Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is a tool that presents a common interface for managing different applications in a Microsoft Windows network.
MMC itself provides no management behavior, but rather acts as a host for management snap-in applications. It provides a multiple-document interface (MDI) in which each window is a console. Each console can contain one or more administrative components (snap-ins) that supply the management behavior.
Enterprise Manager is a stand-alone MMC snap-in. You can display a snap-in, such as Enterprise Manager, as an application by itself or through an MMC console. As an alternative, you can add Enterprise Manager to another MMC console, along with other administration tools.
Content Engine administrators can save customized MMC consoles with functions for different sets of operators and administrators. For example, backup operators can use a customized MMC console that includes just the backup functionality they need.
The MMC console provides two panes through which you can work with Enterprise Manager tools. The left pane provides a navigation tree that you can use to navigate through Content Engine objects. The right pane presents details related to the node selected in the navigation tree. The MMC menus and toolbar provide options that enable you to initiate actions, navigate node selections, hide or show the navigation pane, display properties, and access help text for the selected node. For step-by-step instructions on how to use the menus and toolbar, see the appropriate MMC help topic.
