About security

Publish templates and publication documents have their own security.

Publish template security

Publish template security defines who can:

The security that you specify when you add or modify a publish template is the security assigned to the publish template.

Unless your site has been set up in a special manner, checking out a publish template locks it so that only you (or an administrator) can check it back in. Someone else can check out a copy of your template and add it as a new template (probably with modifications).

If an administrator needs to check in your template or cancel the checkout, he or she will assume your checkout. See the Assume a checkout section of the Modify a publish template topic for more information. If you try to check in an assumed template or cancel its checkout, you will receive a warning message if the other person has already checked it in or canceled the checkout. The status of your copy of the template will no longer be checked out.

Workplace users can also review or update security settings. However, if you have a template checked out, a Workplace user's modifications apply to the version you checked out (the existing version). When you check in the template, your settings apply to the new version.

Publication document security

Publication document security defines who can:

The security that you specify on the Security to Apply tab is the security assigned to publication documents created using the publish template.

Publishing security

Publishing a document requires access to the following objects, each of which has its own security:

In addition, the user must have Publish rights to the source document.

Style template not specified

When the publish template does not specify a style template, the user who publishes the document becomes the owner of the publication document.

Style template specified

When the publish template specifies a style template, the user who publishes the document becomes the owner of the publication document.
