Mapping casts

Use the Cast function to redefine parts of the input or output model in a graphical data map.

You can create a generic message model, which you can later redefine to a specific model. A wildcard, defined as xsd:any, can be used and then redefined when a more detailed definition is required. For example, you can redefine it by specifying that it is modeled by a specific complex or global type defined in a particular schema file. The process of redefining is called a cast.

For example, you might have a base type of AddressType, and two derived types of USAddressType and CanadianAddressType. Using the Cast function in the Graphical Data Mapping editor, you can cast AddressType to CanadianAddressType.

An alternative for casting an xd:any wildcard is to use a submap transform for a global type that defines the structure that you want the wildcard to have.

A SOAP message is a common example of a generic model in which cast is required to define the business data being exchanged through the SOAP protocol, which defines only the structure of the SOAP envelope and allows you to redefine the Header and Body content. IBM® supplies schema to define standard SOAP messages and the SOAP domain message. For more information, see Message Sets: IBM supplied messages that you can import.
