Launch step - general properties

The Launch step is the first step in the workflow. The user who launches the workflow completes any tasks specified in this step as part of starting the workflow.

You do not specify a participant for the launch step because any user with appropriate access privileges can launch a workflow.

You can rename the Launch step but you cannot change its type, copy it, or delete it.

To specify Launch step properties:

  1. On the workflow map, click the launch step to select it and then click the General tab to specify the step properties.
  2. Enter a name for the step.
  3. In the list of available parameters, select a field, attachment, or workflow group, then click the right arrow to add the item to the list of parameters for this step.

If an initiating attachment was specified for this workflow, it will appear in the list of parameters for this step. This parameter must have Read/Write access.

Note that if this workflow will be launched automatically using events specified in workflow subscriptions (Workplace or Workplace XT), those data fields must be parameters for the launch step.

TIP If a field, attachment, or workflow group you want to use is not displayed, do one of the following:

    • Select the check boxes next to the Available Parameters list to show the data fields, attachments, workflow groups, and XML fields defined in the Workflow Properties.
    • Examine the display preferences (Preferences on the Settings menu) to be sure that any items inherited from a base workflow are displayed.
    • If the item you need has not yet been defined, open Workflow Properties and create the item.

TIP As an alternative to selecting the parameters in each step, you can specify the data fields, attachment specifications, and workflow groups for all of the steps in the workflow using the Field usage option in the Workflow Properties.

  4. Under Access Rights, specify the launch user's access to the parameter.
  5. Under Prompt, you can optionally enter a short description for the current parameter.

In Workplace or Workplace XT, the prompt appears as hover help for the parameter on the launch processor page.

  6. Select a step processor.

The IBM® FileNet-provided step processors are designated in the list with (FileNet®). The list of available launch processors might include custom processors if an application developer has created any. If necessary, work with your application developer to determine the appropriate selection.

TIP The default launch processor, Approval Launch HTML (FileNet), displays any parameters (data fields, attachments, and so forth) on the initial page. The other FileNet-provided launch processor, Launch HTML (FileNet), displays parameters on separate pages.

  7. Enter instructions for the user who will launch the workflow.
