Difficulty Upgrading from ClearCase for Windows NT V2.1

This Technical Bulletin is directed at sites that have applied Rational Patch 2.1.NT-30 to ClearCase for Windows NT Release 2.1 that wish to upgrade to ClearCase V3.0 or V3.0.1. This includes sites that have upgraded the patched V2.1 to V2.1.1.

This Technical Bulletin is not directed at sites with these characteristics:

Patch 2.1.NT-30 includes a fix for Rational (formerly Pure Atria) Change Request # 10712. When the patch is applied, the journal files (vista.tcf and vista.tjf) in the VOB are updated to a new format but the db_dumper.exe in the VOB database is not updated to recognize the new format. When the VOB host is then upgraded to V3.0 or V3.0.1 there is no longer a valid db_dumper.

The difficulty arises when you attempt to run reformatvob following the installation. You will see messages of the form:

Reformat versioned object base "\\hostname\path-to-vob\vob.vbs"? [no] yes
Dumping database...
Rollforward recovery using "D:\\path-to-vob\vob.vbs\db.reformat\vista.tjf" started Tue Jan 14 16:15:07 1997
Invalid TCF file hdr
*** db_VISTA database error -925 - error in Transaction Journaling File
db_dumper.exe: Error: DBMS error
db_dumper.exe: Error: db_VISTA error -925 (errno == "No such file or directory")
db_dumper.exe: Error: Cannot open database in "D:\path-to-vob\vob.vbs\db.reformat"
db_dumper.exe: Error: Cannot open database in "D:\path-to-vob\vob.vbs\db.reformat":
db_dumper.exe: Error: Error from libdb (1)
cleartool: Error: Could not dump database.
cleartool: Error: Trouble dumping versioned object base "\\hostname\path-to-vob\vob.vbs".

The problem lies with VOBs that were created using ClearCase V2.1 with patch 2.1.NT-30 added.

Resolution

Install one of the following patches, which add a db_dumper.exe that recognizes the new format of the vista files to ccase-home-dir \bin\dumpers. These patches simply add a db_dumper.exe. If you are not sure whether you have VOBs that may be affected, you can install either of these patches listed without concern for any other effects.

For sites upgrading to V3.0:

1. Install patch 3.0.NT-4

2. Run reformatvob

For sites upgrading to V3.0.1:

1. Install patch 3.0.1.NT-1

2. Run reformatvob
