Do not change any existing Cognos artifacts directly. When developing Cognos reports ensure that these reports are exported to a separate deployment package (zip) to the sample reports provided. When developing with Framework manager create a new project for any new or changed artifact meta data, you can import/reference the sample project provided when building framework manager meta data and deploying to Cognos packages.
