• Do not register Unix hosts in WINS Server database

• Turn off “Enable DNS for Windows Resolution”

  • SMB session setup fails faster because NetBIOS name can’t be resolved
    • Otherwise, 4.5 seconds timeout
  • If necessary, you can still use a fully-qualified hostname, e.g., “\\foo.bar.com\share”, for SMB
