Implementing Rational PM: Some ways to succeed
Teams who have successfully implemented RPM for their projects have contributed the following observations:
The approach
- Start with a small team or group.
- Start with core team members before expanding to all team members.
- Ensure that the team is comfortable with the tool and how it is used on the project before expanding to other stakeholders, such as customers and business partners.
- Lead by example. If the project manager or delivery management is using the tool, others will more likely follow.
- Take a phased approach to deployment. Start with basic functions, such as Document Management and a simple schedule (for example, track phases), with duration-based tracking before using effort-based tracking on a large schedule.
- Leverage existing standards, such as the OPAL Tool Mentors. Then extend the standards where necessary to meet your needs.
