Names

You can specify the Document Name, Folder Name, and Custom Object Name preferences for each object store. These preferences determine the value displayed as the name of items in a specific object store. While you can choose any property, you typically should choose a system property, denoted by an asterisk (*), or a property that is unique or nearly unique, such as Title, rather than a property that could have many duplicate values.

Document Name

The Document Name preference selects the document property that identifies the document. In the application, this value is the text link that retrieves the document. In the designer applications, this is the property in the Name field. The default property is Document Title. All views include this value. While you can choose any system property, consider choosing a property that applies to all document classes. If you choose a property that does not apply to a particular document class, documents in that class display "Not defined."

The following example shows a list view where the Title column displays the value set by the Document Name preference.

List view example, Title column = Document Name preference property value.

Folder Name

The Folder Name preference selects a folder property for the link text in the application that opens the folder. The default property is Folder Name.

Users of integrated applications cannot create folders unless the Folder Name preference is set to FolderName, and the FolderName property is valid.
