Displaying Characters in other languages correctly

Technote (FAQ)
Problem
The situation is that if the user of a Chinese Windows and IE,
installs theChinese(Taiwan)[zh-tw] font in the Internet Explorer
he/she can't view the chinese characters correctly. But if he/she uses
Chinese(Hong Kong)[zh-hk] font, the page can be seen correctly.
All the chinese character in .html can display correctly except those requests
from servlets.
Solution
Here are the steps to install a new language if you have trouble getting a language to display correctly. This doc was written for the Chinese Taiwan language. You can always locate the particular langauage on the AIX 4.3.3 CD to install using a similar procedure to select the appropriate language.

    • Installing Ch_TW locale on AIX 4.3.3.
    • Insert the Vol 1 of AIX 4.3.3 CD
    • Manage Language Environment
    • Add Additional Language Environment
    • Cultural Convention to install
    • Select these THREE from the long list of languages:
    -UTF-8 Chinese (Traditional) (zH_TW)
    -big 5 T-Chinese (Zh_TW)
    -IBM-eucTW Chinese (Traditional) zh_TW
Notes: Use function key PF7 to make the selection, hit <enter>
This brings you back to the "Add Additional Language" screen.
    From this screen,
    • Select Language Translation to install
    • Choose these THREE language translations:
    -UTF-8 Chinese (Traditional) zH_TW
    -IBM -eucTW Chinese (Traditional) zh_TW
    -IBM-950 T-Chinese (big5) Zh_TW
    • Hit <Enter> to begin the install of both the cultural conventions and the translations for all three charsets for the Zh_TW.

When the installed is finished, log out and login again. From the login screen, select <Options> -><Languages> You should see a list of all three that you just install. Do this and confirm in your pmr update. What may display on screen after the Zh_TW install ( in addition to the charset for en_US): -Chinese (Traditional) IBM_eucTW -Chinese (Traditional) UTF-8 -T-Chinese (big 5) big 5
    Select:
T-Chinese (big 5) big5 before continuing with the login.
Alternatively, you can use the export command to export the locale.
    export lang=Zh_TW
    export LC_ALL=zh_TW

    • Reboot the system with shutdown -Fr
    • Change the Language to big5 and loggon as the root user.
    • Start AdminServer and AdminConsole.
    • Compile a servlet in the big5 locale (can use HelloWorldServlet
Note: MUST compile the servlet in the big5 locale.
    • Add the servlet to a webapp such as the default_app
    • Call the servlet from an IE 5 or Netscape 4.5 or higher.
