A workflow definition contains a main workflow map and
possibly one or more submaps with steps and routes. To display a map,
select the name of the map from the map toolbar.
The illustration below shows the Workflow map and the Reject submap.
The ReviewReject step is a submap step that calls the Reject submap.

Each step on a map represents a specific activity or task in the
workflow. The following types of steps represent different types of
activities:
- A General step represents an activity assigned to a participant
or to a work queue. A general step includes instructions for the participants,
the data fields, and attachments that are accessible at the step,
responses that the participants can select, and other options. Process
Tracker uses symbols to indicate which General steps are active, which
are locked, and which are completed.
To view the properties associated
with a step, click the step or route on the workflow map.
- For all steps, including a step that is completed or has not been
visited, design information is available such as parameters, assignments,
and milestones that display in the properties area.
- For a step with active work items, the current values of the fields,
workflow groups, and attachments display.
- A System step represents one or more activities performed by Process
Engine. The provided system functions perform logic-control and other functionality
in the workflow, including setting time limits at specific points
in the workflow, and setting up check points where data can be preserved
if you need to roll back to a known condition. The system functions
can display on the map as either a system step or as the specific
system function.
To view the name and parameters of the system function,
select the system step and view the information in the Properties
pane.
- A Submap step represents a call to another workflow map in the
workflow definition. Use of submaps makes the workflow definition
more modular and easier to understand.
To view another map in this
workflow, select from the list of maps on the map toolbar.
- A Component step represents a call to an external subsystem. You
can view the name and properties of the component.
Each route on the map defines the path from one step to the next.
There can be one or more routes from a step. A route can be defined
with an expression that must be satisfied for that route to be taken,
or it can be defined as "true". Select the route in the
workflow map to view the condition, if any.
To view the properties of the workflow, select the Workflow tab
in the Properties pane.
Tip: While a workflow is running, the information changes
as participants open and complete their work. To see the most current
information available, click Refresh on the
toolbar.
