A document can be filed in one or more folders. Unfiling a document from a folder removes the reference to the document from that folder. The document itself is not deleted.
A document that is not filed in any folder is stored in the Unfiled Documents folder. The Unfiled Documents folder is not a child folder of the root folder, and therefore is not displayed by client applications. Custom objects can also be unfiled. They are not displayed in the Unfiled Documents folder, but can be retrieved by using SQL statements. For more information, see Constructing a query with a SQL statement.
You can unfile a document from a folder only if the folder grants unfile access. Unfile from folder is an access right that is available in the security settings of each folder. The default settings for this access right are inherited from the default instance security access list of the parent folder class.
