Back up and restore IBM FileNet P8
A backup strategy ensuring that data and software configuration files are regularly backed up is essential to protect against the loss of that data and to facilitate a rapid recovery from an emergency that results in the destruction of the original data or an IBM FileNet P8 component. Loss of data can be catastrophic and affect the entire enterprise, or be a minor loss that affects a single component such as an object store. The backup policy you establish depends on a number of factors, such as the sensitivity of the data, the user needs, and the company organization.
Because the data processed by various P8 components are interdependent, you must back up all data within a single P8 domain at the same time, regardless of the physical location of the data. To maintain the integrity of the data within your P8 site, you must therefore restore the entire P8 domain as well, since restoring a single component of the system introduces inconsistencies and errors.
This section provides you with the information necessary to back up and restore your entire P8 system by providing you with the following information:
You can use any backup utility that preserves the security settings on the files and folders being backed up; for databases, you can use the native database backup tool provided by the RDBMS vendor or any third-party backup tool to perform database backup. This section does not provide detailed instructions for using the backup utilities.
The nature of backup and recovery assumes some data loss occurs, resulting from activity that takes place after the time of the last backup. If your site requires no data loss, consider configuring a highly available system. For information on setting up a highly available system, see the IBM FileNet P8 High Availability Technical Notice document. For additional guidelines and some case studies for deploying IBM FileNet P8 as a globally available ECM/BPM solution, see the IBM FileNet P8 Disaster Recovery Technical Notice document.
