IBM FileNet P8, Version 5.2.1

Content Engine Web Service

This topic describes how to upgrade Content Engine Web Service (CEWS) applications to run in a P8 5.x environment. Note that the version 4.0 WSDL is the most current WSDL in the P8 5.x environment. The version 3.5 WSDL, which was deprecated in the IBM® FileNet® Content Manager 5.0.0 release, is no longer supported.

Upgrading 4.x Applications to run in a 5.x Environment

A 4.5.x CEWS application requires no updates to run in a 5.x environment, unless your application uses Direct Internet Message Encapsulation (DIME) attachments. Deprecated since the 4.5.0 release, DIME support was removed from the 5.1 release. Replace DIME to use the Message Transmission Optimization Mechanism (MTOM) as the attachment encoding format. For information on how to modify your application, see Upgrading 4.0.x Applications to run in a 4.5.x Environment using the 4.0 Endpoints, located in the V4.5.1 documentation.

If your CEWS application uses Microsoft Web Service Enhancements (WSE) 3.0, note that WSE support was deprecated in the 5.0 release. You need to consider an appropriate time to upgrade to Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0, which includes the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) built-in component. Currently, when operating in a .NET environment, the Content Engine Web Service can be used from either an application based on Microsoft WSE 3.0, or an application based on WCF. WCF-based applications are supported starting in Content Engine version 4.5.1 Fix Pack 2. Older releases of Content Engine support only WSE-based clients. Since WCF is Microsoft's strategic direction, all CEWS applications will eventually need to convert to WCF. However, converting an application to WCF should be postponed as long as there is still a need to use older Content Engine releases which do not support WCF.

Upgrading 4.0.x Applications to run in a 5.x Environment

Follow the Upgrading 4.0.x Applications to run in a 4.5.x Environment using the 4.0 Endpoints procedure, located in the V4.5.1 documentation.

Upgrading 3.5.x Applications to run in a 5.x Environment

Follow the Upgrading 3.5.x Applications to run in a 4.5.x Environment using the 4.0 Endpoints procedure, located in the V4.5.1 documentation.
