This topic explains the search and bulk operations available in the Enterprise Manager Query Builder tool. See Content Engine Query Builder (Query Builder tab) for more information on Query Builder.
With Query Builder, you can:
Searches can be combined with bulk operations that include the following actions (available on the Query Builder's Actions tab):
Query Builder's View menu lets you select a "view" —either Simple View or SQL View:
Both views construct a query that can be bundled with the other Query Builder features: bulk operations, scripts, security changes. Both views support Search Mode and Template Designer Mode.
Search templates are like simple queries except, when loaded from Enterprise Manager's Saved Searches node, they prompt you for search criteria and whether you want to include any defined bulk operations.
FileNet-provided search templates are installed with every Content Engine or Enterprise Manager-only installation into a folder on the local server named SearchTemplates, located in the FileNet installation directory. Any queries placed in this folder appear in Enterprise Manager's Saved Searches node as long as they have .sch as a filename extension.
Use bulk operations when you want to update a set of objects in the same way. See the Actions tab for a list of all supported actions.
For example, assume that several documents had been checked out by someone who left your company. Using bulk operations, you could easily find all documents left checked out by that person and undo these checkouts in one operation. To do this, you would use the Query Builder to construct a search that would find all documents currently checked out under your former coworker's system login name. Before processing the search, you would select the Undo checkout option from the Query Builder's Actions tab.
Selecting multiple objects for bulk operations works much like selecting a set of files or folders displayed through Windows Explorer in which you select a group of folders or files to delete, copy, or paste. In addition, you can perform actions that are commonly performed through Enterprise Manager, such as filing documents in folders.
After the Query Builder executes a search, the Search Results details pane displays the result set. The results pane displays the columns of properties from the selected object table. You can resize or move table columns or sort the search results.
You can retrieve an object given another object that is a member of one of its object-valued properties. For example, you can find a document that has a particular security policy by using the identifying ID of the security policy in the search criteria. See Search using the value of an object-valued property for more information.
By using the object store property sheet Query tab, you can set several default values that affect searches. Setting these values should be part of your pre-search configuration.
You can perform content-based retrieval using the Query Builder SQL View, although users will need an independent software vendor's reporting tool. Note that the Query Builder Simple View cannot visually construct content-based retrieval queries. See Content-based retrieval for more information.
The following tips and guidelines can help you use the Content Engine search and bulk operations.
