File type categories (Workplace XT)
The File type categories site preference allows you to control the display and addition of a document based on its file type. File type categories are used by Workplace XT and Application Integration BCS.
- Workplace XT uses file type categories when determining what entry template to use when users add a document to an object store. For example, you can define a file type category for spreadsheets containing all of the spreadsheet MIME types, and associate the category with an entry template designed specifically for spreadsheets. When a user adds a spreadsheet to a folder associated with this entry template, the entry template is automatically used. See Associate entry templates with folders for more information.
- Application Integration BCS uses file type categories to filter the documents displayed when users browse or search for documents. File type categories for several common file types are pre-defined. You specify the file type categories to be used by Application Integration BCS in the Office Integration site preferences.
Managing file type categories
You associate a file type category with a type of document by assigning MIME types to a descriptive file type category name.
- You can assign any name to the file type category.
- The MIME type determines the application that displays files of that type. For more information, you can search the Internet for "MIME type" for a list of MIME types and the related applications and file extensions.
- A file type category with no defined MIME types applies to documents with no content. (A document with no content usually represents an external item that cannot be stored electronically but that can be represented and tracked by a collection of properties.)
- A MIME type of application/x-filenet-external applies to an external document such as a web address.
