About this task

IBM® Content Navigator is the preferred client application that you can use to manage content that is stored on IBM FileNet® Content Manager.

IBM Content Navigator is the functional replacement for Application Engine and IBM FileNet Workplace XT, which are deprecated from IBM FileNet Content Manager in this release. Deprecation does not mean that Application Engine and Workplace XT were removed from IBM FileNet Content Manager in this release, but that they might be removed in the future.

You can run IBM Content Navigator, Application Engine, and Workplace XT on the same IBM FileNet P8 system.

You can still use the deprecated versions of Application Engine and Workplace XT for document management tasks, but these applications are not longer being enhanced.

If you have features that require the Workplace client, Workplace XT, or Process Task Manager, you must install Application Engine or Workplace XT. The following features require Workplace, Workplace XT, or Process Task Manager:
  • Rendition Engine publishing: You must use Workplace only.
  • Process Simulator: You can use Workplace or Workplace XT.
  • Workflow components that use the legacy IBM FileNet Content Manager: You can implement these components to use the component manager framework that runs on Content Platform Engine. Or you can use Process Task Manager that is installed with Application Engine or Workplace XT.
  • Custom applications that were developed by using the IBM FileNet Web Application Toolkit: You must develop a custom IBM Content Navigator application to replace the Workplace applications that you were using or install Application Engine.
