Terminate a work item

Use the Terminate Work dialog box to end the processing of a work item.

The Terminate Work command calls the Terminate map defined in or inherited by the workflow. The work item is then processed and ultimately terminated according to the logic of the Terminate map. If you have special processing in the Terminate map, this processing will be executed. See About system maps for additional information.

As an alternative, you can delete work using Process Administrator. Deleting work removes a work item from the system with no further processing.

To terminate a work item

  1. From the Tasks menu, select Terminate work at a step.
  2. Select a step from the Step list. Process Tracker lists only steps that have active work items. In addition, Process Tracker does not display steps associated with queues to which you are denied access.

In the Work Queue box, Process Tracker displays the name of the associated work queue, or Inbox if the work item is in a user queue.

  3. In the Participants list, select a work item to terminate.
    • If a work item is assigned to a work queue, the name of the queue displays in square brackets.
    • If a work item is assigned to a participant, the name of the user displays.
    • If a work item is locked by a user other than the one to whom it is assigned, the name of that user displays in parentheses.
  4. Click Apply to confirm termination but leave the dialog box open to choose another work item.
    or
Click OK to confirm termination and close the dialog box.

CAUTION Use extreme caution when terminating a work item. Once terminated, it cannot be recovered.

TIP You might want to terminate the work for one participant in a multi-participant step.

NOTE If there is only one active work item, terminating or deleting that work item ends the workflow. If there are multiple work items (multiple users processing work), the workflow can continue.
