Maintaining storage area integrity

You can use the Content Consistency Checker tool to perform the following tasks on a storage area:

When to check the consistency of a storage area

Perform the appropriate consistency check of a storage area after any of the following events:

Consistency check Event Result
Validate the storage area. After restoring a storage area from backup media. Validation detects any missing files or files with out-of-date security settings.
Validate the storage area. After restoring an object store (including the database and file storage areas) from backup media. Validation determines if there are any documents without corresponding file storage-based content files, or files with inconsistent security settings.
Validate the storage area. If users are unable to view the content of a document when the content is stored in a file storage area, even when they have view-content permissions on the document. Validation determines if the file is missing or if the security settings on the file are incorrect.
Validate the storage area. After moving a file storage area to another location. Validation verifies that all files were moved successfully.
Update the statistics. When the storage area statistics appear to be incorrect and the contents of the storage area are known to be valid. Updating the statistics ensures that the storage area statistics are accurate.

Security requirements

To perform a consistency check, you must have permissions to read the file storage area you want to check. You do not need read permissions to read the documents stored in the file store. By default, object store administrators have access to all objects in the system, enabling them to perform the check. If you change the default security settings, you can affect who has permissions to run Content Consistency Checker.
