Workplace is a collection of Web applications for general users, advanced users, administrators, and developers.
For general users, Workplace provides access to the Content Engine's object stores and the Process Engine's workflow operations. From Workplace, users can add documents, check documents in and out, publish documents, and create and set security access on documents and folders. Users can launch workflows, process workflow tasks from their inbox, and view work queues. They can search and browse object stores for documents and other content.
General users can access these Workplace features from any supported browser without downloading additional software. Some advanced and administrative applications are client-side Java applets that require a download of the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) browser plug-in, which is installed automatically the first time any of these applications are started.
General users work most often with the Workplace primary views: Tasks, Browse, Search, Search, My Workplace, Shortcuts, and Author.
For advanced users, Workplace provides Advanced Author Tools. The Advanced Authoring tools include:
For administrators, Workplace provides a means of setting and modifying site preferences, managing workflows, and configuring Process Engine structures.
Workplace Application Integration provides Administrators support for customizing the File, Insert, and Help menus of Microsoft® Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Application Integration utilizes COM Add-Ins to extend these applications by adding custom Add-In menus. See Customizing the File, Insert, and Help Add-In Menus for more information on these menus.
Administrator tools consist of the Admin Tools.
Developers can extend and customize according Workplace. The Workplace source code is available upon request.
