About Activity steps

An activity step represents an activity in a workflow that will be processed by either one or more workflow participants or by a work queue.

On the workflow map, activity steps display as follows:

Button Activity
User step button An activity step assigned to one or more workflow participants, who will receive the work item in their inbox.
Work queue step button An activity step assigned to a work queue for processing by a participant who has access to the queue or by an automated process.
Unassigned step button

An activity step that is not assigned to either participants or to a work queue.

TIP You can use an unassigned step to perform calculations or other tasks.

Activity steps are the most frequently used kind of step. For an activity step, you can define instructions for the participants, specify the data fields and attachments that will be accessible at the step, specify the responses that the participants can select, and other options.
