Configuring Dr. Watson to get crash dump files on Windows®

Technote (FAQ)
Problem
Some Windows systems are not set up correctly to get a Windows crash dump. This technote explains how to ensure that Dr. Watson is correctly enabled.
Cause
Some systems are not set up correctly to get a Windows crash dump.
Solution
  1. Open a command prompt window.

  2. Type drwtsn32.exe. The window below will display.

  3. Make sure your settings correspond to those shown above. Also, ensure that the Log File Path and Crash Dump paths are known to you, so that you can collect the drwtsn32.log along with the USER.DMP file.

To designate Dr. Watson as the default debugger

If you have been using a debugger other than Dr. Watson, you can issue a drwtsn32 /i from the command prompt to re-enable Dr. Watson as your default Windows debugger. This will make the necessary changes in the Windows registry.
