In addition, go to the FileNet CSS web site for the Capture and Process Compatibility & Dependency information.

3.3 Documentation Installed with the Software

For a list of the documentation supplied with IDM Desktop, see the topic "About documentation" in the IDM Desktop Help (idmdsktp.hlp). If you are upgrading from an earlier release, see the Help files for information on new features in the release. You can review the new features, the installation procedures, and other documentation from the CD before installing the software. The Help files are on the CD in the \Docs folder and are installed with the software.  After installation you can access Help by pressing Start>Programs>FileNet IDM>Help for Users, Help for Administrators, and Help for Developers. Likewise, after installing Open Client, you can access Help by pressing Start>Programs>FileNet IDM>Help for Open Client Users, Help for Open Client Administrators, and Help for Open Client Developers.

Information on the FileNet IDM Desktop and Web Services Toolkit, which has programming information for both IDM Desktop and FileNet Web Services, is contained in the Help for Developers (idmsdk.hlp). The Help for Developers is copied to an IDM Desktop workstation during installation if you select and install the optional Developer Files in Setup. Developer Help is always installed with FileNet Web Services and Open Client. This Help file contains reference information for the IDM objects' methods, properties, and events, as well as descriptions of the object model and "Working with..." examples. To begin developing with the Toolkit, open the FileNet IDM Desktop and Web Services Toolkit Help for Developers by clicking on Start > FileNet IDM > Help for Developers, and review the topics: Using Type Libraries in Visual Basic and Developing with Visual C++.

About the Software CDs

IDM Desktop 3.3 is delivered on a single CD. Likewise, FileNet Web Services 3.3 is delivered on a single CD and includes both web server and web client software. Open Client, an optional add-on to Web Services, is on the FileNet Web Services CD. Important Notes about Installing and Upgrading

Exit from all programs including virus protection programs before installing or upgrading FileNet software.

If you are installing from a network drive, map the network drive so you can start Help from Setup.

Reboot immediately before and immediately after any installation or upgrade. The reboot after an installation or upgrade registers the new DLLs. This can take several minutes. Please be patient and wait for the registration to complete.

You must configure an ODBC Data Source for each CS database server.

Preference files created in 3.2 (or any earlier version) cannot be imported after installing or upgrading to the 3.3 software. However, an upgrade upgrades 3.2 preferences to the 3.3 level.

Installing Web Services

See the FileNet Web Services Administrator's Help for information on installing and upgrading FileNet Web Services, the FileNet Web Services Client, and Web Services Application Integration. See the Open Client Administrator’s Help for information on installing Open Client.

Quiet installation and upgrade (from 3.2 only) are provided for IDM Desktop, IDM Desktop Application Integration, FileNet Web Services Client packages, and FileNet Web Services Application Integration. FileNet Web Services and Open Client are not upgradeable; you must uninstall any previous release and then install the 3.3 software.

During the installation of FileNet Web Services, if you click on the Help button, an error message may appear saying the system cannot locate the Help file admin_w.hlp. If this occurs, use the Browse button on the message dialog to locate the file, which is in the root directory of the CD.

Installing Open Client

On Windows 2003, you must activate ASP.NET after installing .NET. (On Windows 2000, installing .NET activates ASP.NET automatically.)

MSJVM or Alternate Configuration

If you obtain Microsoft Windows XP after February 2002 or obtain another version of Windows after September 2004, Windows will not include the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM).

By default, the MSJVM is used for remote scripting by the FileNet Web Services Client and FileNet Web Services Application Integration.

If a web client machine has a version of Microsoft Windows that does not include the MSJVM, you have two options:

To download and install the Microsoft JVM, if needed for Windows XP

  1. From the FileNet FTP site for patches, download Msjavx86.exe to the PC where you plan to install the Microsoft VM.
  2. Open the JVM folder, and then double-click Msjavx86.exe to run the executable file.
  3. This step is REQUIRED, not optional. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Update. Install any fixes for the Microsoft VM that Windows Update detects.

