Leveraging WinVNC for remote administration

Technote (FAQ)
Problem
WinVNC is FREE remote control client and server software that can be leveraged to assist in the administration of remote systems.
Solution
WinVNC is a FREEWARE tool that can be leveraged on multiple operating system platforms. It is freely distributed by the AT&T Research Labs of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The link to the main site is:

http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html

VNC consists of two components, a server and a viewer. The server generates the display and the viewer draws the display. One can view a remote server using one of two methods:

1) Via a web browser that supports JAVA, you can open a URL to http://machinename:5800which is the default port (it can be set to any port) on which the remote control server runs.

2) You can use pre-compiled versions of executable viewers. There is a version for Windows, X-Windows, Java, Macintosh and Windows CE. These are ones supported by the WinVNC lab. There are also builds contributed by others for AIX, SunOS, Linux, even one for the PalmOS, but these are not supported by the originators of the program, but are available for download and/or compiling.

The website has a vast amount of information about setup and security on various operating systems.
