Description ----------- This update to the IBM Intermediate Support driver contains the following fixes: - Under heavy stress, a blue screen may occur on SMP systems which are using the VPN function - Support for SMC network interface cards This update may be applied to any Firewall version from 3.2 to 4.1. Installation ------------ To install this update: 1. Unzip the file into a new directory on the Firewall machine 2. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel 3. Double click on the "Network" icon 4. Click on the "Protocols" tab at the top of the window 5. Click on "IBM Intermediate Support Driver" in the protocols list 6. Click on "Update" 7. A new window will appear which requests that you enter the path to the update files. Enter the name of the directory into which you unzipped the update file in step 1, followed immediately by a backslash ("\") and the National Language version which you require: German: de_DE US English: en_US Spanish: es_ES French: fr_FR Italian: it_IT Japanese: ja_JP Korean: ko_KR Portuguese: pt_BR Simplified Chinese: zh_CN Traditional Chinese: zh_TW For example, if you unzipped the update into the directory d:\temp and you are using a German system, enter "d:\temp\de_DE" as the pathname. After you have entered the pathname, click on "Continue." 8. Click on "Close" 9. Permit the machine re-boot to occur Problems with Certain Network Interface Card Drivers ---------------------------------------------------- Some problems have been found using the IBM Intermediate Support Driver with older network interface card drivers. The following drivers are known to have problems: * Driver AMDPCN.SYS to control the onboard ethernet card in the IBM PC 325 and Netfinity servers. A miniport (NDIS 4.x) driver named PCNTN4M.SYS is available from AMD which replaces the older driver and works correctly with the IBM Intermediate Support Driver. PCNTN4M.SYS is one of AMD's "PCnet Family Software Drivers" and is currently available from: http://www.amd.com/products/npd/software/pcnet/objectcode/ver33.html The driver is part of the "Disk 2" package. * Driver IBMENIIN.SYS which controls the Ethernet /A adapter for MCA. This driver will not work and a newer driver for this network interface card is not available. * Driver IBMEA351.SYS which controls the PCI Ethernet adapter. This driver is apparently in support of NT 3.51, is an old style full NIC driver (not a miniport driver), and no upgrade of the driver is available. In general, the IBM Intermediate Support Driver works best with network interface card drivers that use the miniport driver functions available with NDIS 3.0 or later. If you experience problems with a particular network interface card after the IBM Intermediate Support Driver is installed, check to see if a miniport version of the network interface card driver is available. If a newer driver for the network interface card is available, be sure to install it before attempting to isolate networking problems.
