"libjvm.a not found" Error when Running the Java™ Application Launcher

Technote (FAQ)
Problem
When running your java launcher tool from a command line, you are receiving a "libjvm.a not found" error message.
Solution

Cause:

For example, when you download the WebSphere® Application Server Information Center, you then run the java launcher tool to extract the Information Center:

java -jar infocenter.jar

If this fails with "libjvm.a not found", then the java tool is unable to find the libjvm library.

Solution:

To resolve this error, you can go to a command-line and set the LIBPATH to point to the missing library directory.

For example:
On the AIX® platform, libjvm.a resides in /usr/WebSphere/AppServer/java/jre/bin/classic.
To export the LIBPATH, type the following into a command line:

export LIBPATH=/usr/WebSphere/AppServer/java/jre/bin/classic

From the same command-line prompt, run your java tool again.
In this example: java -jar infocenter.jar

To verify your Java version, type the following into your command-line prompt:

cd /usr/WebSphere/AppServer/java/jre/bin
./java -fullversion
