IBM Tivoli Storage Manager options files

Content Platform Engine creates or updates the IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager options files whenever a fixed content device is created or altered. The shared options files define connection information for one or more IBM Tivoli Storage Manager servers and must be accessible to every Content Platform Engine instance in the domain.

The shared IBM Tivoli Storage Manager options files are in the directory that is referenced by the Configuration files share parameter defined for the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager fixed content device. The following files are critical to the operation of the Content Platform Engine and must not be deleted. Include these files in all system backups and disaster recovery procedures.

Options files for UNIX servers

Each UNIX server where the Content Platform Engine is running must have the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client software installed. Within the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client installation folders there is a dsm.sys file, which is used by all IBM Tivoli Storage Manager clients on that server, including the Content Platform Engine, to connect to the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. On UNIX servers, the DSMI Directory property of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager fixed content device must be set to the location of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client software directory that contains the dms.sys file (for example, /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin).

The Content Platform Engine maintains a shared version of the dsm.sys file in the folder that is defined by the Configuration files share parameter of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager fixed content device. The shared file is named IBMFileNetP8.dsm.sys. Each Content Platform Engine instance merges the changes it makes (and changes that other Content Platform Engine instances make) to the shared dsm.sys file into the local dsm.sys file on the server. This action keeps all local dsm.sys files in sync with the Content Platform Engine shared dsm.sys file.

You might want to mount the shared options file folder with the option uid=username, where username is the Content Platform Engine user account. Without this option, Content Platform Engine can create the shared options files successfully on the mounted folder; however, the files might not grant the user full control access, and Content Platform Engine cannot write the files.

Options files for Windows servers

On Windows servers, each IBM Tivoli Storage Manager fixed content device has a separate options file that is in the folder referenced by the configuration files share property. The options file name consists of the object identifier of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager fixed content device (with the leading and trailing brackets removed) followed by the .opt file extension. On a Windows server, an additional file, IBMFileNetP8.opt, is generated. This file is typically empty.
