The ibex DomainManager

INTER-IBEX AG developed ibex DomainManager a system that allows you to
automate Notes management in large installations. Key questions like
the following were driving the effort:
- What happens when you have to roll out new database templates across
  your organisation?
- Who takes care of the Notes server in Kuala-Lumpur when it RIPs(crashes)?
- Who installs the new release of Notes on it?
- How do you get the newest software version of a network interface card
loaded on a remote Notes server?
- Who keeps track of all ACL's on all servers in the domain? Is the ACL
in the Toronto branch set correctly?
- How do you prevent somebody from tampering with the access levels on
  that sensitive database?

All of these and more problems are addressed and solved by ibex DomainManager,
a suite of programs and server tasks working together on each Notes server
in an organization. They provide a complete picture of your Notes network.
From a single administrator's workstation, every Notes server can be
monitored, maintained and controlled.

The ibex DomainManager Level 1, Release 1, which will ship in January 1995
consists of four utilities.

ExecuteTask - Controlling and Scheduling: Scheduled and logged execution
of OS/2 tasks on the server: a more flexible instrument than the Program
Document, this utility adds capabilities like extract program to server,
execute & log output of an OS/2 program or command file. That log is
returned either as a mail or as a document in a user definable database.

DatabaseAdministrator - Controlling ACLs, Templates and Administrative
Settings: A Notes database consists of four elements: the design, the
access control list (ACL), the administrative settings and the actual
data. Control the ACLs, adminstrative- and design element inheritance
settings for all servers in your domain from the central
  DatabaseAdministrator repository.
A utility does a scheduled checkup and resets any changed settings to
the definition found in the repository. Contrary to other utilities,
this is not a monitoring tool, but a active control tool. It logs all
differences found, empowering you to detect any tampering with the
above mentioned managed elements in any database in the domain. New
databases are added to the database automatically, with all of their
managed settings. ACLs may be the same throughout the domain or
adapted for each server such that you can implement intricate
  replication schemes.
Because all administrative settings are managed by DatabaseAdministrator
as well, you can control every aspect of replication and availability
  of the database.
The DatabaseAdministrator keeps track of all templates in your domain,
and tracks all design inheritances. It keeps master copies of all
templates in your domain in the repository. It lets you define which
servers implement which templates, and which elements of a database
design are inherited from which template. It finds inheritance
problems. It puts you in control of design changes - it enables you
to assess the impact of proposed changes.

FileManager - Controlling Files and Directories: Control any file or
directory on the server. There is one database per server. This database
contains the complete file structure map of your server. You can either
monitor or manage any file, i.e., you can roll out a certain file to a
  certain server using this database.
If a file is managed, a master copy of it is kept in the database. If
the file changes on the server, it is replaced with the master copy.
Useful to control database and directory links, as well as any
  configuration files (CONFIG.SYS, NOTES.INI, NET.CFG, TCPSTART.CMD, etc.).
FileManager allows you to roll out new releases of Notes and other
components like network drivers without having to physically touch
  the server.

ServerMonitor - Controlling Server Health: As soon as a server RIPs
(crashes), it is automatically rebooted. The RIP files are forwarded
to a database that collects all of these breakdown messages.
Support for Remotely Controlled Server Reboot: You can order any Notes
server to shutdown and reboot using the remote console.
UPS Support: Finally, there is a way to gracefully down your Notes
server in case of a brown out or black out. This includes automatic
restart on timely restoration of commercial power (we support APC
  UPSes with PowerChute for OS/2).
