Use path-based URLs

The Use path-based URLs site preference determines whether the application converts eligible ID-based document web addresses to path-based web addresses. The only ID-based web addresses eligible for conversion are those that specify the current document version, and conversion occurs only when the software can find a valid path.

When the preference is set to Yes, conversion occurs. When the preference is set to No (the default), the web address is processed as entered.

Workplace users can enter a web address directly into the address bar of their browser to retrieve a specific folder or versionable object. Versionable objects include documents, stored searches, search templates, publish templates, entry templates, and workflow definitions.

You can enter a web address in either of two formats:

For example, this ID-based web address:

http://AE-server-name/ECMF/getContent?objectStoreName=OS-name&vsId=%7Bobject-id%7D&objectType=document

would be converted to this path-based web address:

http://AE-server-name/ECMF/getContent/OS-name/folder/sub-folder/doc-containment-name

where doc-containment-name is the document's containment name as displayed in the Folders Filed in View of the information page; for example, mydocument.xls for a Microsoft Excel Worksheet.

Factors to consider

Consider the following factors when deciding how to set the preference:

Documents with internal references

How the software determines the path

When converting an ID-based web address to a path-based web address, the software selects a folder path from the list of paths accessible by the user after security checking. Conversion does not occur unless the software finds a valid path.
