You can use the XML export/import facilities along with the silent installation functionality to perform identical installations of WebSphere Application Server on different machines. You may wish to consider this option if you are installing identical configurations of WebSphere Application Server on separate machines as part of a large rollout. Note that this type of installation will result in identical but separate installations of WebSphere (i.e., the Application Servers will not recognize each other). Do not perform this type of installation if you wish to install WebSphere on separate machines for purposes such as cloning (thus allowing you to configure Workload Management, etc.) where the various Application Servers will work together. See Using models and clones for further details.
You will need to copy two files from your first installation to the other machines onto which you will install identical versions of WebSphere Application Server:
To perform a silent installation, you must first customize a response file and then use it to perform the installation. See Silent Installation for details on how to do this for your particular platform. You have the choice of installing WebSphere Application Server using this response file after you edit the file to customize your installation choices, or using the graphical installation programs to customize your installation and generate a corresponding response file. In either case, the response file will be used for installations on your other machines where you wish to perform identical installations.
After you perform the installation on your first machine, you will need to start the WebSphere Application Server and open the Administrative Console to configure your system. Once you have finished this configuration you will export an XML file that details that machine's configuration. You can do this either by selecting Console/Export... from the Administrative Console menu or by using the XMLConfig tool. The resulting file will be used to configure WebSphere on your other machines. You may wish to edit the original XML file to include variable substitutes before you import it to your other machines, to allow each server to specify a particular variable unique to that machine (such as the node name). See XMLConfig - Using the tool programmatically for more details.
