Defining simulation resources

A resource specifies one or more human users or other resources available to do the work. Using the Resources tab, you associate actual users assigned to steps in the workflow with your shifts and job classifications. You can also define additional resources, such as printers, vehicles, and other people, that do not exist in the workflow definition but contribute to the process.

To define resources for the simulation:

  1. If necessary, select Scenario Properties on the Simulation Designer toolbar, and click the Resources tab.
  2. On the Resources tab, do one of the following:
    • Select a name of a user, group, or workflow group in the Resources list.
    • Click Add on the Resources toolbar to define additional resources not represented in the workflow definition.

Enter a name for the resource. The name must be unique.

  3. For the selected resource, specify a Resource Type.
    • Use Participant for an individual user. The quantity is limited to 1.
    • Use Workgroup to indicate one or more users, then enter the quantity. The maximum quantity that you can enter is 999999.
    • Use System to indicate other resources, such as printers.
  4. Specify the cost per hour for the resource for the assigned shift.
The maximum cost per hour that you can enter is 999999999.9999. (You can enter up to four fractional digits.)
Tip: If a workgroup is assigned as the participant for a step, the cost per hour represents the average cost for one participant in the workgroup.
Attention: Shifts and jobs must be defined before you can specify the following items for this resource.
    1. Under Assigned Shifts, specify shifts for the selected resource—click Modify to add one or more previously defined shifts.
    2. For each shift, select the job that this resource performs for this shift. A resource can perform only one job per shift.
    3. Specify Job Efficiency for this resource. The job efficiency determines the simulated duration for any step assigned to this resource.

For example, in a scenario where the 'Review report' step has an expected duration of two hours (set in Duration on the Step tab), you would usually set the job efficiency to 100% for the Reviewer resource who process this step. This setting maintains the expected duration of 2 hours in the simulation. However, if you set the job efficiency of Reviewer to 50%, the duration becomes 4 hours in the simulation.
