Accessibility features
- Keyboard navigation when using JAWS
- The Workplace XT application includes Java applets; in order for JAWS to process text
on a Java applet, you must first
install Java Access Bridge.
- Virtual PC Cursor mode
- In Virtual PC Cursor mode, the JAWS screen reader intercepts standard
keyboard navigation keystrokes. If you have difficulty with specific
keys when JAWS is enabled, preface the navigation keystrokes with Insert+3.
For example, to open a document that has click focus, press Insert+3,
then press Enter.
- Pressing Enter to activate the default
action
- On a user interface where you can press Enter to
activate the default action after pressing Enter to
make a selection, JAWS causes the second Enter to
be ignored. To activate the default action, you must tab to the button
corresponding to the default action and then press Enter.
For example, when you add a document, you have the option to select
a document class. After tabbing to the desired class, you can press Enter to
select the class. When not using JAWS, you can press Enter again
to activate the OK button and accept your selection.
When using JAWS, you must first tab to the OK button
before pressing Enter again.
- JAWS Links List
- When using the JAWS Links List, two entries
are displayed for each item in the list view.
- Select the entry ending with "-select" to select the item. This
allows you to perform actions from the Actions menu
on the selected item.
- Select the entry ending with "-open" to open or view the item.
- Tools and Actions menus
- When opening the Tools and Actions menus,
JAWS selects the first item in the menu and does not read the content.
To have JAWS read the content, press Insert+Tab and
the text next to the current cursor position is read. After navigating
through menu items once or twice using Tab or Ctrl+Down
arrow, JAWS starts reading.
- Filtered choice lists
- If the choice lists allows you to filter the list based on your
input, the screen reader announces the first available choice in the
list. You can use the arrow keys to navigate through the list, and
the space bar to select an item from the list.
