Preventive measures for data store outages

For an outage of an SIBus database, either anticipated (for maintenance purposes), or unanticipated (due to machine outage), there are certain measures you can take to guarantee the message gets delivered, even without the presence of the data store.

The SIBus messaging layer requires a data store to ensure reliable delivery of messages. Without a data store, messages cannot be persisted across server outages, and therefore guaranteed delivery would not be possible. The sections in this topic describe measures that you can take to enable SIBus recovery from a data store outage.

Automatic server restart on data store outage

When a message engine looses its connection to a data store, the SIBus cannot guarantee that proper message processing will occur. Therefore, it is imperative that the server be restarted as soon as the connection to the data store is lost.

The SIBus provides a custom property that you can set on a messaging engine. If the messaging engine loses its connection to the data store, this custom property enables an automatic restart of the WebSphere Application Server on which the SIB message engine was running when the connection to the data store was lost.

Data store outage on restart

If a data store is unavailable at server start time (either a standard server start or as the result of an automatic restart), the messaging engine will not be able to start. If this occurs, the messaging engine will reattempt the starting procedure at regular intervals. Eventually the attempts will stop (after 15 minutes by default), and the server will be disabled for high availability (HA), meaning that it will no longer be eligible to host a messaging engine.
