2: Installing WebSphere Application Server

To install WebSphere Application Server or to upgrade a previous installation of WebSphere Application Server:

  1. Determine whether you have the correct levels of software that WebSphere Application Server requires to run on your machine's operating system.

Note that WebSphere Application Server comes with a Java Development Kit, a Web server (IBM HTTP Server, or the NetWare Enterprise Web Server included with IBM WebSphere for NetWare and with NetWare 5.1), and one or more database products (InstantDB for evaluation uses and, on Windows, DB2 Universal Database).

  2. If you are using a version of WebSphere Application Server previous to Version 3.5 and you have data that you want to use with Version 3.5, complete any needed migration.
  3. Follow the installation instructions appropriate for your machine's operating system, given your choice of Web server and database.

To view the PDF and HTML installation instructions available for your operating system, click one of the operating systems links available on the Welcome page.

If you later need to uninstall WebSphere Application Server, use the Uninstall option available to you and complete any needed additional steps.

Performing large rollouts efficiently

See article 2.2. to learn how to use the XML export/import facilities and silent installation functionality to perform identical installations of WebSphere Application Server on different machines. Consider this option if you are installing identical configurations of WebSphere Application Server on separate machines as part of a large rollout.
