Best practices for federated Content Integrator documents

There are several best practices for working with documents that are federated by using IBM® FileNet® CFS for Content Integrator.

Avoid altering the current version of a document in the target Content Platform Engine object store

Altering the state of the current version of a federated document in the Content Platform Engine object store causes future import of the version series to fail. Do not perform the following state changes on the current version of a document if import from the source repository might be required again:

Avoid changing properties in the target object store

If property values are changed on a document in the target Content Platform Engine object store, those changes might be overridden when you import the document again.

Updates to properties in the target repository are controlled by the Date Last Modified document property. If the Date Last Modified property is mapped to a source property, the date value of the source document is compared to the Date Last Modified property of the target document, and the target property values are overridden if the source values are more recent.

If the Date Last Modified property is not mapped to a source property, the target property values are always overridden by the source values if there are changes to the source document after the previous federation run. This behavior can also be achieved by setting the Federation Update Has Priority property of the IBM Content Integrator fixed content device to True (the default value for this property is False). When this property is set to True, source properties always overwrite target properties regardless of the outcome of the Date Last Modified property value comparison.

Important: Because the Date Last Modified property applies to the entire document, all properties on the target document are overwritten by the mapped properties from the source document if even one property was modified on the source document more recently than the most recent property update on the target document.

Avoid properties defined as Required that are not copied to the reservation

The content federation import agent does not support versioning documents that contain property values that are both required and are not copied to reservation.  Do not define properties as Value Required and not Copy to Reservation if you work with a source repository that supports versioning.

Avoid deleting source document

Because Content Platform Engine does not have control over the content in source repositories, and deletes are not propagated from a source repository to Content Platform Engine, deleting a document from a source repository breaks the federated document in Content Platform Engine.

Avoid altering security on source document

Do not change security on a source document in a way that prevents Content Platform Engine from reading, locking down, or deleting the document.
