Preventing automatic opening of Microsoft Office documents (Office 2013)

To publish Microsoft Office 2013 documents without user intervention, you must prevent Office from automatically opening documents.

Any document or template that you place in an Office Startup or XLStart folder is automatically opened when you start the corresponding Office application. These folders are created when you install the Office product or launch the application the first time.

To prevent automatic processing:

  1. Use Windows Explorer to locate the startup folders:
    • \Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\Startup
    • \Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\XLStart
    • \Users\FNRE_Admin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
    • \Users\FNRE_Admin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart
Tip: For Microsoft Office 64-bit, use \Program Files instead of \Program Files (x86).
  2. If these folders exist and contain any files, move or delete the files.
