Content cache areas can be shared among sites, virtual servers, or individual servers.
Sharing cache areas among geographically close servers avoids latency delays that could affect the
content retrieval performance.
About this task
Unless you explicitly configure the content cache area for a specific site, the content cache
settings are inherited from the domain to the site. A best practice is to assign a content cache
area to a site. For best results, do not assign a cache area to a domain unless you are using
only a single site and want to assign the cache area to specific virtual servers or individual
servers within that site.
Restriction: If you assign a cache area to a domain, the cache area is used by
default for all future sites that you create in that domain. You can override the cache area for
a site by following the instructions in
Assigning a content cache area.
Procedure
To configure a content cache area:
- Access the site content cache information in the administration
console:
- In the domain navigation pane, select the domain.
- In the domain details view, click the Content Cache Subsystem
tab.
- Optional: Set the value for the Maximum number of cache elements field.
- Maximum number of cache elements
- Designates the number of content elements whose state information is kept in memory. The
default value is 10000.
A content element's state information includes the following
information:
- The creation date and time of the content object
- The last modified time of the content element in the cache area
- The state of the element
The approximate size of each content element's state and identification information is
150 bytes. When setting a custom value, note that setting the value too high uses more
server memory to store the content elements' state information, and setting the value too
low results in additional disk access to retrieve the state information from the content
cache elements.
Note: Altering the default value can have an impact on system
performance. The higher the number, the more server memory is needed to store the content
element's state information; the lower the number, the more disk access is needed to
retrieve the state information from the content cache elements.
- Set the Content cache area value.
Important: As a best practice, set the content cache area for the domain to
<None>. You can assign the content cache area to a site
later.
