Websphere Administration Server will not startup when service is set to AUTOMATIC within services panel

Problem
The WebSphere® Application Server admin server fails to start on multi-processor system when Microsoft® Windows® service is set to AUTOMATIC in services panel
Solution
This problem has been resolved in Websphere Application Server 3.5 fix pack 6. Interim fix PQ54029 is included within the fix pack. However, after installing fix pack 6 you will need to add the following lines to the admin.config file in order to completely resolve the problem:

com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.waitForStop=true
# max wait time for server to stop in seconds. You can change this number.
com.ibm.ejs.sm.adminServer.maxWaitTime=600
