Search result processing

There are several ways of processing the search results of a background search sweep.

Here are the main ways of doing so:

Inspect

You can inspect the search results on the Search Results tab of the sweep. Sweeps are listed in the navigation pane of the administration console under the following folder: Sweep Management > Background Search Sweeps.

Search

You can search the results with interactive queries on the database table with the results. The search result classes are listed in the navigation page of the administration console under the following folder: Data Design > Background Search Result Classes. For the table name, see the table definition property in the General tab.

For information about running interactive queries, see Finding objects with interactive queries.

Export

You can download the results as a CSV file for use in spreadsheets or other applications. This feature requires that you first install the Reporting Enablement Extensions add-on.

To download the file, click the Download CSV button on the Search Results tab of the sweep.

Restriction: The tab displays the Download CSV button only if the Generate a CSV file option is selected in the sweep template.
Here are some possible alternatives to the Download CSV button functionality:
  • Direct load. You can directly load the data from the search results table into a spreadsheet by using a data source such as a native database provider.
  • Event subscription. You can create an event subscription that fires when the background search sweep completes. In the event handler, your custom code exports the data from the search results table into a CSV file. An event subscription is the same mechanism that drives the Download CSV button functionality. For more details about how you might do something similar, see Reporting Base Class and Subclasses.
Important: Event handler processing is subject to transaction timeout limits.
  • Native tools. You can use your native database commands for exporting data from a table to a CSV file. Consult your database documentation.
Access

You can directly access the results with reporting tools such as IBM® Cognos® Business Intelligence.

For OLAP-based reporting tools such as Cognos Business Intelligence, your background search query can generate the following types of tables for an OLAP cube:
  • Fact. The fact table is the search results table. You can use aggregation functions in your query to aggregate data in the fact table.
  • Dimension. You can code custom search functions to write data to dimension tables. The use of these search functions in your query would permit the query to create dimension tables automatically.
