Before you install enterprise search, ensure that you have the required hardware, a supported operating system, required software, and the software that is required for the data sources that you plan to search.
For the most current software and hardware system requirements, see Required and optional software and hardware for OmniFind Enterprise Edition, Version 8.4 (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21240681).
The exact hardware configuration to support a specific environment with satisfactory response time varies, depending on the number of documents to be searched, the search application requirements, server workload, number of users, and other factors. Suggested processor requirements are provided here; for more detailed information about hardware requirements, see Required and optional software and hardware for OmniFind Enterprise Edition, Version 8.4 (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21240681).
The Capacity Planner is a spreadsheet tool that can help you determine disk space and memory requirements. To download the tool, and for information about using it, see Capacity Planner spreadsheet for OmniFind Enterprise Edition (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27006469).
When you install OmniFind(TM) Enterprise Edition, you select a memory model based on the requirements for a typical small, medium, or large configuration. For guidelines on making this selection, see Memory models for enterprise search. Note that this planning information is provided only a guideline.
Enterprise search is supported on the following operating systems. For details about each operating system, including the supported versions and levels, see Required and optional software and hardware for OmniFind Enterprise Edition, Version 8.4 (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21240681).
Enterprise search requires IBM WebSphere(R) Application Server, which you can install or which can be installed automatically by OmniFind Enterprise Edition. For optimum performance and search quality, the following version is recommended. For information about all supported versions of WebSphere Application Server, see Required and optional software and hardware for OmniFind Enterprise Edition, Version 8.4 (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21240681).
To ensure that your custom search applications stay current with changes made to WebSphere Application Server, or to apply fixes for problems that might occur in WebSphere Application Server, periodically check the following Web site for information about interim fixes and cumulative fix packs for WebSphere Application Server: Recommended Fixes for WebSphere Application Server (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27004980).
For supported data sources, the enterprise search installation program installs connectors for WebSphere Information Integrator Content Edition. For other data sources that you want to search, you must install one or more of the following software products. In a multiple server installation, you must install the data source software on the crawler server:
For complete information about the supported data source types and the supported software versions, see OmniFind Enterprise Edition, Version 8.4 supported data sources (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21243971).
Enterprise search requires the IBM Software Development Kit (SDK) for Java 1.4.2, Service Release 5 (SR5), to compile Java applications that are created with the enterprise search application programming interfaces (APIs). The SDK for Java 1.5 is not supported. The SDK for Java is not required to install enterprise search.
The sample search application in the ES_INSTALL_ROOT/samples directory must run in a JRE version 1.4 environment. WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Portal both provide the JRE version 1.4.
To use the information center, enterprise search administration console, and sample search application for enterprise search, the following Web browsers are supported:
On some platforms, other browsers can be used; however, some functionality might not be available for older browser levels or other browser types.
When you install enterprise search, you select a memory configuration that is appropriate for your expected workload.
To optimize performance, different memory configurations are installed for small, medium, and large enterprise search systems.
The memory model that you select does not have to correlate to the number of servers in your enterprise search system. For example, a single server installation might have large memory requirements and a multiple server installation might have small memory requirements across all of the servers.
If you install enterprise search on two or four servers, be sure to specify the same memory model on all servers. Use the following guidelines to determine the appropriate selection for your enterprise. Note that this information is provided as a guideline only; actual requirements depend on your system configuration.
Read the following concepts before you attempt to assess the anticipated size and workload of your system.
