Setting a work area to optimize text extraction performance

The text extraction process converts a document to text for purposes of indexing documents and stores the information in the temporary directory. Optimize text extraction performance by setting the temporary directory to a local directory on your operating system. Using a remote directory for text extraction can be much slower.

About this task

The temporary directory is heavily used by the text extraction process. The temporary files produced by text extraction have a short life and get deleted as soon as the indexing of the submitted documents is done. Consider using a faster disk such as a RAID disk array or RAM disk to improve text extraction speeds. In general, the performance of a RAM disk is faster than other forms of storage media.
Important: This procedure sets the work area for the text extraction that Content Platform Engine performs. IBM® Content Search Services performs text extraction for any documents that are submitted to it by IBM Content Collector.

Procedure

To set the temporary work area for text extraction:

  1. Accessing subsystem configuration properties. Access the properties for the appropriate subsystem.
  2. In the Text Search Subsystem tab, enter the value for the Temporary work area field.
  3. Save your changes.
