Message severity levels

Every message in the log file has an associated severity level. The messages that are logged have the same or higher level than the configured log level. For example, the default log level is INFO, which means that messages for the following severity levels are logged: INFO, WARNING, and SEVERE.

The following table shows the severity levels in descending order of severity:

Severity level Type of information in message Examples of information in message
SEVERE Errors and exceptions that occur during the execution of the server. Typically, the message includes detailed information with the stack trace that can help identify the cause of the problem.  
WARNING Mild problems that might require the attention of an administrator.
  • A missing value for a setting with a default value
  • The truncation of a document during indexing
INFO Information that is generated during system operation.
  • Server configuration
  • The state of server startup
FINE Details for debugging purposes.
  • Request headers
  • Parsed queries
FINER More details.
  • The results of document parsing during indexing
FINEST Includes all printouts, entries, and exits from various functions.
