To accommodate the limited storage on smaller devices, you can split lengthy content into manageable parts.
A portlet can produce content that displays in a web browser on a conventional computer but overwhelms the memory available on a smaller device, such as a mobile phone. Multi-Channel Server (MCS) provides an object called a dissecting pane that splits content into portions that are manageable for the target device.
The algorithm that calculates how much markup information should be sent to a device takes the entire markup on the page into account. (Note that a portlet might only be a fraction of the total markup on a page.) This is useful because the portlet is unaware of how much data is being sent to a device on the behalf of the aggregator (for example, banner or nav links), but MCS is aware of such information.
