Implementing Rational PM: Some ways to succeed (continued)
Support
Ensure that adequate RPM support is in place. Designate a local point person for support, because the RPM deployment consultant might not always be available.
Setting expectations
- The full benefits of Portfolio Management and Portfolio Reporting are realized when many or all projects use RPM according to a set of standards. For example, standards and consistency are essential when using scorecards, financial tracking, rank, work tracking, or attributes across projects.
- The best advantages of collaboration are realized when all team members are using RPM, not just the project manager or senior management. Use of RPM needs to be “the way things are done here.”
For implementation to be successful, all projects and all participants need to know and accept that using RPM in a consistent, standardized way is “business as usual” for the project.