Installing and Upgrading IDM Desktop

Silent installation facilities are provided for installing and upgrading IDM Desktop. It is not necessary to remove your Oracle ODBC configuration prior to upgrade.

IDM Desktop platforms are qualified with and without a browser installed.

If you use the Notes-based Panagon Integration Administration database, the database path and filename must be "<root Notes data subdirectory>\FileNETNotesPanagonIntegration\NPIAdmin.Nsf". The template for this database is available in the IDM Desktop installation path (and in the \Maintenance folder on the software CD). If you copy the file from the CD, you must remove the read-only file attribute in order to create and save data in the database.

IDM Desktop includes the following third-party products:

Uninstalling IDM Desktop and Web Services

Delete the ODBC Data Sources before uninstalling IDM Desktop. (FR 47417)

Deploying with Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS)

SMS 2.0 SP4 can be used to install IDM Desktop 3.3 and to upgrade from IDM Desktop 3.2.0a or 3.2.0b.  You can also install patch releases for IDM Desktop 3.3 via SMS. After installing IDM Desktop 3.3, import the IDM Preference files by creating another SMS package. See the topic "Set up SMS" in the IDM Desktop Administrator's Help for information on silent installation commands. Currently, IDM Desktop does not support a silent mode process for adding IDM Desktop components, or for uninstalling the product. However, you can use SMS Installer 2.0 to accomplish these tasks.

SMS installation of server-side Web Services software is not supported.

SMS can be used to install or upgrade (from 3.2.0a or 3.2.0b only) any of the Web Services Client options (Viewer, Viewer2, and FnControls).

Installing and Upgrading Web Services Application Integration

A user can download Web Services application integration from the download page. To navigate to the download page:

  1. Connect to a Web Services 3.3 site.
  2. Click the Utilities button on the IDM bar (the vertical bar along the left edge), and then click the Download button.
  3. Select Microsoft Application Integration setup.
  4. Click Continue with download, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Web access to CS 5.3 Using Oracle 9i Client Libraries

Because of a problem in the Oracle software, authentication will fail for all web clients who access CS 5.3 libraries using the web server's Oracle 9i client libraries. Web administrators must use the following workaround to grant User privileges to the Oracle home directory:

  1. On the web server, log on to Windows as a user with Administrator privileges.
  2. Launch Windows Explorer from the Start Menu and navigate to the ORACLE_HOME directory.
  3. Right-click on the ORACLE_HOME folder and choose Properties.
  4. In the Properties dialog, click the Security tab.
  5. Click Authenticated Users in the Name list (on Windows XP the Namelist is called "Group or user names").
  6. Uncheck the "Read & Execute" box (in the Allow column) in the Permissions list (on Windows XP the "Permissions" list is called "Permissions for Authenticated Users").
  7. Check the "Read & Execute" box. This is the box you just unchecked.
  8. Click Apply.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Reboot.

Important Notes for Developers

See the Compatibility and Dependency document for the supported development environments, and see the Release Notes for information on known problems that affect API calls. In addition, note the following:

Downloading Patches

After you install Web Services or IDM Desktop, check the FileNet Customer Support site for the latest information and patches (also called hot fix packs). You download patches from a FileNet FTP site. Each patch includes a readme file describing the fixes and other changes in the patch.

  1. Go to the FileNET Worldwide Support web site.
  2. Log in. If you have a valid account, enter your user name and password, and then click Login. Your user name and password are case-sensitive. If you need an account or if you require assistance, click the appropriate link on the page. To create an account:
  3. Navigate to patches.
  4. Click IDMdesk-web.html.
  5. Refresh the page to make sure you can see all available patches.
  6. Select the most recent patch for 3.3.
  7. Review the readme. If you would be affected by a known problem, the readme will recommend a course of action.
  8. Click a patch to begin the download.
