Defining operations

A function within an application might require input values or provide output values. To identify the values that are needed to use the function, you must define an operation that corresponds to the specific function. The operation must be created in the queue that is accessed by the application that contains the function.

About this task

To provide custom processing in a workflow, you can create applications that are used to complete specific steps. The applications can be step processors that are used directly by workflow participants or automated processes that complete steps without participant intervention. If a function within an application requires input from or provides output to the workflow, values corresponding to the input and output parameters must be defined in any workflow steps that use the function.

To identify the parameter values that are needed to use a specific function in a step, you can use the administration console to define an operation that corresponds to each function. Operations are defined on the workflow queues, such as the work queue, user queue, or component queue, that the application that contains the function accesses when the workflow is running.

For each operation that you create, you must define parameters that determine how the step processor uses the operation. The parameters that you specify must correspond to the properties defined for a step processor that is processing work items in the selected queue. The details of an operation definition must match those same details in the function definition. To use a function at a step in a workflow, in the step definition the workflow author selects the appropriate work queue or participant and the corresponding operation, and then assigns values to each required parameter.

Procedure

To define an operation:

  1. Access the Operations tab in the administration console:
    1. In the domain navigation pane, select the object store.
    2. In the object store navigation pane, click the Administrative > Workflow System > Isolated Regions folder and click the isolated region that you want to modify.
    3. Click the workflow queue folder that you want to modify. For example, click the Component Queues folder and click the component queue in which you want to define an operation.
    4. In the details pane, click the Operations tab.
  2. Click New.
  3. Specify a name for the operation and specify the parameters for the operation.
