You cannot delete a record category that contains other record categories, record folders, volumes, or records. However, you can delete a record folder or volume that contains records. Also, you cannot delete a container entity on which you placed a disposition hold. In the Base and DoD data models, a record category can be deleted both by the Records Manager and the Records Administrator. However, in the PRO data model, a record category can be deleted only by the Records Administrator.

By using either method, the entity is logically deleted. You can no longer access the entity from the IBM® Enterprise Records application. However, it remains in the object store, or it is permanently deleted from the object store. How the entity is deleted depends on whether the file plan is configured to retain metadata.
