Defining simulation jobs

A job defines an activity that corresponds with work in a specific queue.

If your system allows default entries (Tools menu, Preferences option), a job (Default_Job) is already defined, and all queues are selected for the Default_Job. You can modify the queues for the default job and you can create additional jobs as appropriate for your simulation.

To define the jobs for the simulation:

  1. If necessary, select Scenario Properties on the Simulation Designer toolbar, and click the Jobs tab.
  2. On the Jobs tab, select Default_Job or click Add on the Job toolbar, then enter a name for the job. The name must be unique in the scenario.
  3. With the job name selected, select one or more workflow queues for which that job is responsible.
  4. Reorder the queues as appropriate using the Raise Priority and Lower Priority buttons. The queues with the higher priority are processed first.

For example, for a workflow that processes medical billing, you might have two types of clerks, ,Jr_clerk and Sr_clerk, who handle three steps in the workflow that are assigned to work queues for processing:

    • Enter_info_Q
    • Verify_processing_Q
    • Resolve_problems_Q.

Both types of clerks can handle the first two activities, but only Sr_clerk handles Resolve_problems_Q. In addition, some steps in the workflow are routed to specific participants. So each participant associated with these jobs can also process their inbox. Therefore, you would set up jobs as follows:

    • Add Jr_clerk job.
    • Select queues Inbox, Enter_info_Q and Verify_processing_Q.
    • Add Sr_clerk job.
    • Select queues Inbox, Enter_info_queue, Verify_processing_Q, and Resolve_problems_Q.
    • Reorder the queue list for Sr_clerk to Inbox, Resolve_problems_Q, Verify_processing_Q, and Enter_info_Q.
Tip: On the Shifts tab or the Resources tab, you associate actual participants with their jobs relative to the shift they work on.
