Creating a document subclass

Before you can add documents to Content Platform Engine, you must define custom document classes in the object store.

About this task

A document class is the root class for documents and it is created when you create an object store. You use a document class to define the properties of a document and to organize documents by type in an object store. A document class is commonly assigned as the default class for a document. A document class also determines where the document content is stored.

You use the predefined Document class to create custom subclasses for your application. You can assign custom properties to these subclasses based on the required values that are stored with the documents. For example, you might have a Contracts document class with Contract Type, Date, and Company Name properties assigned to it. Additional system properties such as Creator and Document Title are automatically assigned to the document class upon creation, and are stored as system properties. All properties can be inherited by subclasses.

Procedure

To create a document class:

  1. Apply the needs of your organization for content information to document class features and design. Determine which users and groups will have access and the levels of access these users and groups will have. Create these users and groups in your authentication provider (directory server) if they do not yet exist.
  2. Based on estimate of additional throughput from the new documents that will be assigned to the new document class, decide whether additional disk space is needed.
  3. Plan the security, default instance security, and reservation security of the document class. For more information, see Document access rights.
  4. Plan and create any document lifecycle policies that the class will assign to the documents based on it. For more information, see Creating document lifecycles.
  5. Plan and create any properties the class will need. For more information, see Properties.
  6. Plan and create the events and subscriptions the class will need. For more information, see Subscribing to events.
  7. If the document class is going to be automatically assigned, plan and create the automatic classification environment to perform the classification. For more information, see Automatic document classification.
  8. Create the document subclass. For more information, see Creating a subclass.
