Restrictions on direct database access

Direct access to the object store database occurs in a non-Content Platform Engine context. The following types of direct access are not supported under any circumstance: directly updating or deleting data in the database or issuing SELECT statements that lock rows.

Typically, you indirectly access an object store by using either the Content Engine API or an application that is written against the Content Engine API. The Content Engine API is the means by which you retrieve and update data in a secure, object-oriented manner. Also, the Content Engine API is guaranteed to be compatible across Content Platform Engine releases. In contrast, direct database access bypasses all Content Platform Engine security checking and object model support. Any custom views that you create to facilitate direct access might require updates with each new Content Platform Engine release.
