Tuning Content Platform Engine storage area usage

If Content Platform Engine resources are available and you need to reduce disk consumption, you can implement content compression and content duplication suppression to optimize storage area resource utilization.

If content compression has been enabled for the storage area and if the content can be compressed below the content compression threshold, uploaded content is compressed. The suppression of duplicate content can reduce the storage space required to store content. Content Platform Engine suppresses duplicate content by checking the existing content before adding new content to the storage area.

If you enable content compression at the default setting of 80% you might obtain an average of 30% savings on disk space. In addition, if you enable content duplication suppression, you might obtain 100% savings on disk space. With both content compression and content duplication suppression enabled, you can expect less than a 10% increase in CPU utilization. If content-based indexing is enabled with content search services, a 30% drop in indexing throughput might be possible as the Content Platform Engine has to uncompress the content prior to performing the text extraction for content-based indexing. Use this information as a guideline and perform the necessary testing in order to determine the results in your environment. Your actual test results might vary according to your specific sets of data and hardware resources.
