October Patch Corrects Flaw in June Patch Oplog Behavior

This Technical Bulletin concerns the following releases and patch bundles:

In some cases, these patches may have been superseded. You may need the appropriate patch that includes and supersedes the listed patches.

In the June Patch Bundle, Rational Engineering changed the way mklabel creates oplog entries for replays. The replay of a mklabel oplog entry is always stored in the database. This is correct behavior.

However, a side effect of this patch is that commands of the form cleartool mklabel -replace LBTYPE version store oplog entries even when the label has not moved. The Patch Bundle to be released in October 1999 corrects this behavior with a fix to defect 35455.

This problem causes no corruption of data or meta-data.

The symptom of the problem is frequent errors of the form

Nonsequential oplog ids detected: expected this oplog....

Prior to the release of the October Patch Bundle, these messages can be eliminated by applying the June Patch Bundle to the server. However, the problem with extra oplog entries is not solved until the October Patch Bundle is applied.

In the meantime, the sites with the following characteristics are hereby alerted:

1.
June Patch Bundle installed on ClearCase client hosts that access replicated VOBs
2.
Frequent users of cleartool mklabel -replace in replicated VOBs
3.
Labels rarely move

Such sites may also see the following problems:

1.
cleartool mklabel -replace is slower
2.
multitool syncreplica -import and -export are slower

These problems are corrected in the October Patch Bundle.
