ES1488 AudioDrive OS/2 Driver Installation Procedure... >>> DO THE FOLLOWING: <<< INSERT THE SYSTEM PROGRAM DISKETTE INTO DRIVE A: ENTER A: ENTER CD \OS2\AUDIO To install the audio drivers following steps must be taken: 1. Open an OS/2 Window and run the EINSTALL.EXE program on the installation disk by typing "A:EINSTALL." The program first runs ESDETECT.EXE to auto-detect the chip, then calls ESUNINST.EXE to remove old drivers. That program will create a backup of CONFIG.SYS named CONFIG.ESS and remove the audio device lines from CONFIG.SYS. It also creates a backup of MMPM2.INI named MMPM2.ESS and removes the audio drivers information from MMPM2.INI. In addition, it removes any other ESS driver information in COMPLIST.INI. After then, the installation program calls Multimedia Application Install program, MINSTALL.EXE. 2. When Multimedia Application Install program brings up, a check mark beside ES1488 AudioDrive means that item is already selected. To toggle selection, click the mouse on the item. If WinOS2 is installed in the system, you can select WinOS2/Windows Audio support also. If not, make sure that item is not checked. Click the Install button to start the installation. Once the drivers are installed, shutdown OS/2 and reset the computer for the new ES1488 drivers to take effect. 3. If the installation cannot be completed, read the logs EINSTALL.LOG in \MMOS2\INSTALL subdirectory and MINSTALL.LOG in \MMOS2\INSTALL subdirectory or root directory to find out the problem. 4. Since this version of MINSTALL.EXE changes the icons of MIDI player and Digital Video player to that of Digital Audio player in the Multimedia folder, you may want to change them back to the originals. To change the icon of MIDI player, right click MIDI player to bring up the menu. Select Settings, select General, and click the Find... button. In the Start Folder window, enter \MMOS2\INSTALL. Click the Find button and a window of all found icons appears. Select MIDIPLAY.ICO and click OK. Close the MIDI player Settings notebook. For Digital Video player, repeat the above steps but select VIDPLAY.ICO instead. 5. If the MIDI plays are not smooth in WinOS2, you need to change the timer resolution. Edit SYSTEM.INI in your Windows directory. Under [timer.drv] are TIMERMax386Res and TIMERMax286Res. You need to change the values to less than 8 from the default of 10. For additional information about the OS/2 Audio drivers, refer to the RELEASE.TXT file in this directory: a) Boot OS/2. b) Insert this System Program Diskette for OS/2 into drive A: c) Open an OS/2 Window to "A:\OS2\AUDIO\" directory and then edit or print the RELEASE.TXT file. Note: Audio subsystem recording sensitivity control. For audio "16-bit" recordings and "high speed 8-bit mode" recordings the microphone sensitivity can be controlled by the application program. To configure 16-bit or high-speed 8-bit modes of operation, choose a sample rate higher than 22 kHz from the Audio System Sound Attributes. =============== CHAPTER 3. = OS2-BATTERY = =============== IBM 4612 SURE POINT MOBILE COMPUTER: Battery Monitor Program This subdirectory contains information about the OS/2 Battery Monitor Program for 4612 Systems. No additional drivers are required. ================== CHAPTER 10. = OS2-USEABILITY = ================== IBM 4612 SURE POINT MOBILE COMPUTER: Useability USING A PEN ON 4612 SURE POINT MOBILE COMPUTER The following recommendations make it easier to use the pen on the touch screen with the OS/2 Operating System. There are two types of changes you can make to the way OS/2 normally operates to make it easier to use the pen. You can: 1) change the pointing device characteristics, 2) change the visual characteristics of elements on the desktop. Changing the way the pointing device works: To an application program, the pen is just like a mouse so by changing the responsiveness of the mouse, you change the responsiveness of the pen. Most mice today have more than one button but the pen supplied with the portable is like a one button mouse so if you want to use functions that are normally assigned to button two such as dragging objects, you must change the normal settings. In the OS/2 System Setup Folder, find the Mouse Icon. Tap it twice quickly to view the notebook. Select the Mappings Page: The following actions can be performed with button 1 and/or button 2. Change everything to use button 1. Dragging Object Displaying Window List Displaying pop up menus Editing Title Text Select the Timing Page: Double Clicking: Adjust the amount of time between one mouse click and another used by the operating system to determine when one click is made and another. Experiment. Generally it takes longer for a user to tap the screen twice with the pen, then it does to do a double click with a mouse, so this works better when the double-click speed is SLOWER. Tracking speed controls how quickly the cursor follows the pen as you drag it across the screen. Setting this to faster is more usable. Changing the Visual Characteristics of the Desktop: The following controls on the side panel next to the screen are useful. a) The "sunshine" control adjust the brightness of the screen. b) The "motorcar" control switches between reverse and normal video c) The "half full/half empty circle" adjusts the contrast. Note to information developer: Insert pictures in place of my descriptions of the controls. Make the borders around windows larger: In the OS/2 Sysetm Setup Folder, find the Scheme Palette Folder Select the Monochrome Palette icon. Open the icon (by tapping it with the pen twice quickly). Notice the Border Width labelled box. When you set the horizontal and vertical width to larger numbers such as 8 all the borders are larger. This makes it easier to see when the pen is on a border. Wide borders make it easier to move and size objects on your desktop. Note: You can use an Scheme Palette icon to change the border size. The important act is to drop the scheme pallette with the desired border size on the desktop for the effect to take place. Change the Color Scheme used for windows to Monochrome: After adjusting the borders to the desired width (see the previous recommendation), close the monochrome scheme and drag it to the desktop and drop it. This changes the color scheme used for desktop objects. The monochrome scheme is supposed to be easier to see on a monochrome display. You can create your own schemes and experiment to meet your application's needs. Note: Some of the desktop must be visible for you to drop a new scheme palette on it. You must change how the default mouse works before you will be able to drag anything on the desktop with the pen. ******************* SECTION IV. * SOFTWARE ACCESS * ******************* IBM 4612 SURE POINT MOBILE COMPUTER: Software Access R&DS Engineering Software POSS Software Drivers and Service Diskettes are now on the Internet, WWW, BBS and FTP site.
