Set classification properties

  1. If you need to specify a security classification guide or source document on which the classification is based, click Derived From.
    • To add a security classification guide, click Add New, then browse to and select the desired security classification guide.
    • To add a source document, click Add New, then enter a description of the source document in the text box.
    • To remove a security classification guide or source document, click the corresponding box in the Remove column, and click Remove.
    • After you finish adding or removing the desired classification guides and source documents, click Accept.
Note: After you specify a value for Derived From, the following fields might be automatically populated: Initial Classification, Current® Classification, Reasons for Classification, Declassify On Date, Declassify on Event, and Exemptions.
  2. If you did not enter a value for Derived From, you must specify a value for Initial Classification by selecting Top Secret, Secret, or Confidential from the list.
Note: The Current Classification defaults to the same value as the Initial Classification if you have clearance to see items at the level of the initial classification. Otherwise, you must specify a value at the level of your security clearance.
  3. If you did not enter a value for Derived From, click Reasons for Classification.
    • Click Add New Value.
    • Click Active or Deprecated, and select an appropriate value.
    • Click Accept.
    • Add as many values as needed.
    • To remove a value, highlight the value, and click the red minus (-) icon (Remove Selected Items).
    • When finished, click Accept.
  4. In the Classification Agency field, enter the name of the agency that is currently managing the physical record (for example, Department of Defense).
  5. Complete any of the remaining optional fields.
    • Click the calendar icon to set a date. Declassify on Date is set automatically based on 25 years after the publication date entered in the Set Properties step.
    • Declassify On Events and Downgrade On Events open screens where you enter text and click the yellow plus (+) icon (Add Item) to move it to the Current Values field. You can enter more than one text string. To remove an item, select it and click the red minus icon.
    • Entering or changing some information might require information in other fields. For example, if you extend the 25-year Declassify On Date, you must enter an exemption. If you enter Downgrade On Events, you must provide downgrade instructions. If you haven't entered all required information, a message tells you what is required when you click Finish.
  6. Click Finish after you enter the required information.
