Rebuilding a Websphere Oracle Repository for WebSphere

Technote (FAQ)
Problem
It is possible for the repository used by WebSphere can become corrupted. In these cases, it is necessary to delete and recreate the repository user in the database.

Easy steps to recreate a clean Websphere Application Server repository using Oracle.
Solution
Recreating an Oracle repository in WebSphere Application Server is NOT the same with DB2 UDB:
  • Using DB2, drop the DB2 database and then create a new database.
  • Using Oracle, the user id (a.k.a. schema) is deleted. WebSphere connects to a specific Oracle user and schema, not a database.
  • Oracle roles and permissions used in the original user account must be configured after a new user account is created.

Steps to creating and deleting an Oracle user for the Websphere Repository using a GUI:
  1. Locate the username, password and the name (i.e., SID) of the repository currently referenced in WebSphere's admin.config.
  2. Access the Oracle tool "DBA Studio" or "Enterprise Manager".
These are GUI interfaces and are simple point and click utilities. You can also do the same tasks with the SQL command line, however this document does not contain the SQL command line syntax.
  3. Select the Websphere Oracle repository from the list of Oracle databases and expand the database with the name of your repository.
  4. Select security from the branch and then select and expand the user from the branch.
  5. Highlight the user from step 1. Tab over to the role and make a note of the roles for the user. Tab over to the System Privileges and make a note of the system privileges for the user.
  6. Delete the user.
  7. Create the user with the same name as the one you previously delete and remember to enter in the password from step 1. Assign the same roles and system privileges as noted in step 5 to the user.
  8. To create a Default Server, edit the admin.config file and change the install.initial.config=true.
If you are restoring your configuration from an XMLconfig backup, set install.initial.config=false.
  9. Restart the adminserver services.
