Install step of local InfoCenter fails with " The name specified is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file "

Technote (FAQ)
Problem
Install procedure for local InfoCenter requires Java, which may not be on operating system PATH even if WebSphere is installed.
Solution
It's nice to have the InfoCenter for WebSphere 3.5 locally installed, so you don't have to wait on network response time to browse documentation. (It's available at http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/infocenter.html.) However, the installation requires that Java be installed on the operating system where the InfoCenter is running. If you don't have Java, when you try to run the installation step you see the following error:

java -jar jarfilename.jar

(where jarfilename is probably infocenter). You'll get the error message The name specified is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. This can happen even if WebSphere is installed, because its Java is self-contained and the operating system isn't aware of the presence of Java.

To fix the problem, edit the PATH environment variable to include <WebSphereDriveLetter>:\WebSphere\AppServer\jdk\bin
