instrumentation

The process of inserting instructions into a copy of a program's object code. Rational Purify inserts checking instructions before every memory operation of a program and its associated libraries, using Rational Software's Object Code Insertion (OCI) technology. Purify stores instrumented files in a cache directory and does not overwrite the original program files.

Note: On IRIX, Purify instruments the executable file, then saves the file under a new name.
