IBM 4610 SUREMARK POINT OF SALE PRINTER 4610 Printer Model 4 Emulation Support 4610MOD4.TXT March 1999 (C) Copyright 1996,1999 IBM Corporation EMULATING THE IBM MODEL 3 or MODEL 4 POS PRINTERS The 4610 SureMark printer has the capibility to emulate the IBM Model 3 or Model 4 POS printers (RS485 only). To enable the 4610 to emulate the Model 3 or Model 4 printers requires a configuration change. The following procedure shows you where to get the diskette image(s) from our WEB page necessary to make this configuration change. NOTE: Firmware level 01F or later is required to support Model 4 Emulation Mode. Use the 4610 Installation Utility Diskette (V1.04 or later) to update your 4610 firmware (if necessary). Go to the following web page URL: (1) http://www.ibm.com/solutions/retail/ then click "support" (2) From the Terminal Hardware folder select 4610 Software Downloads Then select any one of the following: (a) IBM 4610 Installation Utilities Diskette (V1.04 or later) (all terminals or controllers with a floppy diskette drive) See Enabling/Disabling Emulation - using 4610 Installation Utility Diskette below. - OR - (b) IBM 4693 Terminals Reference/Diagnostic Diskettes (V3.32 or later) (Model 541 with hardfile only) (c) IBM 4693 Terminals Support Diskette (V3.32 or later) (all 4693 Models, accept Model 541 with hardfile) (d) IBM 4694/4695/ISA Service Diskette (V5.11 or later) (4694, 4695 and PC Co. Controllers) The 4610 MOD4.TXT file (this file) is on each of the diskettes. Read this file for Model 3 or Model 4 emulation instructions and configuration procedures. For medialess terminals using 4690 OS the change can be made with the 4690 on-line terminal diagnostics. See Enabling/Disabling Emulation - 4690 On-Line Terminal Diagnostic below. ENABLING/DISABLING EMULATION - USING 4610 INSTALLATION UTILITY DISKETTE Note: 4610 firmware level 01F or later is required to support emulation. 4610 Installation Diskette V1.04 or later is required to use this utility. Use the following procedure with this diskette to set up Model 3 / Model 4 printer emulation. 1) Insert the 4610 Installation Utility disktte in drive A: 2) Power the system unit ON 3) Select "MOD4", when the Menu is displayed TO ENABLE 4a) Select "Enable Model 4 emulation with Offline mode disabled" -OR- "Enable Model 4 emulation with Offline mode enabled" Note: Valid only when emulation is currently disabled. The printer is reconfigured. TO ENABLE 4b) Select "Disable Model 4 emulation" Note: Valid only when emulation is currently enabled. The printer is reconfigured. 5) Enter Ctrl-Alt-Del to re-boot the system. The system Re-IPLs. ENABLING/DISABLING EMULATION - 4690 ON-LINE TERMINAL DIAGNOSTICS Note: 4610 firmware level 01F or later is required to support emulation. 4690 OS level 9740 or greater is required to use this utility. TO ENABLE: (1) To invoke the Utility, press Ctrl S1, 95, Ctrl S2 keying sequence. (2) At the ENTER REQUEST prompt: press 728, Ctrl, S2. This brings up the function to switch the mode of the printer. (3) The following choices are available: (a) If using the printer's integrated MICR reader select TI2 or TI4. Otherwise, select TI1 or TI3. (b) Second Message Activate Model 3/4 Emulation 1=N, 2=Y, S2 Enter 2, to enable Model 3/4 emulation. (c) Third Message: Using EJ in Offline Mode? 1=N, 2=Y, S2 If you select "Y", the printer stores ALL the journal data into its Flash memory. TO DISABLE: (1) Repeat steps 1 and 2 to disable Model 3/4 emulation mode. (A) You are prompted by a single question: Disable Mod 3/4 Emulation 1=N, 2=Y, S2. MODEL 4 EMULATION LIMITATIONS The following limitations must be considered when using the SureMark printer to emulate the Model 3 or Model 4 printer: * Printing the face of checks requires application changes (franking the back of checks should not). * Printing wide documents may require changes. The document station on the Model 4 printer supports 86 characters, the SureMark supports 47 characters. * Journal commands can be ignored or stored in the printer's flash memory. This needs to be decided when the printer is initially configured. During normal operation, journal commands are never sent to the printer since it requires an Electronic Journaling application and has no physical journal station. If the application is set up to send journal data to the printer (for example if the terminal goes offline) the customer can configure the printer to store the data in the printer's flash memory. The electronic journal data needs to be retrieved manually using a sequence of buttons on the printer. The data is printed to the customer receipt tape. See Enabling/Disabling Emulation - 4690 On-Line Terminal Diagnostic below. * There is no top document registration (documents must be inserted from the front). * User defined special characters are not supported. * Emulation mode does not support the Model 4 double byte character set. * Emulation mode is currently supported on 4690 and DOS systems. PRINTING SAVED DATA (1) Press and hold both buttons to enter offline mode. When the printer ready indicator begins blinking, release both buttons. (2) Press and release both buttons again. Notes: (1) If the 4610 printer encounters an error (i.e. the paper runs out or the cover is opened) while printing the data, the data remains intact. The procedure can be restarted using the instructions above. The printer starts printing from the beginning of the stored data, not from where the error was encountered. (2) The printer erases the saved data after all the data is printed.
