SECURITY
See the online help and printed documentation for information about using FileNET Watermark Server.
Some of the items listed below are for your information, while others describe software issues that will be addressed in future releases.
INSTALLATION
============
- Trace option set during installation
The Watermark Server Installation program sets the Trace Option to OFF. (The value for the key listed below is set to 0.)
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\<ServiceName>\Debug\TraceOptions
(Note that <ServiceName> is the name of the Watermark Server you installed.)
- Watermark Server Conversion
This version of the Watermark Server software does not contain the Watermark Conversion utilities which are required to upgrade prior
versions of the Watermark server.
- Watermark Server and Watermark DiskExtender Installation Order
When installing the Watermark Server with Watermark DiskExtender, you need to install the DiskExtender prior to installing the Watermark
Server. Refer to the Watermark Server Administrator's guide for installation details.
- Watermark Server and DiskExtender service account local and in domain
When running the Watermark Server and DiskExtender, if your service account exists both locally and in the domain, the accounts must share
the same password and be configured identically. (See "Preparing to Install the Watermark Server" in the Watermark DiskExtender
Installation and Integration Guide for details).
- Watermark Server and DiskExtender service account trusted domain support
When running the Watermark Server and DiskExtender in a domain that trusts other domains, the Watermark Service account must be created
in each of the trusted domains with identical passwords. Note: the accounts in the trusted domains do not require any special access
rights or privileges.
GENERAL ISSUES
==============
- Hierarchichal Storage Manager (HSM) Watermark HSM software has been replaced with the Watermark
DiskExtender software.
- Watermark Clients using the Administration Tool Must Upgrade.
If you plan to administer a Watermark Server Release 3.02 from a Watermark Client, the Watermark Client must be upgraded to Release
3.02.
ADMINISTRATION
==============
- Number of Documents Opened by Users for Update
When users work with protected versions of documents, the Watermark Server Administration tool may not report the number of opened
documents correctly. The problem occurs if a user opens a protected version and then saves changes, which creates a new version.
- When a user edits a protected version and saves changes:
The Users tool reports the value 2 in the Open for Write column for this user, even though only one document is open for writing. When the
user closes the document, this value correctly changes to 0.
The Server Info tool increases the value in the Number of documents opened by users for update column by 2, instead of 1. Also, when the
user closes the document, the Server Info tool decreases the value by only 1, which incorrectly indicates that a document remains open
for update. To correct the value in this column, you must stop and restart the Watermark Server.
BACKUP
======
- When backing up a Watermark Server using Hard Disk Storage pleasenote the following information:
If your Watermark Server uses hard disk storage for its primary volset, you will use the Client Administration Tool to backup these
volumes. However, the Client Administration tool currently has the following limitations in regards to backup:
1. If NT Backup is already running on the Watermark Server when the Client Administration tool starts a backup job, the backup WILL NOT be
performed and the Task List will falsly show that the backup job is Done. Before submitting any backup jobs, physically inspect the Watermark
Server computer and insure that NT Backup is not already running.
2. If you have more than one tape device connected to your Watermark Server computer, Watermark Backup will always use the
tape device known to the system as Tape0. (usually the tape device with the lowest SCSI ID) If you wish to use a tape device other
than Tape0, use NT Backup manually to specify which tape device to use and to perform the backups.
- After restoring primary volume(s), the server does not check to see if the restored volumes are out of sync with the Watermark
database and possibly in need of assimilation. When restoring volumes that you suspect were modified since the backup was performed,
assimilate the volumes after restoring then. This is not necessary if restoring all Watermark volumes and the Watermark database from
a unified backup.
- Database Backup
There are known problems backing up the Watermark database using Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 with Service Pack2 or earlier. Service Pack
3 is now a requirement.
DISKEXTENDER
============
- Microsoft NT Server File System Support
Microsoft NT Server supports either NTFS or FAT file systems. Changing your NT boot partition from a FAT volume to an NTFS volume
will necessitate reactivation of the DiskExtender software.
- NT Event Error: "The redirector received an SMB that was too short."
This is an informational alert that reflects an optional field not being utilized by Windows NT and their MS LanMan. This does not
effect data integrity.
REINSTALLING THE WATERMARK SERVER
=================================
- The Uninstall program will not remove Watermark document files in the \WMServer\docs directory. The user must manually remove them to
complete the uninstallation.
- After Uninstalling the Watermark Server the System must be rebooted before attempting a new Install of the Watermark Server Software.
- If you have uninstalled a Release 3.x Watermark Server and you cannot successfully reinstall, it may be because there are remaining
Watermark directories or files. The Uninstall program cannot remove all Watermark Server files when either:
1. The Watermark database has been damaged and is marked as suspect by SQL Server.
2. The Watermark database is open (for example, in SQL Enterprise Manager).
To manually clean out any such remaining files:
1. Follow Windows NT instructions to delete these keys from the Windows Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Watemark\Server
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services<ServiceName>
(Note that <ServiceName> is the name of the Watermark Server you installed.)
2. Run SQL Enterprise Manager and remove the Watermark devices, if they have not already been removed. For instructions, see Chapter 12
"Recovering and Restoring", in the Watermark Server Administrator's Guide. If the database is marked suspect, SQL Server displays an error
message when you try to remove the database devices; you can ignore this message.
3. Delete all WMServer.nnn directories from the storage devices that were assigned to the Primary volset.
4. Restart the server computer.
SECURITY
========
- Taking Ownership of a Watermark Document:
If an NT Administrator needs to take ownership of a Watermark document, this must be done from a machine other than the one on which
the Watermark Server is running. If the Watermark Client is running on the same computer as the Watermark Server, an error indicating
insufficient rights for the operation may be incorrectly returned.
