Strategy maps are composed of elements organized by their
relationship to each other. An element can be a child, parent, or
sibling of another element.
About this task
There are two ways to add strategy map elements:
- Using the outline view
- Using the diagram view
- To add a map element using the outline view:
- Select an element in the Outline view and click Enter.
A new element is added as a sibling element that shares the same element
type as the previous element. Give the new element a meaningful name
by typing the name and hitting Enter again to commit it. You can change
the element type by clicking on the element icon and selecting the
element type from the drop down list.
- To move an element a level down in the hierarchy, for example
to change a sibling relationship into a parent-child relationship,
select the element to become the child element in the outline view
and enter Tab. The element is indented in the
outline view, and becomes a child element in the diagram view.
- To move an element a level up in the hierarchy, for example
to change a parent-child relationship into a sibling relationship,
select the child element in the outline view and enter Shift-Tab.
The child element is now a sibling to its former parent. This is also
reflected in the diagram view, where the element has moved up one
level in the hierarchy.
- Using the diagram view:
- To add a new map element, hover near the edge of an
existing element in the diagram. A highlighted insertion point appears
indicating the direction of insertion for the new element and the
mouse pointer becomes a
symbol. For example, an highlighted
area below an existing element indicates the insertion point for a
sibling element and a highlighted area to the left or right of an
element indicates the insertion point of a child element. Click to
add a new element in the highlighted insertion point. Give the new
element a meaningful name by typing the name and hitting Enter again
to commit it.
- To change the element type, click the element type icon
and select a new element type from the drop down list.
Results
After being created, the new element is automatically selected
in the map and in the outline view, ready to be renamed and further
specified by additional details such as description, attribute values,
or links to other documents. You can also
move an element to another position
in the map.
