Index area properties (General tab)

The General tab permits index area properties to be viewed and modified.

Display name
The name of the index area.
Description (optional)
The description for the index area.
Object store (read-only)
The object store for the index area.
Site (read-only)
The FileNet P8 site for the index area. The site for an index area is determined by the site for the object store.
Root Directory Path
The fully qualified file name for the directory that contains the indexes for the index area. The directory must be accessible to all servers that are associated with the same FileNet P8 site as the object store. These servers include both Content Engine and IBM® Content Search Services servers. The path for the directory can be a local mount point, a local path, or a UNC path.
Area Status
The status of the index area. The following table shows the possible statuses:
Status Description
OPEN Index changes permitted:
  • Changes to existing indexes
  • Addition of new indexes

Automatic transitions to this status:
Content Engine changes the status to OPEN from STANDBY in the following circumstances:

  • No other index areas for the object store have an OPEN status.
  • An index area with a status of OPEN is needed for index information that must be added or updated.

Restraints on manual transitions to this status
You cannot change the status to OPEN when both of the following circumstances apply:

  • The number of indexes equals or exceeds the maximum specified by the Maximum number of indexes property.
  • No indexes have a status of OPEN.

FULL Index changes permitted:
  • Changes to existing indexes

Automatic transitions to this status:
Content Engine changes the status to FULL from OPEN in the following circumstances:

  • The number of indexes equals the maximum number of indexes for the index area. For information about this maximum, see Index maximums.
  • All of the indexes have a status of FULL or CLOSED.

Restraints on manual transitions to this status
Only Content Engine can set the status to FULL. You can indirectly set the status to FULL. by setting the maximum number of indexes to be equal to the current number of indexes.

You cannot directly set the status to FULL. You can indirectly set the status by setting the value of the Maximum number of indexes property as wanted.

CLOSED Index changes permitted:
  • Changes to existing indexes

Automatic transitions to this status::
None.

Restraints on manual transitions to this status:
None.

STANDBY Index changes permitted:
  • Changes to existing indexes

Automatic transitions to this status:
None.

Restraints on manual transitions to this status
You cannot change the status to STANDBY when both of the following circumstances apply:

  • The number of indexes equals or exceeds the maximum specified by the Maximum number of indexes property.
  • No indexes have a status of OPEN.

Max Indexes (optional)
The maximum number of indexes that are permitted for an index area. A value of -1 indicates that no maximum applies.
Index maximums (optional)
The following properties determine the maximum permitted size of an index. Content Engine enforces these maximums by automatically setting the index status to FULL when the current size of the index exceeds the maximum size. The status change occurs after an update to the index. Because the status change occurs after an update and because statistics are managed on a delayed basis, the maximums might be exceeded. Also, you can set a maximum to a number less than the current size of an index to force the index status to become FULL.
